I arrived in Salzburg just after midday. One of the biggest tourist things to do here is visit the ice caves. The BusAbout guide was selling tickets for a tour of the ice caves on board the bus. The price was a little steep, so I wasn't sure if I'd go. After getting talking with Sarah, who was sitting behind me on the bus, I decided to give the tour a miss and try to 'wing it' to the caves with her. She had done some research on how to get there and it worked out about 20 AUD cheaper, so [View Full Entry]

Cesky Krumlov Europe » Czech Republic » Cesky Krumlov By BradL July 5th 2007 Brad L During the 4 days I stayed in Cesky Krumlov I didn't do too much - owing to the cold and wet weather and the fact that there's not a whole lot to do there (you were right Martina!). But it is really cheap. On my 2nd day there I was lucky to find 5 [View Full Entry]

June 30 Today I headed up North to Liberec (about an hour and a half drive from Prague) to visit Martina's parents with Martina and Vlad. It was great to get out of the big cites for a few days. Martina's parents place had a real nice relaxed feel to it. And it wasn't long before I was lazing back on a sun-chair with beer in hand. Not for too long though. It was time to hit the local tennis centre. The courts had an amazing view over the countryside. Before any games were under way we had another beer. [View Full Entry]

Petrin Tower

Europe » Czech Republic » North » Prague
Rather than going up Prague Castle Tower, I decided to head up Petrin Tower (a miniature size version of the Eiffel Tower). I'd say it's the highest vantage point in Prague. And because it's built on top of a hill, apparently it's higher above sea-level than the real Eiffel Tower. The views from the top were great - especially of Charles Bridge and Prague Castle. Prague is a pretty city. There is a lot of colour in the city buildings, probably a lot different to the days of Communism here. On the way back to the hostel, who would I [View Full Entry]

French champagne, Czech rose wine, o'dourves, and a nice big slab of cheesecake. That's what I was lucky enough to be enjoying at Martina's work party tonight. I felt like an A-list celebrity! Going drink for drink with Vlad wasn't the greatest idea. He's built like a truck and...I'm not, so by the time we left for dinner (with Suzzana - one of Matina's work friends) I'd already just about reached my limit. Throw on top of that the mammoth size Mohito cocktail we shared before dinner and I barely managed to eat a thing. We'd ordered a massive mixed [View Full Entry]

I met up with some family friends, Martina and Vlad today. It just so happened that Martina's work-place was in the next street from the hostel I was staying at. So it should've been easy to find right? Almost an hour and a half later I finally found it. The sign of Martina's workplace was so small, that I'd walked past it 3 or 4 times without noticing it! It was great to see Martina and Vlad. Martina was worried something had happened to me since it took so long for me to find her! I had a few beers [View Full Entry]

With the weather turning cold, wet, and windy last night it wasn't the perfect day for a walking tour. Luckily it didn't rain too much and I had my H and M jacket (thanks Aynsley!). The tour guide was a young Czech guy and he was great. We started in the New Town, walked through the old-town (saw the famous clock), across Charles Bridge, through the Jewish Quarter (past the Old-New Synagogue), and up to the Prague Castle. The views over the city reminded me of looking over Paris from the Basilica steps. The guide also spoke about building architectural [View Full Entry]

Crossing into Czech from Germany, there was a nice change in landscape; from flat open country-side to a long meandering river with houses scattered in the adjacent valleys and hilltops. I'm not sure what the name of the town we passed through was, but it looked like a great spot for a holiday house. Arriving in Prague in the eveing, I caught up with some mates I met in Berlin. We headed to a nearby pub. It looked like what I imagined a quintessential Czech pub to look like, though with one difference. There were 4 new AMF-style bowling lanes [View Full Entry]

Rather than paying for a tour, I decided to make my own way out to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. I went with another Aussie in my room, Simon. It took just over an hour to get out there, including the trackwork delays that just happened to be taking place on the same day (I thought that was only a Sydney thing?!). I wasn't too sure how I'd react to the camp, considering the abhorrent crimes that had taken place there. It's really hard to describe how I felt walking around the grounds. There are still some of the original buildings left [View Full Entry]

I went on a bike tour in the arvo today. It was a free tour which I'd heard about from an Aussie couple at one of the coffee shops in Amsterdam. In fact, I found out that there are free walking and bike tours in London, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, and Munich - definitely worth knowing about! It was a 4-hour tour jam-packed with Berlin history. I saw left-over WWII bullet scars on some of the buildings, museuminsel (museum island), Berliner Dom (old church), Bradenburger Tor (gate), Reichstag (again), and Bebelplatz. Bebelplatz was where some pro Nazi students and university staff [View Full Entry]
