We arrived yesterday at two in the afternoon. The plane flight was not bad at all. We both took or sleeping drugs and knocked ourselves out for at least seven of the 11 total hours. After we arrived we took a 80 min. train ride to Tokyo city, and from there we walked to our hostel. It was a very clean, contemporary hostel. All concrete and glass. We decided to take a little nap, but it turned into a full on sleep cycle. We finally got up at four in the morning to go see the fish market, but we took too long and missed it. After we checked in our bags into a locker at the main Tokyo Station, we went on to explore the city. I really like it, it reminds me a ... read more

Monday was a relaxing, yet full day. We both slept in a bit, and headed out of the house by lunch time. After taking the train to the business area where Michi used to work, we stopped for lunch at this tastey pork and veggie place where Michi frequented while working in the area. The pork was light and fresh, and the veggies a good compliment. There was lychee for dessert, but not having seen it whole, I attempted to take a big bite skin and all. Apparently you're suppossed to peel the skin off, and eat the sweet, juicy inside. I figured it out eventually. It was gorgeous day, so after lunch we took the elevator up to the 30th floor of the Densu building, the adverstising agency where Michi used to work. What ... read more

Tokyo Disneyland ~ Leave your dreams at home A, J, S and me reached Tokyo Disneyland on the afternoon of 13 April 2007. Located on the eastern seaboard of Tokyo, the 5 year old Theme Park would be a delight to visit if ONLY :- 1) I did not have to suffer a terrible headache in the afternoon. Coming to Day 8 of our Central Japan trip. I could feel my body slowly draining away. Anyway, luckily that A had some panadols around. If not, it would be a really terrible day for me. 2) The 3.30pm traditional Afternoon Parade showcasing the best of Disney was on. 3) The nightly fireworks was on. Both events were cancelled due to “inclement wind conditions”. I was lamenting that since the resort was located next to Tokyo Bay, it ... read more

Ah, Sunday, the day of rest. I suppose I should be praying for my Saturday night transgressions. I'll start by putting a disclaimer out there to any family members that may still have some sweet, innocent image of me they are harboring. The blog you are about to read, and the posted pics show me at my drunken best here in Tokyo. Actually, I've done a lot of editing, so you all get the (mostly) G-rated shots. Michi wouldn't let me delete any from her camera, and I said I was alright with that as long as she didn't publish them. ;-) Wondering what exactly they contain??? Hehehehe... Nothing too scandelous, but embarrassing enough. Anyway. Our Saturday had a late start. I was up by 8am, as I was in bed soon after midnight, but ... read more

A quick stop in this frenetic city... So different, so caothic yet so organized. We had few embarrasing moments today ... but people are incredibly polite and helpful! We started the day at the fish market... had a good sushi breakfast... The frenzy here is something that cannot be taken on picture! We cruised the city for the rest of the day: old town Asakusa where our hotel was, Shinjuku with its shops, Akhibara 'electic city', Ginza is 'the' fashion place, Rippongi is the expression of the modern Japaneese architecture, and metro is definitevely a place of its own... to be lived as any other part of the city! Wow - what a closure to our adventure! Thanks for following us! And upon return - we will add more pictures to our previous blogs - if you're ... read more

In Tokyo Asia » Japan » Tokyo » Shinjuku By Steve SarahMay 18th 2007S&S We arrived yesterday in Tokyo after a pretty normal flight from Seattle. We are super surprised on how clean and orderly everything is...from a pit crew of people loading your luggage onto the bus to English signs on everything. We just keep stumbling around and magically appear where we want to go. Last night was a bit of sightseeing around our hotel in Shinjuku and today we ventured onto the subway to see the largest fish market in the world ($15m worth of fish every day) this morning and eat sushi breakfast (actually not as good as Seattle and... read more

Well this is my last blog from Japan. At 9:30ish this evening I'll be on a plane jet set for Australia. Hope you are all happy that there are more pictures up. I'll keep gradually adding as i go along. Got back to Tokyo on Sunday afternoon. On the train journey I saw mount Fuji out the window, I've seen it in pictures but it look amazing in real life. Only wish i could have got a decent picture, but a mental image will have to do. Had a lazy day round Tokyo on Monday. It seems less crazier now but last time i was here it was Golden week which is basically loads of bank holidays. That evening i found the craziness again. I met up with Liz and Marie from the Kyoto hostel. ... read more

Konichiwa! It is Tuesday evening, around 1830 hours, second day into the trip. Michi's was having some issues with the net, but lucky me it's up and running again. The flight over was uneventful. First time on a 777 - pretty large plane. I paid a little extra at the gate for "economy plus" seating, which basically means the first section of econmy seats have a little extra leg room and they can charge more. A 10 hour flight was worth it. I arrived Monday afternoon local time, and was surprsingly not too jet lagged. Customs was a breeze, and the first thing I noticed was how imaculate the airport was. Of course, absolutely wonderful to walk out to the arrivals area and be greeted by Michi. Considering the train to Tokyo was another hour ride, ... read more

"Ohayo Gozaimasu" (Good Morning). It started getting light about 4am. They don't have "daylight savings time" in Japan, and they must be just west of a time zone line, so it gets light early and dark early. We had a great breakfast at the hotel, a buffet with American and Japanese style dishes. Meiji Shrine, Imperial Palace, and Asakusa Kannon Temple Then, we headed out to Yoyogi Park/Meiji Shrine. The tour guide briefed us on the Shrine. This isn't just a historical exhibit, this is still a functioning house of worship. People work there, and go there and pray. We also checked out the Imperial Palace Park, the official residence of the Emperor. Then, we went to Asakusa Kannon Temple. On the grounds just outside of the temples and shrines, there is usually flowing water available ... read more
