Background: The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; the islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared its independence after Japan's surrender, but it required four years of intermittent negotiations, recurring hostilities, and UN mediation before the Netherlands agreed to relinquish its colony. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic state. Current issues include: alleviating widespread poverty, preventing terrorism, continuing the transition to popularly-elected governments after four decades of authoritarianism, implementing reforms of the banking sector, addressing charges of cronyism and corruption, and holding the military and police accountable for human rights violations. Indonesia has been dealing with armed separatist movements in Aceh and in Papua.

a BIG boat Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Amed

I am completely exhausted and could go a little 5* right about now... Backpacking for 30 days around Bali in the heat has completely worn me out.. 2 weeks probably would have been enough, still you dont know till you experience it do you... So... my thoughts on Bali... Kuta and Ubud are the two sizzling hot and very cool spots to visit on anyones itinerary... however the rest of Bali did absolutely [View Full Entry]

Ubud Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud
Ubud Arrived to Denpasar after a lovely 16hour bus ride, wasn’t so bad actually nice comfy seats etc. Then got a motorbike taxi to Ubud, complete with 20kg bag and day pack - yes on a motorbike, the main rules of the road to remember here is there are no rules! Its every man for himself, nobody gives way, pedestrians are given no right of way even on a foot path where you will find cars and bikes sneaking up, and both drive the wrong way down a busy main road…..so with all that in mind, we set off to Ubud! Kuta & Gilli Islands & Lovina Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta
Kuta Adrian (Aussie guy I met in ubud) had hired a car, so we went for a mooch in the countryside before hitting the legend known as Kuta! As soon as we got there, we were surrounded by so many Australian tourists! It’s like their version of Malaga or something to us! Hit the beach straight away and was sitting mindin my own business when someone walking past stops and stares at me…its only Maximiillien Maximus! The one and only! Haha I have seen this guy so many times on this trip! So spent afternoon catching up and spent about a [View Full Entry]

Indonesia Round Two Asia » Indonesia » Bali
After eleven days in Sabah, Borneo, I/we were ready to leave and start the second part of the vacation in Indonesia. Still, getting out of Sabah meant sitting and waiting whilst our Air Asia flight was delayed to Jakarta. There was quite a large storm taking place outside so we just had to wait for it to clear. Kota Kinabalu airport was so small, with hardly enough seating to hold the passengers on all the delayed flights. Tara and I had to pass the time by playing 'What would you rather?', a game which became a daily ritual in the end. [View Full Entry]

Bali to Lombok Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Sanur
Where do i start? The beginning? It's so hectic here you forget where you are sometimes! Or at least our driver did! We fly into Bali in the evening and not really wanting to get here and find accommodation, transport etc etc we had it all prebooked. Arrive to the driver holding a sign. Mr Whidrab. That's another name for the list. He led us to the car to take us to Sanur for our lodgings for the next couple of days. Put the key in to unlock it but it wouldn't unlock? After trying the rest of the doors he [View Full Entry]

Arriving back on Bali we head out to Tampaksiring for our week of work at the Senang Hati foundation. Senang Hati is a center in Bali who for the past 6 years has been taking in people from across Bali with disabilities to give them a better life. Balinese Hindus believe that those who bear a disabled child must've done something wrong in a previous life and are being punished. Karma. It is for this reason that they find disability something to be ashamed of and therefore hide their children away from society. Some people before coming here had lived most [View Full Entry]

The dream beach

“With its pounding surf, emerald-green rice terraces and exceptionally artistic culture, the small volcanic island of Bali has long been Indonesia’s premier tourist destination.” - The Rough Guide to Southeast Asia. Bali has long been a favourite holiday destination for Australians, akin to the way Irish and English flock to the resorts in Spain. Most remember Bali being in the news for all the wrong reasons in 2002, when 2 bombs rocked a nightclub and an Irish bar in Kuta, Bali’s most famous resort, killing over 200 people, the majority being Australian holiday make [View Full Entry]

I bet I can guess your name Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Amed
It only took us about two weeks to learn everyone in Bali's first name, and really it probably shouldn't have taken that long. There's a simple naming system that all the native Balinese use and it goes like this: first child is Wayan, second child is Made, third is Koman, fourth is Ketut. After the fourth, the system repeats, so number five is Wayan, number six is Made, etc. For a boy you insert "I" at the front of the name, for a girl "Ni". So if a family has a boy and then a girl, their names would be IWayan [View Full Entry]
