Background: The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; the islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared its independence after Japan's surrender, but it required four years of intermittent negotiations, recurring hostilities, and UN mediation before the Netherlands agreed to relinquish its colony. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic state. Current issues include: alleviating widespread poverty, preventing terrorism, continuing the transition to popularly-elected governments after four decades of authoritarianism, implementing reforms of the banking sector, addressing charges of cronyism and corruption, and holding the military and police accountable for human rights violations. Indonesia has been dealing with armed separatist movements in Aceh and in Papua.

After a hectic week or so in Kuta we decided that it was time for another slice of island life. There are not too many options around Bali itself and as we only have a week left in Indonesia we decided on the near by island of Nusa Lembongan, famous for its awesome surf breaks, all of which have very appealing names like ship wrecks and lacerations……. Needless to say we didn’t try our hands at surfing as it was well out of our league! Nusa Lembongan is also well known for its diving, with one dive site in particular being [View Full Entry]

Bali - Day 3 Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud
Day Three - 26 June 09 A very fresh air and peace environment especially in the morning is the best enjoyment as accommodating at this Green Field Bungalow, away from the pick and rush city life. Taman Ayun Temple Same as the day before, En.Wade picked us up at 9am and we first visited Taman Ayun Temple, about 18km north to Denpasar. It is a beautiful old temple (from empire of Mengwi) within a big garden; one of the famous Balinese’s architecture design which is “Multistory roof temple” available here. The temple site is surrounded by fishpond and masonry wall and [View Full Entry]

Kuta and around Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta
Next on our Asian adventure was the hard task of tearing ourselves away from the idyllic paradise of the Gili Islands and head to the manic surfers paradise of Kuta in Bali. After spending 2 ½ hours on a fast boat bouncing off every single wave that the captain could find and Lucy starting to turn a pale shade of green, we arrived at Benoa harbour in Bali where we were whisked into the crazy mixer which is Poppies Gang 1 in Kuta. In contrast to the quiet laid back way of life in the Gili Islands this was a huge [View Full Entry]

Bali - Day 2 Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kintamani
Day Two - 25 June 09 A sunny day, our highlight for today is Goa Gajah Temple, Kintamani, Titra Empul Temple, Tegallalang and end stop at Ubud. On the way to Goa Gajah Temple, we dropped by at Batik Factory, Painting House, Celuk Village, famous with its Gold and Silver work and Mas Village, a wood crafting center. We are introduced to the many varied faces of Bali. Goa Gajah Temple is also known as Elephant Cave, one of the oldest relics in Bali. The whole area is sectioned off into several chambers, each dedicated to a different god or goddess; [View Full Entry]

Between Ubud and Peliatan Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud
We visited our friends in Sanur. They left Belgium two years ago, a decision they did not regret at all. They were the ‘mystery guests” that made an evaluation of ‘Mandala Desa’ for us. We reported about the failure of our project. They suggested we should talk to a Belgian man who had been living in Bali for a long time, knew the island well and definitely would give us advice. His house, close to Ubud, was said to be for sale. We made an appointment and had a nice conversation with an extravert and open person, who told us one [View Full Entry]

Relaxing in Luxury After our first few nights in Bali, we wanted to start making our way into the country a bit more. We cashed in some Starwood points to stay at the Le Meridien. The hotel is on the water, set up on a cliff overlooking the crashing waves and a famous Hindu temple, Purah Tanah Lot. Once again we were rewarded with a two room suite with a balcony overlooking the resort and the water. The hotel itself was beautiful with relaxing and lush pools. There was no beach, however, because below the cliff were rock formations - [View Full Entry]

It's nearly been a week since we last said anything to you guys so thought we should check in! From Lovina we headed down the coast and went to Tulamben (which I, tiff still cannot say without getting it wrong). Tulamben is absolutely tiny, and there was just one restaurant. We stayed in some bungalows owned by the diving school, got kept up half the night by random dogs woofing- I believe the technical term is barking, and some bloody roosters crowing, from about 2am onwards. Anyway the next morning we got up, donned our rather attractive wet suits and headed [View Full Entry]

The Taxi driver who drove me to Suvarnabhumi Airport is named Sukhumnipursriniram. I’m mot sure I spelled his name correctly. I haven’t the foggiest idea how to say it correctly either. It’s a long ass name, longer even than the Hawaiian Superman Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. Actually Bruddah Iz is not the Hawaiian Superman. He just wrote and sang a song called Maui, Da Hawaiian Supaman. But at least I know how to say Kamakawiwo’ole correctly, with the proper accent and all. A dubya ain’t always pronounced like no dubya in Hawaiian. Sometimes it&rsquo [View Full Entry]
