Jaipur is a little over 300 kilometers from Delhi and it took me about 5 hours to reach it by train. The train actually wasn’t that bad, and the service was pretty good. You got a bottle of water, a snack, and breakfast/dinner. It also had a western style toilet was good. One of the first shocks I got upon reaching India was the abundance of squat toilets. Most of the tourist places have western styled ones, but I quickly learned to always bring toilet paper because most of them had none. Jaipur is famous for it’s rugs and textiles, semi-precious stones, and polo. There I was met by my guide, a local law student, who’s name was Vijay Singh. It was interesting to learn about the caste structure that is somewhat still relevant in the ... read more

CASTE SYSTEM Everyone talks about the caste system in India and how archaic it is. But living in it, and seeing it, is much different than hearing about it. At the Taj Mahal, there were a pack of dogs that were barking and nipping at another dog who scuttled away. Isn’t that a caste system? At the Academy Awards, only famous and rich people will be allowed at the parties. Isn’t that a caste system? The royalty of England can openly cheat on their wives, yet are not looked down upon, but rather talked about even more. Isn’t that a caste system? O.J. can be declared innocent, because well, he’s O.J.. Isn’t that a caste system? In the U.S., people like to spout that the American dream is still alive and well. But let’s get real, ... read more

STD There are many ads for phone service here. In particular, there is one GSM service called Hutch that has ads everywhere. They consist of a Pug looking cute for the camera. Now what makes this story amusing, is that at every phone place, there is a sign that says STD. For the longest time, I had no idea what STD stood for. I knew it had something to do with phone service, but picture me walking into the phone store and asking to purchase an STD. It seems like if I really wanted one, I could get it for free. Or if I got three-way (calling) on my phone, will I automatically get an STD or is that extra? You see why I didn’t want to even go in to ask. I looked in up ... read more

Hey all, as you can obviously see I'm still alive. Sorry it took so long for me to update this, and unfortunately this isn't really even going to be a real update. It's been tough for me to get to a computer with the internet and all, so that's why it's taken so long for me to update. Well, I do have a couple minutes, so I'll say a couple words. Well, how do I start this... Holy crap! This is a crazy place. Sandi and I (even though it's only been about a week now) have already had so many crazy adventures. We had a very sketchy first night in New Delhi. There are soooo many scam artists here. Of course we've been nailed a couple of times. But we're starting to know the ropes. ... read more

Delhi to Jaipur I have spent five days overall in Delhi & have managed to see everything listed in the guide book! I saw loads of tombs and temples along the way from all different faiths, most of which were very impressive. Two of the highlights were, the Lotus Temple which is a vast cathedral sized space designed in the shape of a lotus flower which was amazingly peaceful & the pair of white tigers at the Delhi zoo which were very handsome creatures, its a terrible shame they will probably not be around much longer. Delhi was an exhausting city, it was so busy and by the end I was very pleased to be leaving. On my penultimate night there I met my Intrepid group who consisted of 2 Danes 1 Finn and 7 aussies, ... read more

This probably won't come as much of a surprize but India is very polluted. The streets are full of rubbish, there are open sewers and people 'relieve themselves' just about everywhere. I was thinking that the government should do something about this (there are no bins anywhere for example) but I got to thinking that the government have a lot more urgent issues to deal with before they can get to cleaning up the streets. For one thing there are so many familes living on the streets who don't have anywhere to sleep not to mind somewhere to put their rubbish. There is also so much noise pollution. The sound of auto-rickshaws, motorcycles, cars and trucks is constant and there is the incessant beeping of horns. There are people everywhere so there is non-stop people noise ... read more

A restfull night we had on the train to Jaipur from Jaisalmer. Jaipur is also a very crowded city. We were expecting the Pink City area calm but it wasn't. We took a fuul day tour from the tourist office at the railway station. Although the price of the tour was very cheap, many extras made the bill high. 180 inR for the museum, 10 inR for observatory area, few other entrances and the lunch we paid 255inR for two. Nice places we have visited but we were expecting to see them more clean and painted clean. The history of Jaipur is not older than 500 years. Unfortunately we didn't find what we dreamed for this city. In the afternoon we left for Agra by train. Agra is also a very rush city with its crowds. ... read more

Jaipur again is a very busy city. It seems very dirty even compared to Delhi. We rove through a couple of nice areas yesterday but in general it has been dirty and very polluted. On the way in we stopped at the "Monkey Temple". It was a bit of a trek up past a series of temples and up e steep hill but once you got to the top there were amazing views over the whole of Jaipur. Today we have been to the two hill forts (Tiger & Jahgir). These were huge and also gave great views over the city and surrounding area. We didn't go to Amber fort as we ran out of time. We just saw an procession going down the street and followed it for a while. From what we could gather ... read more

Hello everyone - I hope you're all doing well, Well, we are having an adventure round Rajasthan at the moment!! We have arranged to do a 12 day tour, with a driver taking us between places. The journeys have been long, but it is interesting to see the countryside and people going about their normal business. Rural life is in stark constrast to the desperate begging and squalor which seems to surround the main tourist sites. We are learning lots of interesting stuff from out driver, although there is the occasional comical language barrier - he has quite a strong accent and his brilliant joke about a big white sikh temple near Agra being the Taj Mahal fell a bit flat when we believed him, started oooing and aaaaahing, then realised he was joking and felt ... read more

We are now in Jaipur in Rajasthan at the start of our twelve day tour with our own driver and car! Before we left Delhi we had an amazing meal with the Drakes at Claridges hotel but I felt a little out of place with my baggy trousers and back-pack on, and the door man looked blankly at us when we asked for a taxi to return us to our less glamourous side of town! After leaving delhi we came to Agra to see the red fort and the Taj Mahal which was amazing. The sheer enormity of the palace is outstanding and every stone is carved with followers and inlaid with semi-precious stones. We ended up hiring a guide to take us to a short cut as the queue was about 2 hours long. This ... read more
