Background: The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; the islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared its independence after Japan's surrender, but it required four years of intermittent negotiations, recurring hostilities, and UN mediation before the Netherlands agreed to relinquish its colony. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic state. Current issues include: alleviating widespread poverty, preventing terrorism, continuing the transition to popularly-elected governments after four decades of authoritarianism, implementing reforms of the banking sector, addressing charges of cronyism and corruption, and holding the military and police accountable for human rights violations. Indonesia has been dealing with armed separatist movements in Aceh and in Papua.

So it's been awhile and this is my last post before we head home tomorrow morning. Although I haven't written in over a week, I figured I better finish off the trip by writing something. The last week has been a perfect ending to our trip (yes, despite the enticing prospects of becoming surfer bums and living in bali sipping banana milkshakes for the rest of our lives, we have decided to come home). From Sanur, we went back to Seminyak and Kuta beach. Although we had spent 5 days here previously, we needed to make up our surf lessons that [View Full Entry]

Ok, so this was the second to last stop of my travels and I was getting a bit sick of sight seeing, so I spent my 2 weeks in Bali mainly relaxing on the beach or at the pool, going out with friends, and learning to surf. I didn’t leave the resort town of Kuta for the whole 2 weeks. It was great. I staying in the town of Kuta which is on the west coast of Bali and is definitely one of the most popular/touristy places I have visited so far. There are lots of clubs and restaurants. including big [View Full Entry]

Malaysia; Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Melaka Indonesia; Pekanbaru, Jambi, Palembang, Bandar Lampung, Bandung, Pangandaron, Yogyakarta and Bali After having had a relaxing time in Thailand and a total of 8 non drive days I certainly wasn’t looking forward to the next 10 days of constant driving. Due to the nature of the trip and its time scale unfortunately there are times where long drive days such as 9-13 hours are possible. For me its not so much the long drive days its the constant moving that gets me. Its actually come to the point where I am so used to all the [View Full Entry]

Adika Sari Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Legian
When we arrived back in Bali after our 20minute flight from Mataram, Matt's friend Sim picked us up and took us to the "Adika Sari Hotel". Rooms are good and price is reasonable. Had the next day in Bali to get organised for our G-Land trip. We went surfing in the morning. The beachies were good for a change. In the afternoon we headed off to get tickets and have lunch at Made's. Caught up with Finny at the beach bar. [View Full Entry]

We spent a few days in Ubud sorting our bags out, doing some washing, shopping and eating lots of lovely food! We then decided it was time to see some of the island as we had only been to the harbour and to Ubud so, we set off with Ketut our host, on a trip around the island for the day. We visited Goa Gajah, the elephant cave, followed by Tirta Empul and it's holy springs. From here we went for lunch overlooking Gunung Agung, the holiest peak in all of Bali, it was pretty chilly looking out over the massive [View Full Entry]

Bali 15th-19th July Arrived into Bali at 11.15pm and had to wait an hour and a half to get through customs. Crew from Bali Coconut Hotel waiting to take us to our room. Spent first three days surfing beach breaks (pretty average as banks not very good), getting into the heat and enjoying the local food. Caught up with Nikki and Spok and kids. Also ran into Toots, Anj and Lovey. [View Full Entry]

I returned from my trip to Bali and Gili! (I decided that it was only fair to take a week off from my research, since I still need to finish up with looking at my data and start writing my paper) Here goes… I went to Bali with my friend Tom, who I lived with first year of vet school but then moved to China to work at his family’s business. He was only able to take a long weekend (Thursday through Sunday), and since he was coming all the way from Hong Kong, we really only had 2 full days. [View Full Entry]

Donut post Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Sanur
Greetings using the wifi at dunkin donuts in Sanur. Sanur is a quieter area in Bali on the east coast only about half an hour from where we were in kuta. This is just a quick post to say that we are alive and well. We're so relaxed we have no idea what day it is. We went for adam's last arm follow up appointment today and it's looking a lot better. We don't have any more appointments and Adam should be fully recovered soon. We head back to Kuta on tuesday where we will resume our surfing lessons. We will [View Full Entry]

Bromo-vulkaan II
Bromo-vulkaan II
Hello people Just thought I'd give everyone an update on how things are going in Bali. Well up until a couple of days ago we were both having a lovely time. We've got a really cool apartment/villa on the outskirts of busy Kuta which is the tourist hub of Bali. We are much happier being here coz it's fairly quiet and has a nice community feel about it. I've been getting on with my painting as planned and Matt's been enjoying the surf with a cool break about 500 metres down the road. Sweet! Got a lovely communal swimming pool too [View Full Entry]
