Background: The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; the islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared its independence after Japan's surrender, but it required four years of intermittent negotiations, recurring hostilities, and UN mediation before the Netherlands agreed to relinquish its colony. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic state. Current issues include: alleviating widespread poverty, preventing terrorism, continuing the transition to popularly-elected governments after four decades of authoritarianism, implementing reforms of the banking sector, addressing charges of cronyism and corruption, and holding the military and police accountable for human rights violations. Indonesia has been dealing with armed separatist movements in Aceh and in Papua.

Bromo-vulkaan II
Bromo-vulkaan II

Hello people Just thought I'd give everyone an update on how things are going in Bali. Well up until a couple of days ago we were both having a lovely time. We've got a really cool apartment/villa on the outskirts of busy Kuta which is the tourist hub of Bali. We are much happier being here coz it's fairly quiet and has a nice community feel about it. I've been getting on with my painting as planned and Matt's been enjoying the surf with a cool break about 500 metres down the road. Sweet! Got a lovely communal swimming pool too [View Full Entry]

We've spent most of yesterday and today hanging around the pool at our hotel. The majority of our routine has rotated between sunbathing, napping, swimming and getting more drinks. It's the rough life, I know. Today I was reflecting that every single late night at the Sultan was absolutely worth it to be able to take in this little bit of Paradise. The last couple of days have also been low key because we've spent both mornings going back to the clinic for follow-up on Adam's arm. The first day we initially went to the clinic (when he was prescribed the [View Full Entry]

Tauchen Bali Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Nusa Penida

Zomerdrukte in Bali Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud
[View Full Entry]

We're in love with Ubud!! Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud
Well we have made it to Ubud (Bali), been here now for a few days, its so Arty and the architecture something else. Since last I wrote in Gili Air my friend Cheryl has joined me and has not run away yet, lol. We had a week together enjoying the sun and I managed to fit in a load of diving and a few sharks! (very beautiful). From Gili Air we boarded a boat on our komodo adventure, 4 days and 4 nights aboard our little boat with around 12 others sleeping on deck - oh how our bottoms ached by [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Sanur with 16 days to kill before our flight to Australia. The challenge was deciding which beach to sit on for all those days??.... it's a tough life travelling! ;-) As we strolled along the shore looking at the miles of beach we were approached by a number of touts offering us cheap rooms so we checked a few before finding a little gem tucked away down a back alleyway called Little Pond. The guesthouse had two rows of rooms facing each other with a small pool in between. The rooms were very basic but for 5.50 a [View Full Entry]

Back in KL, Charlotte left back to Honk Kong. And another friend of mine from Madagascar came to KL. So we decided to go to Bali. She's exactly like me, she goes where the wind 's bringing her. What an amizing trip, Bali! I've heard it's such a nice place. We took a plane from KL for 500 Ringit quiet cheap. We brought 250 Euro each for 2 weeks, it was largely enough! So we were on the road again. [View Full Entry]
