So today Brian and I made plans for the rest of our trip. We are working until the 15th of July, and then the night of the fifteenth we are taking a train from Jaipur bound for Amritsar, which is the capital of Punjab. Before we get there, however, we're going to transfer trains a couple times with the goal of ending up in Dharamsala before nightfall on the 16th. Dharamsala is the seat of the Tibetan government in exile and the home of the Dalai Lama. It's supposed to be a very relaxing place with great Himalayan views and lots of friendly Tibetan monks. We had plans for getting way into the Himlayas, but decided it involved too much bus travel with lots of hairpin turns, and wouldn't have been relaxing at all. This way ... read more

Me and my friend Tom who I met on the way go to Amristar, the Sikh capital of India and pay a visit to there holy monument the Golden Temple. Then we move swiftly back to Delhi, and for some reason decide to take the ordinary class train which is 12 hours. Ordinary class is the lowest class on the trains in India and we thought it would be an experience, which it was, but we were cramed in like sardines and there was no way of sleeping, but there were other locals who were worst off than us so who had to stand the whole 12 hours from 9.30pm top 9.30 am so I couldn't complain, I would just never do it again for a journey as long as that. Arrive in Delhi to meet ... read more

Ok, so my coworker (the one I live with) is clearly incapable of taking photos, so some of these didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped, but here you go....photos of an Indian wedding. Actually, upon further inspection, I've realized these are mostly photos of Brian and I dressed up for the wedding. Oops...well, there wasn't much to see there anyway. :)... read more

Well, unfortunately guys, I left my camera at home, so I'll put pictures from this weekend up tomorrow. Friday night Brian and I were invited to the wedding of a friend of one of his coworkers at a five-star hotel here in Jaipur. We were so excited, we got all dressed up in our Indian finery and headed over. It is definitely wedding season in Jaipur, which means there are lots of decorated white horses and elephants roming the streets, traffic is backed up because of wedding processions, and the nights are lit up with fireworks (unfortunately sometimes right next to our house). So we arrived at the hotel to learn that our hostess (Brian's coworker) was running on Indian time and would be about an hour late. We hung out in the rooftop lounge, had ... read more

India is definitely growing on us. We've made our way to Jaipur, which is a very different city from Agra and (what we saw of) New Delhi. First, it seems to have a middle class, driving around town in regular cars and shopping among the sari stalls at the bazaar. They are marketed to by billboards advertizing condos, clothing, and brand new shopping centers, just like any other city. The old part of the city, laid out by Maharaja Jai Singh 400 years ago, is by far the most organized (not to be confused with orderly) place we've been in India--a 4 by 8 grid of streets, with vendors loosely grouped by product. All in all, a walk around Jaipur's old city made for teriffic sightseeing and gift shopping--and plenty of haggling experience--and we seemed to ... read more

Well Jaipur is pretty spectacular too! India has so much to offer, but more then the sites, it's the culture that continuously stuns us. The entire trip has been amazing, with lots of smiles and even more great tales... Anyways, here are some pics from Jaipur (where on one street you can see a Benz, a tractor, and a camel all waiting at the same stop light! Off to Mumbai from here and then home to enjoy the calm. xox... read more

India never ceases to amaze me. I was sitting at my desk doing some work a few minutes ago, when all of a sudden I heard glass shattering. A lot of it. It turns out we are having another monsoon storm roll into town, and, as usual, there was the requisite sandstorm. This one, however, is the worst one I've seen. The doors to the office were blowing open, and I guess the pressure change opened one of the interior doors. The door slammed so hard that the glass shattered in the frame of the door, right next to my desk. We had to lock the front doors of the office to prevent anymore damage. Looks like it will be another crazy night for weather. At least it's cooled off nicely:) ... read more

Well, I've just made an executive decision, and changed my flight to come home at the beginning of August instead of August 23rd as planned. I managed to get away with only paying a change fee (there was no increase in the price of the ticket), and I arrive back in Austin at noon on August 3rd. I don't know yet if Brian will be coming with me or not. He's wanting to see if he can start his work-study job at Penn early so he can be earning money (since that's something neither of us have been able to do in India) before he makes the decision to come home or not. I'm really happy about my choice. Yes, to change my ticket cost more than I make in a month in India, and I ... read more

Our arrival was at 11:00am after getting up at 4am to catch the train to Jaipur from Delhi. The train was awesome, and only took 4 hours. They served us a meal and brought us tea two times in 4 hours. Plus we had loads of leg room. I still believe trains are the best way to travel. After fending off a number of rickshaw wallahs and autorickshaw wallahs, beggars, children, sales people, their relatives and friends, we were still stuck with one guy that walked with us for more than half a block. Nabil and I thought this was hilarious at first, but we quickly started getting annoyed. He wouldn't leave, even though we were getting progressively more pissed off and agressive towards him. Also, we were getting hopelessly lost. Jaipur is a confusing city ... read more

Well folks, another weekend down, and unfortunately this one didn't live up to the fabulous weekends we've been having over the last month. Which isn't to say it didn't have its fair share of excitement. The first thing worth mentioning is that starting Thursday Jaipur began a series of two hour power cuts from eight to ten a.m. Now, normally I would be asleep at that time, and it would be fine, except that when the power cuts out, the air cooler and the fan go with it, and my room gets unbearably hot. On Saturday it got so hot I started feeling very ill, so I didn't go to work. Well, once I'd had plenty of water and sat in front of the air cooler, I felt fine, but it was really upleasant for a ... read more
