Once upon a time, right in the middle of an Aussie Summer, Linda (aka Helen) and Jodes (aka Monika) decided to pursue a professional snowboarding career in Japan. As you do when you've only had 6 hours of experience on a snowboard. (We didn't say it was a GOOD decision!) Here is the story of our journey... Our two week grand tour of Japan started off relatively smoothly - perhaps a little unusual for Linda and I! Despite the lady at check-in getting extremely agitated about us having only an E-ticket and no physical ticket with a particularly crucial number on it that she just had to have to make it through her day, we made it onto the flight. We were somewhat amused that noone else at any other airport throughout our trip seemed to ... read more

Hi everyone, We arrived back home on Friday. I just thought that I'd update you on our adventures in Tokyo. We had a really good flight from Sydney to Tokyo, we both managed to get some kip and it did us so much good. When we got into Tokyo it didn't really take much effort to get on the train and get to Ikebukuro where we were staying, we were really suprised at how easy it was. We got to our hotel at about 9ish so we had to go back out and explore for a bit while they were sorting out our room. We tried to find the tourist information, but ended up wandering endlessly and getting lost in the underground exits! We managed to find 2 really nice bakeries and see lots of plastic ... read more

In an earlier blog I described Tokyo as being overwhelming. You might even say I described the city with mild disdain. Well, in my second visit to the city I was won over! Tokyo was a breath of fresh air compared to my current digs… international, entertaining, creative. My preconceived notions pegged Tokyo as a typical metropolis - huge, cold, and distant. Over the four days I spent there, I found it to be quite the opposite. The people were friendly and helpful, even going out of their way to help a lost looking foreigner. Many Japanese say that Tokyo is a great place to visit, but not a great place to live. I can understand where they are coming from, but for a 26 year-old foreigner, Tokyo is just what I needed after spending four ... read more

Hiya! The last of our entries on our blog - our journey finally ends in Tokyo. A tiring few days we must say, I dont think anyone could keep up with the pace here. We arrived at Narita airport in the morning and instead of the usual heat to greet us, we were welcomed with 10 degrees - it was freezing - to us of course - still, tired and cold we headed off to the city on a 2 hour trek...had a nice sleep on the coach though... Our hotel was like a maze - the entrance was on the 1st floor with reception on the 3rd - very strange and on entry to our hotel suite we were shocked - it was so diddy - but comfortable. We dumped our suitcases and headed off ... read more

Ⅰ arrived in Tokyo intact and still recognisably human after the long flight from London. Im really enjoying my traditional, "Edo" style, accomodation and the City as a whole. I'm eating, sleeping, bathing and even dressing Japanese,at least within the confines of the Ryokan and I'm making maximum use of the four words of Japanese I know. I've travelled all over the City in the last couple of days and have found the people to be extremely helpful and civilised, apparently without exception. The City itself is a place of obvious and very great contrasts. Towering modern temples are everwhere dedicated to the generation of wealth but there are very many other places where traditional Gods are worshipped as they have been for centuries. Such tradition prevails in the narrow streets which, everywhere, crowd the feet of ... read more

I am sorry I have not written a blog entry in so long, it is just that we’ve been busy with the holidays and all that. I have to thank all of you (again) for the wonderful comments and messages Marc and I have gotten on our blog. The comments and messages make us feel so connected to all of you “back home” and all of our friends all over the world (Mac & Mary in Isle of Man for instance!!) This blog has become very important to us….you can’t imagine what it means to us to know you are interested in our lives here in Japan! Robert, thank you for encouraging us to do this. It is such a wonderful way to stay connected to everyone and to keep everyone up to date on our ... read more

Diassapointment. Blessing. There are those of you that will be massively dissapointed with me. I did not get to a Japanese new years religious ceremony. I did not experience the deep religious feeling I was led to believe I would. I was blessed just the same. I believe that I am an extremely lucky traveller, having been invited to Buddhist blessing ceremony in Thailand, given discounts to capsule hotels, invited into peoples homes in Ecuador, Canada and the United States and shown around those places at the expense of my host and new friend. It is wonderful to meet people that are proud of their country and want to share it with others - I am amazed at the kindness of complete strangers, I can only dream of being able to return the favour some day. ... read more

Happy New Year or should I say "Akemashite Omedetô". Tokyo for New Year has proved to be an inspired choice of time/destination, though inspiration had little to do with it. The two main areas for this trip were to be Mexico before Xmas and South East Asia early New Year. The remaining planning came in stringing these two areas together over the holiday season. Hawaii is an obvious stopover mid Pacific, but what about between Hawaii and South East Asia? My first choice had been Hong Kong, but at time of booking there was no availability to get me in and out of Hong Kong over the New Year? Looking at the map, Japan was the next most obvious choice. I had some vague notion that New Year was quite a big deal for the Japanese, ... read more

I was always under what was probably a poorly uninformed impression that Japan was a quiet, understated country. In my few (wasted) years in high school Japanese class I learnt about the culture of a quiet people, who respected tradition and weren’t amenable to the loud, disrespectful ways of us Westerners (hence the trainee Japanese teacher who came on exchange to Maclean High School for a few months and after one period of our Year Nine elective Japanese class she was so shaken by our loud and outrageous behaviour she took off the remainder of the week and steeled herself against any further aural assaults by refusing to come to any more of our classes). Touching down in Tokyo I had prepared to present my quiet, humble self and was certain that I would be unable ... read more

Today I visited the Imperial Palace east gardens, it was raining but only lightly and still the place seemed very beautiful. Possibly having the rain was a blessing as far less people were around and it gave a really peaceful feel to the place. After walking the gardens I headed back into town for a meal then went back to the hostel to get my things as I had a plan, I wanted to spend the night in one of those capsule hotels! The hotel was fairly quiet and quite an experience I would not have missed out on. The capsules are plenty big enough for me, include a TV and radio (not that it had any stations that interested me) And an alarm clock mirror stand for placing items and dimmer on the light - ... read more
