Next up cam the Spirit of America. That is what is written on the Car licence plates. (Every state has a motto) Staying just north of down town I took a ride in a taxi whose driver had apparently carried Prince Harry a few days ago. His friends said it was him and he was British and he was ginger!!!! Anyway looking round downtown Boston I started walking around the freedom trail. Boston is home to the start of the constitution, American independence, a massacre and a tea party. My personal favourite was the Cheers bar! - Where everybody knows your name! The Hollywood cheers bar is located in Quincy Market. Which is a nice area with food courts, market stalls and shops. In the evening I met with a friend from Australia who lives there. ... read more
So from Washington it is off to New York state and a little town called Buffalo. Buffalo is a popular uni town and a good base if you want to go to the Falls. Also home of Buffalo wings. I got off the train at 7 and the place was a ghost town. Now my lonely planet could be lying or when schools out there is no one here. Arriving at my hostel which is quite busy i relaxed and chatted to other travellers. A lot of the people i'm meeting now are those who did camp america and are now seeing the sights in the few weeks left they have. I was up early the next day and hopped on a bus to Niagra Falls. The American side. Walking to goat island which separates the ... read more
Now i was realy excited about going to Washington. Not because of real life politics but instead the fictional world of 'The West Wing' Anyway after feeling what feels like a lifetime travelling on buses i took the train instead. This means i arrive at Union Station. This place is a wow place. It's a beautiful station. Anyway locating my hostel i then located the pharmacy as i have picked up yet another killer cold. I had one day to explore Washington. Now arriving to beautiful sunshine i woke up to Grey miserable weather. (Still hot though!!!) My first stop was 1600 Pensylvannian avenue. Home of PoTUS (only 1 year to go for this guy!!) I must say i expected it to be bigger. There are buildings and wings off to the side which you don't ... read more
Now being in San Francisco and flying out of New York I encountered a problem. I'm on the wrong side of the country. Realising i need to get to the east side i looked at my options. Then ignoring the logically part of my brain i got the bus to Chicago! On the 14th I started my journey. Now travelling by bus across the country ain't as simple as it sounds. I had 2 transfers. Starting in San Francisco it was across to Salt Lake City with a pause in Reno. Now even though i was going to live on a bus for a few days the views along the way were cool. For such a big country with big over populated cities there is still so much open space. Leaving San Fran there was a ... read more
...also my jeans, hat, towel, etc, etc. So back on the Greyhound 'fun' bus and it is off to San Francisco. The city built on the steepest hill ever!!!!! The place is also so cool it has it's own unique weather system. Luckily for me it was sunny for my stay. Arriving late in the evening i woke to find us going across a bridge. Is it the golden gate i wondered. Turns out it was bay bridge. The other lesser known bridge. After much need sleep, i strolled down, then up, then down again to Fisherman's Wharf. Along the way i saw the cable cars, walked through china town (home of the fortune cookie) and also San Fran's own version of little Italy. Down at the docks. I saw some good views of Alcatraz and The ... read more
...but what if it don't!! So i jumped on my bus and I went to Vegas. The lady sitting next to me was lovely and gave me a where's hot and where's not of Vegas. This came in useful. Arrving early evening i was like a kid at Disney Land except a grown up Disney land. I met a fellow Brit on the bus who was staying at the same hotel as me. So after checking in and enjoying the fact i have a king size bed, tv, couch and bath we hit the strip. The strip is like 5 miles long and even at night it is baking. Well it is a desert. Anyway by the time we got out the lights were coming on. It was magical... or as some people say tacky!! The ... read more
Right so travel blogs been down for a while and all my stuff I've saved in drafts of e-mails to copy and paste. (As it will save me time in the future) From LA i went to San Diego. Now everyone i spoke to knew i was always planning on doing San Fran after LA but looking at accommodation and travel i decided to change it round a bit. Therefore on Wednesday 1st August I hopped on the bus to San Diego. Arriving there i found what i believe LA is missing...character. Don't get me wrong LA is cool but you don't need to spend too long there before it gets old and dull. Arriving at my hostels i got my priorities straight and did my washing. (I hadn't done it since leaving Auckland and frankly ... read more
Having left Fiji at 10 in the evening on the 28th, I found it amusing that i arrived in LA at 13.30 on the 28th. International Date Line we love ya! Anyway LAX is a massive airport. Huge!! After getting through security without any major problem i hopped into a "share van" or shuttle bus as i've been calling them down to Hollywood! It was like one of those TV shows where they drive along with faces pressed aginst the window in awe at the sights. Well it would have been except i was talking about 'Harry Potter' to some of the other travellers. Arriving and realising I'm actually staying on Hollywood BV was cool as looking out i could see Mann's Chinese theatre (were they hold premiers), the Kodak theatre (oscars) and the stars names ... read more
For those of you paying attention I left you on Sanawai. Next up came the Sunrise resort on an island I'll fill in when i get my notes. There are a few things I should point out about here.... 1. We were told the food wasn't great. 2. We were told the P.R guy (that's what the hosts call themselves) is entertaining. 3. On the other side of the island the film 'Blue Lagoon' with Brooke Shields was filmed. 4. Britney Spears and Operah Winfrey stayed up the road. To clarify. The food wasn't any different to what we were already having. The P.R guy or 'Queen' as he was called reminded us of Bubbles from 'Little Britain' when he spoke. "Hello Darling" Oh and points 3 and 4 are true. Constantly a day ahead of ... read more
So after leaving New Zealand... in a foul mood as i had to pay air port tax!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's off to Fiji. BULA!!! Arrived early evening and was met by my mini tour organisers (i.e i went to their office). Here I got my vouchers for all transport and meals and accommodation. The first evening I stayed at the Aquarius Pacific Hotel where they put on a fire dance and we saw some traditional Fijian dancing and some crazy dancing with FIRE!!!! It was up early on the 15th to get the big yellow boat to my first port of call... South Sea island. Now for some reason i thought all islands will have ports. I was wrong. Transport from the big yellow boat to the islands were done by smaller boats. Thankfully though my first ... read more
