Background: The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; the islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared its independence after Japan's surrender, but it required four years of intermittent negotiations, recurring hostilities, and UN mediation before the Netherlands agreed to relinquish its colony. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic state. Current issues include: alleviating widespread poverty, preventing terrorism, continuing the transition to popularly-elected governments after four decades of authoritarianism, implementing reforms of the banking sector, addressing charges of cronyism and corruption, and holding the military and police accountable for human rights violations. Indonesia has been dealing with armed separatist movements in Aceh and in Papua.

Saturday, July 18th We left Sanur early and headed for Kuta, Bali's party town, located to the west of Denpasar. If you're looking for a party scene with drunken college kids and surfers, this is the place for you. We, however, only came to drop off the Jimny and see what it's like before leaving Bali. Most importantly, it's conveniently close to the airport. On the way we took a wrong turn and ended up at a big surf shop. We both needed a pair of long trousers for NZ so we checked it out. Talita got very cheap jeans and [View Full Entry]

Tuesday, July 14th Today we had to say goodbye to Ric and the nice people at Ocean-Sun because we were off to climb the volcano, Gunung Agung. When we tried to pay, their credit card machine didn't work and we didn't have enough cash, and since this part of Bali has very few internet providers and no ATMs at all, we had to take their banking details and promise to pay the balance into their account when we arrive back in Denpasar. Pain in the butt, but what can you do? We were told that the nearest ATM was in Amlapura, [View Full Entry]

One of the rooms we stayed in at Teba House
We stayed in 4 in total while there!
We woke up on our first morning in Ubud to the cockrels and the ducks and a whole world of animal noises but we were very glad to be there. We found ourselves a gorgeous organic cafe called (wait for it!) Kafe which served amazing food which agreed with my tablets, brown rice, porridge etc. thank goodness. It's been an absolute pain being in asia and not being able to eat white rice, I used to love chow mein but i think my love affair with noodles is well and truly over!!! So we spent a few days wandering around the [View Full Entry]

So we are finally settling in Bali, our initial impression of it was not good but we are now loving it. After my last blog, we found the train/bus station in Jakarta, without getting run over or lost. It was an experience, we are noticing that everywhere we go people stare. We dont know if we have something on us or i dont know. They also seem to think that we look really funny. It is odd. On the way back from the station we went through the freedom square where there is a huge gold statue in the middle. It [View Full Entry]

Total relaxation Asia » Indonesia » Bali

July 11th We had a lazy day reading, washing clothes, snoozing and snacking on delicious pineapple pancakes covered with honey and ice-cream. After a nap we found a resort that sold the wi-fi credits we were looking for (it cost three times as much as the same credits in Lovina! Ouch!). What’s weird is the lack of wi-fi in Bali. This is such a huge tourist hotspot and yet there are almost no wi-fi service providers. Even in Vietnam, which the rest of Asia considers to be a little backward, you can't turn around without running into a free wi-fi hotspot. [View Full Entry]

Inside every thimble looking structure stood a statue of Buddha. This one had broken in half so we were able to get a real good look at his Holiness.
Howdy everyone! I must say that I have fallen in love with Indonesia even though I have only been here for under 2 weeks. Everyone is super friendly, food and drinks are cheap, and the scenery is absolutely beautiful. Especially after hanging out on the beach for a few days now its definitely going to be hard to leave. But until August 4th comes around, I'm trying to keep the thoughts of not being here out of my head. Our Indonesian adventure began when we flew into Bandung which is located in western Java. We were planning on staying there just [View Full Entry]

I know it has been a while since our last blog. We have been so busy doing so many things and as well Niki has been a little sick. She is on antibiotics now so all is good. Where to start... Well our first day in Indonesia we flew into Bundung. It was a crazy city. Our taxi could barley drive through the streets. After we got our hostel figured out we thought that we should go to the train station to buy some tickets for the next day to go to Yogyakarta. When we arrived at the train station we [View Full Entry]

July 8th This morning we snorkeled the Drop-Off. It was an interesting spot with little shallow coral and plenty of fish. Highlights were one Nudibranch, three small Black-Spotted Toadfish and one big Barracuda. Back at home we napped and read most of the afternoon, then went hunting for wi-fi airtime. We were unable to locate a place where we could buy some credits but ran into a South African guy. We started chatting and soon his girlfriend joined us. Sean and Wendy live in the UK and they're also traveling for an extended time. After a brief chat we said goodbye [View Full Entry]

Six Days in Bali Asia » Indonesia » Bali
Bali is a place I'd always wanted to "experience", and I was lucky enough to get down there for a short week before leaving Asia. Flying on a night flight to Denpasar from Shanghai via Singapore, I arrived on this lovely island at noon on Friday, July 3. A taxi took me up into the mountains to the town of Ubud, where I spent three nights. I then had "Agung" drive me to Amed on the east coast of the island and spent another three nights there. Yesterday morning, another driver and I did the 3-hour trip down south to the [View Full Entry]
