Background: The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; the islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared its independence after Japan's surrender, but it required four years of intermittent negotiations, recurring hostilities, and UN mediation before the Netherlands agreed to relinquish its colony. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic state. Current issues include: alleviating widespread poverty, preventing terrorism, continuing the transition to popularly-elected governments after four decades of authoritarianism, implementing reforms of the banking sector, addressing charges of cronyism and corruption, and holding the military and police accountable for human rights violations. Indonesia has been dealing with armed separatist movements in Aceh and in Papua.

“With its pounding surf, emerald-green rice terraces and exceptionally artistic culture, the small volcanic island of Bali has long been Indonesia’s premier tourist destination.” - The Rough Guide to Southeast Asia. Bali has long been a favourite holiday destination for Australians, akin to the way Irish and English flock to the resorts in Spain. Most remember Bali being in the news for all the wrong reasons in 2002, when 2 bombs rocked a nightclub and an Irish bar in Kuta, Bali’s most famous resort, killing over 200 people, the majority being Australian holiday make [View Full Entry]

I bet I can guess your name Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Amed
It only took us about two weeks to learn everyone in Bali's first name, and really it probably shouldn't have taken that long. There's a simple naming system that all the native Balinese use and it goes like this: first child is Wayan, second child is Made, third is Koman, fourth is Ketut. After the fourth, the system repeats, so number five is Wayan, number six is Made, etc. For a boy you insert "I" at the front of the name, for a girl "Ni". So if a family has a boy and then a girl, their names would be IWayan [View Full Entry]

Bali steckt voller ueberraschun [View Full Entry]

(Day 510 on the road) I think my timing to visit Bali was not quite the best. The main tourist area of Kuta was super-crowded when I was there, mostly by vacationing Australians (some of which are simply amazing on their surf boards), who seemed to have taken over the place. It also didn't help that I arrived late at night - I spent a good two hours looking for a place to crash, checking more than thirty hotels, guesthouses and homestays. All full, crazy! Just as I was thinking I would have to spend the night at the beach I [View Full Entry]

We had another early flight, and had to spend 3 hours in the airport to get there. When we got to our room and after the Mandarin it was a bit of a shock of the state of the room. You may think we have become snobs of hotels but the bathroom was outside so was exposed to all the elements.. After begging and pleading to jen and Vik they allowed us to stay in there family room which was a 1 up and 1 down. We decided to go to the beach, it was possibly the dirtiest beaches I have [View Full Entry]

Sam's turn to write: Sometimes conversation with people here can be downright silly. We don't speak Indonesian (much) and they generally don't speak English (much). We met an Indonesian fellow on a bus in Jogja who insisted his name was "Adam". Here's an excerpt: Adam: (pointing to a large grocery store) "Dis es place foh shopping. You like shopping?" Me: "Well...yeah. I kind of do like to go grocery shopping." Adam: (long pause. Blank stare. He didn't understand) Adam: "You like shopping?" Me: "...Yes..." Adam: (looking very pleased now) "Why do you like shopping?" Me: "....well. [View Full Entry]

I leave the familiar country of Australia to go somewhere completely different and strange to me... Bali, Indonesia. Maartje and I get money out at the airport... What's the exchange rate here?? How much money am I even taking out?? Haha, confused already. We learned later that the exchange is 10,000 rupiah to $USD1... this is awesome! We headed outside to catch a cab: 50,000 Rp and that was expensive. We get to Kuta and after a little confusion we finally found our room and settled in. (You can't book the cheap hotels online so we were relying on our friends [View Full Entry]

From Siem Reap we caught a bus to Bangkok where we spent a few days before flying to Bali. We stayed on the Khao San Road, and having just been in Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia we were definitely back in the land of the 'Golden Arches' with avengeance! The street was swarming with Western tourists and neon lights. Bars and stalls lined the street, selling t-shirts, jewelery, pirate DVDs and CDs, hair braiding, pad thai and souvenirs. Perhaps because of its notoriety as a "crazy" place, Khao San (and as it turned out, Bangkok in general) seemed to us to be [View Full Entry]
