we took the subway to shinjuku first to wander around the city. it was a pretty short ride. we got there and found some large brick monuments covered in ivy - no idea what they are. it was pretty crowded. lots of shops. there were no elephants allowed in shinjuku. we ducked down an shady cyberpunk-looking alley and thought we found a japanese video game / video shop. The had clothes stuffed and holding signs with halloween masks. it was pretty creepy. even creepier since it turned out to be a porn shop about 5 stories high. we got a few stares when we came out. i guess it was pretty clear to everyone else on the street. we found club sega - a 4 story arcade with all sega games. we played time crisis 3 ... read more

we came back to the hotel to get cleaned up and empty out pictures. we stopped in b's room for a while and watched the city. the red lights fading on and off. tokyo is dense. the elevator to the lobby has an lcd screen which shows soothing images. all buttons are capacitive sensors. we went back out to ropangiii- to gaspanic first. a man stopped us in the street and tried to get us to go to his club. we tried to tell him no, but he kept insisting. we got past him and into gaspanic. it was cool. they have a rule that you have to be drinking to stay inside. there was a dj and a few people working there and us. i guess not too many people go out on sunday. we ... read more

up. feeling a lot better than i was last night. maybe that was jet lag. I guess i was just up for a long time too. we went out to the streets and looked around for something to eat. an old woman was getting into a row boat and was being pushed out into the water near our hotel. it seemed like the denny's from last night might have an interestingly japanized version of the american restaurant, so we decided to try it. at least it would be cheap. after posing with tommy lee jones on a vending machine coffee ad we got to the restaurant. it was a lot nicer than any denny's i've ever been in. the menu was completely different. not really what we expected at all. i wanted to get a japanese ... read more

Our plane boarded a little late, but the still said we would be there around 17 Tokyo time. All of us had middle seats in coach, which didn't seem so bad until we discovered that the plane had no power outlets (neither normal nor travel) in coach. In flight entertainment was sparse and we were about as far from the screen as possible. Good thing D had given us a couple Airborne to take we had to sit next some sick people. I wish the Americans on the plane had the same courtesy as the Japanese. Both here and on the plane, anyone who feels sick has the good sense to wear a mask over their mouth. We tried to catch a little sleep on the plane and ration what battery life we did have on ... read more

We decided to explore the area around the hotel tonight. The area probably wasn'tas english-friendly as other destinations, but we were able to get buy with a little broken Japanese. Due to the high cost of internet in the hotel rooms, we went in search of a cyber cafe which is a daunting task when each building on the densely packed streets has several floors, and we were unable to find anything near the ground that resembled one. A little good luck found us a cyber caf?on the second floor of a building. The man told us, in Japanese, 200 Yen for ten minutes. We fired off some emails to let our families know we arrived safely, paid and left (he only charged us 100 since we were in there for about 5 minutes). We then ... read more

A quick walk around the block revealed our hotel, a massive two building complex overlooking Akasaka. Some stares while crossing the street informed us that the Japanese do not J-Walk, even when there is no traffic. We checked in and went to our rooms to freshen up before heading out. The rooms are absolutely beautiful, probably the fanciest hotel I have ever stayed in. The view from my room was breathtaking - a panoramic look at the Akasaka district. Our rooms seem about as large as a typical American Hotel, except more technical. Bathrooms are marble, with a tile painting in the shower and the ever popular computerized toilet. You can control all the rooms lighting from the nightstand, as well as the room's sound system, which ever pipes the radio into the bathroom. After we ... read more

After they checked our passports and glanced at our baggage (quickest customs ever), we hit the subway to get to our hotel. The Japanese subway looks a lot like the El in Chicago, except it was ridiculously clean. We paid a little extra and took the Express Train to Ueno, then hopped on the Ginza line to our hotel. The subway station is literally about a 100 meters from the hotel, very convenient. The Subway was extremely easy to navigate, all instructions are given in both Japanese and English, the only tricky part is figuring out how much fare you need before you get on. Got to the hotel around 19. ... read more

Hi everyone! I am sorry I haven’t posted a blog entry in so long. (I seem to start every blog entry that way, don’t I?) A few weeks ago the blog host site lost its email service so it could not send email notifications to our subscribers. Thus, I thought I would wait to post an entry until the email service was back up, but that STLL hasn’t happened, so I am going to post this entry and then send an email to everyone from my regular email and hope that (1) I can do it and (2) I don’t miss anyone. If I miss someone, I apologize in advance. We have really begun to feel settled here in Tokyo and are enjoying it immensely. I would go so far as to say we are loving ... read more

When I first arrived in Japan I taught lessons about traveling since it is my passion in life. I told my students about all the incredible places I had been and intended to go, including places like living on a boat for a week in the countryside of England, eating the best baguettes in the world in the south of France, hiking the Swiss Alps, scuba diving in Mexico, drinking Czech beer in Prague, riding a camel in Tunisia, and wandering the canals and red light district of Amsterdam. As the year went on I boasted about hiking Fuji-san, riding a bicycle to Shikoku, and my desire to harvest rice. All these amazing things did nothing for my students. I soon realized that a) leaving Japan was not high on their priority lists and b) the ... read more
