Background: The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; the islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared its independence after Japan's surrender, but it required four years of intermittent negotiations, recurring hostilities, and UN mediation before the Netherlands agreed to relinquish its colony. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic state. Current issues include: alleviating widespread poverty, preventing terrorism, continuing the transition to popularly-elected governments after four decades of authoritarianism, implementing reforms of the banking sector, addressing charges of cronyism and corruption, and holding the military and police accountable for human rights violations. Indonesia has been dealing with armed separatist movements in Aceh and in Papua.

Lieve allemaal! Laatste week Bali...

July 2nd After we enjoyed our last breakfast on our veranda, we packed our goodies, hopped in our Jimny and set off for Lovina, a town on the north coast of Bali. On the way we picked up another tote bag to put our shopping in. We've accumulated a few things since our arrival here and need a spot more space. Driving on these roads isn't as scary as we had thought (we've survived the streets of Vietnam after all). You just have to know that people insist on overtaking on blind corners and hills, and drive with at least half [View Full Entry]

Lombok is not that far from Bali. We first intended to take the fast boat...but when I found out it was double the price than flying...well, we were on another flight. This time only 20 minutes, just the time to go up and down on a Fokker 50 from another Indonesian airlines...but a rather "not old" plane! Welcome to the Island of the Gods. I know that for most people this is a paradise and a destination in itself. For us it is another fun stop-over this time. 2 nights spent enjoying Bali. First, what you won't see this time. June 29th After breakfast Talita went into high gear and quickly arranged a rental car for our stay in Bali. The public transport here is too expensive if you're a tourist (because the rip-off factor is pretty high here). It's a little more expensive but much more convenient to have our own car because we want to travel all over the island and be able to stop and take pictures whenever we please. Later we went to the Internet shop to catch up with some blogging, but Travelblog was having issues so we went walking around town. At one point we [View Full Entry]

bursdagsfest Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta

June 27th Five months to the day after first crossing into the Northern Hemisphere on our trip, we were going to cross the equator again, back to the south. We got a bemo (tiny mini-bus) to the airport, 5km away. It was so tiny we struggled to get our backpacks in. After checking in for our multi-million Rupiah flight we had a long wait in the airport lounge. We saw one other white guy! Amazing! We finally left Tarakan, flew over the equator, had a brief stop-over in Balikpapan, then left Borneo for good. As we arrived in Surabaya, the capital [View Full Entry]

Indonesia - Part One Bali Hello Asia! After a tiring flight and a detour to Singapore we arrived in Bali, Indonesia. Our first stop Kuta! First impressions…lots of motorbikes, dogs, hagglers and surfer dudes. It was no wonder that Bali had been nicknamed Austral-asia. At the first sight of our accommodation that we were staying at that night Kim wanted to burst into tears. To say that our bedroom was no better than a prison cell was an understatement with red patches of paint on the wall that looked home to a bloodbath, smelly wet bed sheets and water that ran [View Full Entry]

We flew from Thailand to Bali on June 11th and did some sightseeing and diving before finding a bungalow to rent in Ubud. Our place is small but comfy and chock full of Balinese style. It’s part of a family compound owned by an artist, his wife and two teen daughters. They are incredibly nice and bring us along to Balinese ceremonies in their neighborhood. Made Tanke, the wife, regularly gives us papayas and green, spiky sour sop fruit from her trees. As you might have guessed, the sour sop is a bit puckery but okay when mixed with other fruit [View Full Entry]
