We had two days left in Tokyo and to be honest we were getting pretty lazy so we had booked ourselves on a full day and night tour of the city for today. We figured we'd get to see the main sights without too much bother and still have a day free to see anything else we'd missed out on. The tour company we'd booked with didn't pick up from any hotels in east Shinjuku so we had to get up early and trek over to one of the hotels in the west. Over near the Tokyo Park Hyatt - kinda nice to see how the other half lives. In the end we had a pretty full bus for the day. Sadly we had few annoying americans to provide amusement and to my great dismay our ... read more

Our last day in Tokyo... Early morning. We were up at 6 to head out to the Fish markets in Tsukiji. Despite 2 weeks in Japan our JR pass had expired so this was the first day we had to deal with buying a normal ticket for the train. Only that only took us FOREVER. It was about halfway through the whole process that we realised that the ticket machines had an 'english' option. Surprisingly this made the procedure a whole lot easier! But we got there in the end and spent a few hours walking around the fish markets which was pretty interesting. There were little carts going everywhere picking up crates and rows and rows of fish and crabs and octopus... We spent quite a while wandering around cehcking it all out. Most of ... read more

Let me explain. There's a few reasons for our title, none of which mean we didn't enjoy our time in Japan. We enjoyed it immensely. We did find, however, that we had a bit more trouble communicating while we were in this country than we have had in other countries on our trip. First of all, on a purely logistic basis -- our mobiles and Blackberrys didn't work in Japan! Plus, Ted's laptop died and he had to have it sent back to the Sony factory to be fixed, so we didn't have his laptop for our time in Japan. So, communication with our life back in the US was limited to the time we could get on our sons' laptops -- Tyler was very generous with his, I should add. Secondly, we had a number ... read more

... read more

When we first rented our apartment, the realtor arranged to have a "technology" company called Asist Solutions which does a lot of work for them and the expat community to provide an estimate on phone, internet, and satellite television connectivity. They came out the day of our walk through to provide the estimate for: Internet set up Wireless router set up Two skyperfect tv (for Japanese tv) antenna purchase, installation, and connection Armed Forces Network (AFN) TV (10 channels of US tv) satelitte antenna installation and connection All together, the estimate was for 128,000 Yen or a little over $1100. There was just one hitch; we had not been able to locate an AFN antenna; they were on back order at the Base Exchange. We had the two decoders but still no antenna when it came ... read more
