After a chill day of browsing the local market for souvenirs and getting a massage, I went to bed early since my alarm was set for 1.45am: I was going to do a sunrise hike! At 2.15 we were picked up and by 4am we were hiking up Mount Batur. It was very steep and the way up consisted of a lot of loose stones that caused many people to slip very often - thank god for my hiking boots! Some steps were so high that the guides would pull us up. It was very cloudy but every now and then, the clouds faded and we could see a glimpse of the start of the sunrise. By the time we got to the top and the sun started to appear on the horizon, the clouds disappeared ... read more

After a nice 2:30am wake-up, I had a long day ahead of me. It started great when I found out that the airport had opening times and I had arrived before the doors opened, so I had to wait outside. Luckily, my friends Renee and Filo had some time to keep me occupied on Skype! A 2,5 hour flight was followed by a 7,5 hour layover (yes, you read it right) and then another 6,5 hour flight. This last flight was my first flight ever that left 10 minutes BEFORE scheduled departure. No missing passengers, no one was late, I would call that a miracle. As soon as I walked into the airport hall in Denpasar, Bali, I was overwhelmed by the amount of taxi drivers offering their services. They were very pushy and wouldn't take ... read more

Inevitably the last day of a vacation rolls around and today is our day. We went out for dinner last night and enjoyed the delicious Indonesian food one more time as well as our “free taxi ride” back to our hotel. That idea to get you home safely is a welcome treat at the end of a night. This morning we were still trying to straighten out our “late check out” from the hotel and finally managed to get in touch with our travel agent who in turn made those arrangements. We were to initially check out at 11 am and were not being picked up to go to the airport until 9 pm. Now we can keep our air conditioned room until 6 pm. Our flight leaves Denpasar at 1:05 am for the first leg ... read more

As you may have picked up from previous posts, it is impossible to go anywhere in Bali without encountering temples. It’s said that in Bali, there are more temples than there are houses. Some estimates are even as high as 50,000, in fact. While this may be hard to believe at first, it doesn’t take much time on the island to notice that temples are literally everywhere. Balinese temples, or pura, have strong associations with the number three. Temples are divided into three spaces: an outer courtyard in addition to two holier inner yards. Each temple also has spaces of worship for Hinduism’s three prominent deities: Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. And within the context of a Balinese village, there is also something called the ‘three temple system.’ Each Balinese village contains its own Pura Puseh, Pura ... read more

I was too wordy so had to do two entries! Eventually our bus snaked it’s way up a mountainside where we encountered the northern terraced rice paddies. They were magnificent. We saw many people labouring in the fields. Some of the fields were just being planted while some were being harvested. There was no end to the work and it was all back breaking. There were bamboo huts in rice fields for resting out of the hot sun or eating. These Rice fields are passed down in families through the generations and are well maintained. When harvesting, the rice straw is cut with a scythe and it is tied in bundles. Then it is transported to drying area on a person's head or back or by scooter! After rice the harvest the farmer let’s the rice ... read more

Everyday when going out on our tours the bus would cross the new 8 km bridge from Nusa Dua to Sanur and we would pass by the huge monument statue of Titi Banda which was at the centre of numerous roads converging at the monument. The traffic was always horrendous whenever we passed by but today our private driver boldly stopped our car and ran out into the traffic screaming and with hands waving to stop the cars and scooters to allow us to cross the road to get some good pictures of the monument. The Titi Banda statue represents stories about the character Rama who built the Titi Banda Bridge in the middle of the sea with the help of monkey troops in order to rescue his abducted wife. The statue shows Rama accompanied by ... read more

Although we had some interesting visits to the bird park and the elephant area today I’m going to leave talking about those two experiences to another time. For today’s entry I’m going to focus simply on what I have learned and seen about the Balinese people. In addition to the many tours that we have booked through the travel agency we also arranged to hire a private driver and car for a full day to take us out to see places that were not on the tour schedule. As it turned out yesterday, time with our driver has been the highlight of our trip. Anytime we came across a place that we would like to stop and take a picture all we had to do was ask and he would pull over as soon as he ... read more

Just finished having my “Royal full body massage “ and finishing in time to catch “happy hour” at the poolside bar to enjoy my new favourite beverage.....an “Arak Madur”. The massage took 1 hour and 45 minutes and I have never felt better. Cost was a measly $57 so will likely do that again before we fly out next week. Our favourite bartender, Budi, told us it is unusual for guests to stay for 2 weeks. It seems like all hotel staff have memorized our names and they check in regularly to see how our day has gone. I went down early for breakfast today and the waiter said “ good morning Mr. Brent....where is Missy Dianne?” We must be sure to tip them well in the next few days as everyone has gone out of ... read more

We are now a week into our Bali experience And we continue to learn about the Balinese way of life. Everywhere we have traveled we have encountered numerous temples, ranging from small ones out front of each house to the larger ornate temples at places of worship. Entrances into most buildings are through the traditional “split gates”. Some are quite plain but others are extremely ornate and very beautiful. We had registered our trip with the Canadian Government before leaving and right after the bombings in Jakarta a few days ago, we received an “alert notice” from the Canadian Embassy advising us to stay out of Jakarta. Nice to know they are keeping tabs on us! That being said, we returned from a dinner out in the community last night about 9:00 and had just got ... read more

Our tour ended in Ubud and a number of us stayed for a few days afterwards. I've been to Bali a few times in the past, so used these as rest days (aka there were a lot of massages)...and to catch up on exciting things like laundry.... read more
