Here we are in India! Quite a culture shock - we don't know anything - but we're managing and getting wiser by the day. Our hotel reservation was cancelled with an apology in Delhi, forcing us to replan and leave immediately for Jaipur! Travel by road is harrowing but has a strange flow involving heavy use fo the horn and intimidation. It's quite dry and rocky in this region with scrub vegetation. After a good night's rest we feel more like ourselves today. Some pictures of the Amer fort and other sights attached, the fort is just huge.... read more

Got an early morning (I'm throwing away the alarm clock after this) bus to Jaipur, also known as the pink city. The reason for this is pretty obvious when you get there and its not because its fabulous. Again, then journey wasnt too bad, except for a 20 minute spell of someone on the bus deciding to air every single ringtone on his phone and a testing time for my bladder (there's one toilet stop in 6 hours). Jaipur is a richer city, though you see more crowded buses here. I counted about 20 people sitting, quite nonchalently, on top of one bus as it over took us. The drivers here are brilliant, they can manoeuvre their vehicles though the smallest gaps and busiest roads. You can tell by the dents that perhaps it was a ... read more

The desert state of Rajastahn is the India of legend and folklore, with towering forts, ornate palaces, bustling markets and remote camel safaris. Men wear turbans and knee length cotton tunics over their trousers, while the women favor brightly embroidered saris. Fresh from the drizzling rain of Paris, the heat, noise and color were definitely a shock when we arrived in the provincial capital of Jaipur! Cars, motorcycles, autorickshaws (something like a golf cart with two seats and open sides) and bicycles compete for space on the crowded roads, weaving forward to occupy any available place regardless of lane lines or traffic signals. Just crossing the street was an adventure at first, but we followed the locals and learned to negotiate gaps in the traffic. Jaipur has been known as the “Pink City” since 1876 when ... read more

With my desperately required emergency cash safely stashed away, I decided that a spot of rest and relaxation would be the order of the day before the upcoming cricket match and so I caught a bus to the holy Hindu pilgimage town of Pushkar with a few English travellers. The journey itself, although pretty uncomfortable, only took three and a half hours and cost the equivalent of about one pound fifty, which isn't bad at all. After a day in Pushkar I was bored rigid, as there isn't anything to do once you've seen the lake and the sunset, which takes about five minutes. Most people that hang out in Pushkar are aging hippies and/or smokers who sit around all day philosophising on the meaning of life and practising obscure yoga techniques. There's no alcohol, no ... read more

my blog is now over a month behind, i've actually left india, arrived in nepal, and have gone on to thailand now. but the internet connections here aren't painfully slow, so I hope to get a chance to catch up. sorry. The last part of my India trip was to check out the "golden triangle," which is a series of three tourist attractions in Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur. I actually cheated a little bit and did Delhi separately, but when I returned from southern India, I met up with two other RUCHI volunteers, Gail and Richard. Gail and Richard are a couple who are affiliated with RUCHI through its connection with the rotary club in New Zealand. They were a great couple to travel with because they always found something positive to say about whatever we ... read more

wow, so much seems to have happened since i did this blog last, where to begin!!? well, after a few days in dirty smelly mumbai we gladly headed off to Jaipur better known as the pink city. it was a relief to get out of mumbai, and we were all dying to see india some more...so we got some train tickets (a mission in itself) to Jaipur, a journey that took us 20hrs..we stayed in 3 tier cabins, so there were 6 bunks in one compartment, we were slightly dubious at first as we were seemingly the only western girls there, with a whole load of indian men. but we got talking to some nice indian men and went to bed early listening to the delightful sound of them snoring! Upon our arrival in Jaipur i ... read more

HEY - really nice to keep hearing from everyone - keeps us going I think! Katie, the sick thing was being sick in the car - in bag - on phone. Glad to hear everyone is getting on ok. Been left by the taxi man today, i wasnt too good today either, so we didnt set foot from outside the hotel tday until about 12pm. Not quite as hot today, about 36 degrees? Still, the humidity and heat is mental. We had lunch in a nice place and have since been walking around jaipur to find an internet cafe, found one - taken a step back to the 1990's. Its the overnight train journey tonight, 12 hour long journey to the place where we can ride camels through the desert and sleep there just out on ... read more

We made it to Jaipur quite comfortably on the sleeper class train, we were a bit sketched out when we bought the ticket, but we ended up sitting beside a very nice Indian family and thier dad spoke quite good english and explained "the trains" to us. Their daughter in 6th grade was fun too, she had a good supply of treats and snacks. She could speak english, but was shy. She really liked western pop music on the iPOD but I made her ask to use it in english and that made her blush. Stepping off the train and the onslaught of rickshaw drivers offering to take you anywhere in the city (really they mean the hotel that gives them a nice, juicy commission) was a bit overwhelming. After being on the train for 19 ... read more

After a 'brief' overnight train from Jaisalmer ('brief' being just the 6 hours) I arrived in the city of Jodphur to the more familiar sights and sounds of incessant traffic, vehicle horns and the general hubbub which characterises most Indian cities. That said I think Jodhpur is about 20 times the size of Jai so it was probably to be expected. With an unusual lack of hassle I managed to get a rickshaw straight to my guesthouse of choice from the station at 6am. However I arrived to find that my room would not be ready for another 4 hours. So off I trudged up to the rooftop restaurant to hang about for a few hours. On the roof I was greeted by one of the most magnificent views that more than compensated for my temporary ... read more

Well after completing my brief stint in the Middle East I managed to hop on a swift 5 hour flight over the Arabic Peninsula where I landed safely in Mumbai (Bombay). The flight was at a horrible hour, I was exhausted and very behind on sleep having spent my last night in Egypt on a train. However, the flight attendants were all very nice and helped me construct a bed across the four seats in the middle aisle plus brought me three dinners. I woke up off the coast of India, and made my way through customs and immigration effortlessly. There was no useable ATM in the airport so I changed some money and hoped in a prepaid Taxi all the way to the other side of Bombay to the swank area of town where Jord ... read more
