Hey guys, just some quick logistical stuff. After comments from a couple of people, I realized that I've been resizing my images way to small, so I went back to about half my photos (just the good ones) and changed them to a bigger size. Now you can click on them to enlarge them. The second thing is, my phone isn't working. At first I thought it was because I hadn't given my complete residence information when I first bought the phone (to buy a phone in India, you need a copy of your passport, a passport photo, proof of residence, and about a hundred other things), but I called the store and fixed that. The only explanation now is that I've already used up the Rs 900 of talk time I'd put on it when ... read more

Hey folks, this is a short entry, but I'd just like to commemorate a major anniversary. It's been a month since I left the U.S., and it will be two months from today that I board a plane in Delhi to head home. I'm only a third of the way through my trip, but I can say that this will be one of the more formative experiences of my life. Brian and I both agree that no matter how hard our lives may seem to us in the U.S., we must always be grateful for the basic things we take for granted: a bed, constantly available water and power, a sit toilet and shower, A/C. And we must remember that aside from not having what we consider to be basic comforts, there are so many in ... read more

From Agra we caught the bus to Jaipur in Rajasthan. As we drew closer the landscaped changed, becoming more desert like with dust and sand everywhere, scabby trees and basically just dust on the horizon. And of course there was a steaming hot desert wind to match. There were camels though, and that made it all worth it. Have to have a special mention for our guesthouse, Hotel Pearl Palace - it is an awesome building all done up with local art, handicrafts, and plants. The rooftop restaurant has awesome wrought iron chairs in the shape of animals and a giant peacock on the roof. The view over the city is pretty awesome, especially at sunset, when it finally cools a little. We also got a room with a TV here which meant we got some ... read more

I just stood outside for the last twenty minutes or so on the steps of my office watching thick, heavy drops of rain soak the earth outside my office. I've noticed here in Jaipur that the smell of wet earth is particularly strong. I knew it was raining outside because I could smell it coming through the air cooler vent. Unlike at home, here in India the earth smells slightly spicy and, just like at home, a little musty. Rain in Jaipur is good because it settles the pervasive dust and sand, but because this is a desert and the earth is so dry, the water just pools up in the roads, creating lots of puddles to avoid. The rain takes on a magical quality in Jaipur, where the days are constantly long, sunny, and dusty. ... read more

So here I am, on my lunch break, snacking on lovely, thick, fluffy, fresh-baked pita bread, and some kind of mayonnaise-based spread with cheese and mushroom flavoring at my desk, and I thought, "Hey, maybe I should put up a blog about my wonderful, pinch-me-am-I-still-in-Jaipur weekend." Saturday night was Brian's first event for his company, and it was a blast. Brian's boss is friends with a factory owner, so the owner let them use an abandoned factory building to set up a dance floor and a serious DJ system. The theme of the party was "Rain Factory" and in honor of the impending monsoon, rain makers were set up over the dance floor so that it was like dancing in a storm. The music was decent, and the best part was there were free snacks, which ... read more

So, I had a request to say more about my work, and this entry is devoted to that. I think it apt, since it is 11:00 on a Saturday morning, and here I am, at my office. I work from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. every day but Sunday. I have been told that I can get the occasional Saturday off, but Brian also has to work on Saturdays, so there's not much point. I have realized that right now my job is a glorified data entry position. I spent the first part of the week taking more than 350 photos of some sixty items which are going on the website, despite my protests that I am by no means a professional photographer. Then, I had to create an inventory database, which I finished a few ... read more

Well, folks, yesterday marked two weeks in Jaipur. Brian and I moved on Tuesday into the house of my co-worker and immediately realized we'd made a mistake. Her parents are just creepy. Not in a homicidal way, but in a "I'm not sure I want to be living under the authority of these people for the next two months" way. They don't smile. And if Brian or I get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom or get water (no filter....so we're a little iffy on the water), they get out of bed and stand at the doorway of their room and watch us until we go back to bed. So another move is in order. Luckily, at the all-Jaipur trainee dinner last night (there are approximately 40 or 50 trainees ... read more

So despite the fact that I'm required to work six day weeks here, I had a nice weekend (or rather, a nice Sunday). On Saturday, I met Brian and his coworker Ishaan (who's about our age) at Mr. Beans, which is another little Western haven in the craziness of Jaipur. We hung out there for a while, and Ishaan called a few of his friends, who joined us. Mr. Beans has excellent Kit-Kat shakes and it's a nice, air-conditioned place to hang out. We made plans to get together again on Sunday, and Brian and I went home and watched the episodes of Desperate Housewives I've been downloading off of iTunes. Sunday I was exhausted, so I didn't get up and moving until quite late in the afternoon. At 5:30, Ishaan and company came to pick ... read more

A few quick updates: last night Brian and I went to go check out the potential new apartment, which was nice, but the price kept changing. We're a little wary. Right now though, we've agreed to room, dinner four nights a week, and access to the washing machine for Rs 4500 a month (about $100). It's cheaper than where we are now, includes at least some food, and is much closer to our workplaces, so we won't be spending so much taking rickshaws to work in the morning. Also, (joy of joys), it is supposed to rain tomorrow, which means the temperature will drop considerably. In the week that I've been here, the average temperature has been 107 degrees F, and Sunday and Monday it was 111 degrees. Today it was already much cooler in the ... read more

Hi guys. Sorry for the abrubt ending last time...I've been having a bit of Delhi Belly and had to flee. So things are looking much better since my last post, and I've had some priceless Indian experiences in the last few days. As Brian and I were walking home from the internet cafe, we passed by these gardens where they were blaring really good popular Indian music, so Brian and I stood by the door watching a group of people doing some Indian style wrist flicking and shoulder shaking until we were invited in. It turns out it was a reception for a wedding (it's wedding season in Jaipur, and Brian and I saw no less than five wedding processions on the way home Sunday night), and I got dragged onto the dance floor. Unfortunately for ... read more
