We spent about a week in Peru and fell in love with this beautiful country of contrasts -- from the desertic coastal city of Lima to the highlands of Cusco to the lush greenery and mountains of Machu Picchu. Of course, there is much more to see of Peru, and we hope to discover it someday. We started and ended our tour of Peru in Lima, known as the City of Kings, and the capital of Spanish-ruled South America from the mid 1500's to the early 1800's. While we were there, we had a walking tour of downtown and also toured some pre-Incan ruins, like Pachacamac. We next flew to Cusco, a city of about 300,000 in southeastern Peru near the Urubamba Valley (Sacred Valley) of the Andes mountains. Cusco is at around 11,500 feet in ... read more

Our long anticipated 11 hour flight to Rio de Janeiro was uneventful but we landed at night so we had to wait a little longer before experiencing the sights of this pulsating “sun and fun” capital of South America. Rio was one of Tyler’s "Top 5 Destinations," so he was particularly anxious. And none of us were disappointed when we woke up the next morning to a beautiful blue Brazilian sky. We set off on our tour of Rio and the Rio Harbor by first visiting the magnificent “Cristo Redentor” or Christ the Redeemer statue on the top of Corcovado Mountain, 2,400 feet above the city. To take advantage of the clear day, we next took the cable car up to Sugarloaf Mountain. From both locations, we had panoramic views of the famous beaches of Copacabana ... read more

Farewell to Europe!

A few days in Amsterdam and a few days in Barcelona and our time in Europe is up! We arrived in Europe on March 5 and are leaving it nearly 3 months later -- we almost feel like natives! We will miss it, but not the prices, that's for sure. Amsterdam was quite the experience. Our hotel was about one block from the Red Light District and walking the streets are many colorful characters. We didn't do much walking around in the evenings, although Ted and Ty did venture into a "coffeeshop" to see what all the fuss was about. One visit was enough! We did a half day trip out to the Dutch countryside to a town called Zaanse Schans where there used to be 1,000 working windmills that took care of all the area's ... read more

Well, as far as Tyler is concerned, we have reached the "motherland." It's not that he has Scandinavian blood in him -- at least not as far as we know -- but Tyler just seems to connect with this beautiful, rugged, COLD, ice-hockey lovin' part of the world! While Griffin's and my teeth were chattering, Ted and Ty were out carousing the streets in search of the latest NHL playoff game. They even managed to see a few. We had considered shortening our trip a bit and Scandinavia is the area we would probably have left out, but we're very glad we decided against that! It is stunningly beautiful here and all the water!!! Living in Colorado, we miss being around water and we got our fill of it in this part of the world. Finland ... read more

After we left Italy, we did a self-drive tour for 6 days that took us through Weggis, Switzerland; Beaune, France; and both Baden, Baden and Frankfurt, Germany. Unfortunately, we have very few pictures from those days because our luck finally ran out and we encountered a LOT of rain that week. The scenery through the Alps in Switzerland was magnificent, even if the clouds were swirling all around us - it reminded us of Colorado, of course! We had one sunny day in Beaune which fortunately for us was a day we were scheduled for a 4 ½ mile hike with our guide, Geoff, through the countryside at the end of which we had a wonderful lunch in a small village restaurant. We walked past dozens of vineyards and Geoff gave us a remedial lesson on ... read more

We’ve been in Greece and Italy since we posted our last entry. We started this leg of our journey with a visit to our friends, the Heards, in Athens. Lana took us to the Acropolis and we saw the Parthenon in all its glory. After spending a couple of very relaxing days with the Heards, we boarded our cruise ship, the Oceania Insignia, for an 11 day cruise of the Mediterranean. On the cruise we stopped at the Greek islands of Delos, Mykonos, Rhodes and Santorini and then moved on to Malta. Next came Italy and stops in Sicily, Sorrento, Amalfi, Livorno and Civitavecchia (Rome). After our cruise was over, we ended our stay in Italy with stops in Venice, Verona and Lake Como. Some of the places/sites we visited besides the ancient Athenian Acropolis were ... read more

I am struggling with how to describe the last 11 days. It’s not that long a time period, but we have seen and done so much. The eastern Euopean cities we have visited have been beautiful and so historic and our heads are truly swimming with information from the monarchies of the Austro-Hungarian Empire to the atrocities of the Nazis in WWI to the years of the Iron Curtain and Soviet bloc to the economies and cultures of these countries following the political changes in 1989. We started in Prague, the “City of One Hundred Spires,” where our education on eastern European history began with our guide, Yiri. We toured Old Town, the Municipal House and the Jewish Quarter before crossing the Charles Bridge to visit the Castle District, the seat of Bohemian kings and Holy ... read more

We have just spent a wonderful, relaxing 9 days in Portugal. We started and ended in Lisbon, and in the middle, we took a tour around central and southern Portugal, staying in different pousadas every night. The pousadas we stayed in are historical hotels - either built in, near or as part of castles, monasteries, convents or palaces. For those of you who have spent some time here, you know that Portugal is not a very big country - about the size of Indiana. But it has all sorts of terrain and climates packed into its small borders. We drove by beautiful beaches and fields of cork and olive trees and we also wound our way up into the hills upon which castle after castle was built to protect the country from invaders, mainly from Spain. ... read more

Our tour of Normandy took us on a journey through history from the cathedrals of medieval times to the Battle of Hastings with William the Conqueror to the Hundred Years War between France and England to the Battle of Normandy in WWII. We had requested a tour of the beaches of Normandy, but we got so much more, due in most part to the patient explanations of our tour guide, David, who is from the city of Bayeux,in Normandy. We began our tour at the Cathedral of Chartres, widely considered to be the finest gothic cathedral in France. Even though the weather was cold and drizzly, as it was throughout all of our tour of Normandy, we were still able to appreciate the 152 beautiful stained glass windows of the cathedral. Next we drove to the ... read more

The four of us flew from Cairo to London but at Heathrow, Ted, Griff and I had to say goodbye to Tyler who was travelling on to Denver. He needed to take an entrance exam into his degree program at UCD and they would not accept anything other than him taking the test in person on the date it was offered. So off he went and the three of us sadly went on to Scotland without him. But we weren't sad to be going to Scotland, of course. Home of golf for Ted and Mary Queen of Scots for Jill -- we were looking forward to this visit. As most of you know, Ted has been to Scotland a number of times on golfing trips, but he was very excited to be able to show off ... read more
