Background: The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; the islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared its independence after Japan's surrender, but it required four years of intermittent negotiations, recurring hostilities, and UN mediation before the Netherlands agreed to relinquish its colony. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic state. Current issues include: alleviating widespread poverty, preventing terrorism, continuing the transition to popularly-elected governments after four decades of authoritarianism, implementing reforms of the banking sector, addressing charges of cronyism and corruption, and holding the military and police accountable for human rights violations. Indonesia has been dealing with armed separatist movements in Aceh and in Papua.

Relaxing day in Ubud Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud
Today we wanted to take it easy. We left the hotel this morning and headed for some of the small shops here in Ubud. It was a beautiful day outside and great for walking the streets. We made our way in and out of some of the shops mingling and conversing with some of the local vendors. It was fun. Next Dewa told us he wanted to take us to a famous rice terrace. On the way, we stopped and had a nice lunch with ANOTHER beautiful view. Heard this enough yet? The food was great and we enjoyed a nice [View Full Entry]

Happy Independence Day! Asia » Indonesia » Bali
Today was our first full day in Ubud and it also happened to be Indonesia's Independence day. We left the resort at 9 a.m. and headed to the Ayung river to go white water rafting. WOW doesn't even begin to explain it! what an experience. The river was absolutely beautiful. We were rafting at the bottom of a valley between lush green mountains covered in palm trees. It truly was a surreal experience. Along the way there were several water falls we stopped at and we were able to get out and swim a bit. Also along the way, the local [View Full Entry]

Ubud here we come Asia » Indonesia » Bali
What a journey so far! Today was our last day in Jimbaran :( It has been SO nice here at the Jamahal. All the people were amazing. Every employee greeted us by our names whenever they saw us or even when we called, some of them even recognized our voices over the phone - they were just that good. Always asking us if we need anything or if everything is ok and with huge smiles! Such a great place. We were kinda sad to leave but were looking forward to going to Ubud to The Viceroy. We had late checkout today [View Full Entry]

It's so cute, all the emplyees of the resort address us by Mr. Alan and Mrs. Tayyaba
Today we decided to relax at the resort for a little bit. We started off the day with breakfast served to us at the main pool. It was very nice just relaxing there and watching the waterfall and nature. After breakfast we came back to the villa and scheduled some more spa time :) The receptionist informed us that we would be getting a free upgrade to the luxury spa villa at 12:30! We were so excited and not expecting it as it is high season in Bali right now and most resorts are fully booked. The spa villa was more [View Full Entry]

Another day in Paradise Asia » Indonesia » Bali
Wow! Another great day in Bali. We started our morning early with breakfast in our Villa at 6:45 am. We had to leave our resort at 7:30 am in order to meet our fishing guides by 8. Thats right, fishing. Deep sea fishing was on the agenda today, Trolling fishing to be exact. We arrived both excited and anxious to get out on the water. We took a short car ride to the bay where the boats were tied up and left on the boat from there. There were 3 men on the boat with us who all spoke very little [View Full Entry]

AOA and Hello everyone WOW! We had a full day today! We woke up right before sunrise and got a nice start to our day by taking a short swim in our pool. We had a lovely breakfast and then got ready to meet our driver, Dewa. Our first stop was the Tanah Lot temple, such a beautiful place with so many different things to see. Walked through a local market on the way back to the car. Had lunch at an amazing restaurant overlooking a breathtaking view of rice paddies in the middle of nowhere - it was so nice!

Day 1! Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Denpasar
We are in Bali!! This last 5 hour flight was a breeze compared to our 13 1/2 hour flight. We were able to sleep some more and give our bodies some more rest. After a pretty long line to get through customs, we were greeted by our driver from our resort holding a sign with our names on it. The drive from the airport to the hotel was a short distance but took a little bit of time due to all the traffic!! There are scooters everywhere and people, the road signs and markings don't really mean much to the drivers! [View Full Entry]

Back to my roots... Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta
