Background: The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; the islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared its independence after Japan's surrender, but it required four years of intermittent negotiations, recurring hostilities, and UN mediation before the Netherlands agreed to relinquish its colony. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic state. Current issues include: alleviating widespread poverty, preventing terrorism, continuing the transition to popularly-elected governments after four decades of authoritarianism, implementing reforms of the banking sector, addressing charges of cronyism and corruption, and holding the military and police accountable for human rights violations. Indonesia has been dealing with armed separatist movements in Aceh and in Papua.

July 11th We had a lazy day reading, washing clothes, snoozing and snacking on delicious pineapple pancakes covered with honey and ice-cream. After a nap we found a resort that sold the wi-fi credits we were looking for (it cost three times as much as the same credits in Lovina! Ouch!). What’s weird is the lack of wi-fi in Bali. This is such a huge tourist hotspot and yet there are almost no wi-fi service providers. Even in Vietnam, which the rest of Asia considers to be a little backward, you can't turn around without running into a free wi-fi hotspot. [View Full Entry]

Life is a Beach! Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta
Howdy everyone! I must say that I have fallen in love with Indonesia even though I have only been here for under 2 weeks. Everyone is super friendly, food and drinks are cheap, and the scenery is absolutely beautiful. Especially after hanging out on the beach for a few days now its definitely going to be hard to leave. But until August 4th comes around, I'm trying to keep the thoughts of not being here out of my head. Our Indonesian adventure began when we flew into Bandung which is located in western Java. We were planning on staying there just [View Full Entry]

I know it has been a while since our last blog. We have been so busy doing so many things and as well Niki has been a little sick. She is on antibiotics now so all is good. Where to start... Well our first day in Indonesia we flew into Bundung. It was a crazy city. Our taxi could barley drive through the streets. After we got our hostel figured out we thought that we should go to the train station to buy some tickets for the next day to go to Yogyakarta. When we arrived at the train station we [View Full Entry]

July 8th This morning we snorkeled the Drop-Off. It was an interesting spot with little shallow coral and plenty of fish. Highlights were one Nudibranch, three small Black-Spotted Toadfish and one big Barracuda. Back at home we napped and read most of the afternoon, then went hunting for wi-fi airtime. We were unable to locate a place where we could buy some credits but ran into a South African guy. We started chatting and soon his girlfriend joined us. Sean and Wendy live in the UK and they're also traveling for an extended time. After a brief chat we said goodbye [View Full Entry]

Six Days in Bali Asia » Indonesia » Bali
Bali is a place I'd always wanted to "experience", and I was lucky enough to get down there for a short week before leaving Asia. Flying on a night flight to Denpasar from Shanghai via Singapore, I arrived on this lovely island at noon on Friday, July 3. A taxi took me up into the mountains to the town of Ubud, where I spent three nights. I then had "Agung" drive me to Amed on the east coast of the island and spent another three nights there. Yesterday morning, another driver and I did the 3-hour trip down south to the [View Full Entry]

Landung Denpasar.

Dann in Bali. Landung Denpasar. Tausen [View Full Entry]

The best place Asia » Indonesia » Bali
Occasionally on my many travels, plenty of travellers would ask me curiously what is the best place I have been to. Of course, this is a question that is extremely difficult to answer for many reasons. For one, you may have had an amazing experience in a place due to the people you happened to be with or just bump into. Perhaps it was due to your particular state of mind you were in at the the time or even something simple as that the weather was amazing that could even turn a dreary city into paradise. You could say it [View Full Entry]

July 5th After a delicious breakfast we said a sad farewell to Kuba Lalang. Of all the places we've stayed on our travels, this was by far the best (and not even close to the most expensive). Our time here has been like a second honeymoon and we'll definitely return one day. Just before noon we set off east toward Tulamben. We were warned that there's no ATM there so we stopped for a fat chunk of cash in Singaraja. Once outside town the road condition deteriorated rapidly. We were bouncing all over the place and couldn't dream of averaging more [View Full Entry]
