After 5 days in Delhi (more on that later) I took the Shatabdi Express at 6.10am (yawn) to Jaipur this morning. I must say my train knocked spots of Virgin Trains. My last trip to Manchester a few weeks ago involved a train with no air conditioning, engineering works and a detour to Coventry. My train this morning was so well air conditioned I had to put my fleece on after 30 minutes, we had two flasks of piping hot chai (tea) brought round during the journey (ALMOST as nice as one of Mr Ledraw's early morning cuppas) and breakfast (two spicy potato cakes..not really an egg and bacon croissant from Pret but when in Rome...!). The train pulled in to Jaipur at 11.00am. Jaipur at first seems a very dusty and musty place. Hotter than ... read more

Namaste Everyone The train journey from Jodhpur to Jaipur was easy, comfortable and uncrowded until we arrived at Jaipur station, where the taxi and tuk tuk drivers were just far to intrusive and pushy. Thankfully our hotel had arranged transport, we willingly pay for this service as it means we don't have any hassles off the driver not being able to find the place or taking you to one of their choice for which they get commission and you pay extra!! It's peculiar that the drivers can be really pushy, the same person asking you at least 5 or 6 times where you are going, do you want a taxi do you want a hotel? But when you are really tired and answer the slightest bit brusquely, they take immediate umbrage and can get rude. The ... read more

Because the last time I got to the internet was the first time in a long while, I forgot to mention a lot of things, most of them having to do with bugs. First off, it's India, there are mosquitos. They itch. Aly needs to stop scratching her mosquito bites. I hope I don't get malaria, but this is one of those things you just have to deal with when the time comes. While in Jaisalmer, we had to deal with lots and lots of flies. These flies comes in hordes like no other, while you're eating, standing in a shop, walking on a street. There's no escaping them. The first night that it rained through our closed window despite the fact that it had rained so on me enough to wake me up and close ... read more

Leaving Jaipur today - catching the sleeper train to Udaipur, if the trains are still running - apparently, there's a lot of monsoon flooding in the area.... Loved Jaipur and it's nice to be here again - very busy and buzzing...especially at night, when everyone is out and there's industry and life and markets and traffic and cows roaming...... read more

Which is sad, because I actually thought it was a really pretty city, and if things had worked out differently concerning weather, I probably would have enjoyed my time there much more. Things as they are, I like it a lot more in retrospect now that I'm out of the city. Our second day in Jaisalmer we went to see a haveli, and shopping. There's a lot of good jewelry and and it was fun until it started to rain. There were torrential rains. At the beginning of the rain we wanted to keep going and not waste a day sitting inside. Aly found a carpet she eventually bought the next day. We went to a silver factory. On the way back from the silver factory, we got caught it what must have looked something like ... read more

Well, guys, tomorrow Brian and I get on a train at 7:05 p.m. to head to the Himalayas. I doubt that y'all care about the intimate details of our trip up north, but here you go anyway. Our train pulls out of the Jaipur station at 7:20 p.m on Saturday evening. We are travelling in non-A/C sleeper with a ticket booked all the way to Amritsar. If we arrive in Jalandhar City (about an hour and fifteen minutes south east of Amritsar) before 12:45 p.m. on Sunday, we will get off there, and catch a trian to Pathankot, the major transit hub into the Himalayas. That train is about three hours long, putting us into Pathankot at 3:23 p.m. From Pathankot there are buses every half hour or so to Dharmsala, which take about four hours, ... read more

After a long, exhausting and sweaty wait in Agra train station, which can best be described as a slum. We boarded our 3rd class AC carriage to Jaipur (5 hours away) we weren't expecting much but maybe not the hanging out the door or on the roof (local tickets) and were pleasantly surprised to find a carriage with AC so cold we had to put on sleeves and cover our legs and a sleeping bunk! Irish rail could learn a thing or two! Arriving into Jaipur at 11:30 we were a little concerned as we had nowhere booked to stay...we needn't have been. A fight nearly broke out on the platform between two auto rickshaw drivers, we eventually decided on Ali and were glad when the others skulked off. He brought us to Jaipur Inn which ... read more

Well, as I'm sure you all know by now, there's been a bombing on a train in Mumbai. Brian and I, of course, are quite safe and well. The good news is Mumbai is a good 18 hours by train from where Brian and I are and we have no intentions of going anywhere near Mumbai during our travels. It's kind of odd, but no one has mentioned the bombings here. It occurred about 16 hours ago, yet I had no idea until I got to work this morning. It just doesn't seem like anyone cares. After all, in the U.S. if there was a bomb attack that killed almost 200 people, we'd all be talking about it. India does have a much longer history of terrorist attacks on its soil, however, and I guess everyone's ... read more

The last few days have been really busy for Brian and I (and really expensive by Indian standards, but let's not talk about that). On the 4th we headed over to one of the AIESEC houses to watch the Germany-Italy semi-finals game with a bunch of Germans and Italians. It was quite an experience. Everyone was clapping and cheering and singing. We didn't stay until the end because there was thirty minutes of overtime, and it was already quite late, but it was a fun night. Then Thursday night we went out with Brian's graduate advisor from Penn, Rohin, whose family owns several diamond mines and is one of the most elite families in Jaipur. He took us to the Sheraton here for the best vegetarian food I've ever had. Then we went over to Steam, ... read more

I am at loss for words to describe Jaipur -- chaotic just doesn't do it justice. There is no place for the people pleasing here, the locals are in your face, money talks, everything else walks and a no means " maybe if you keep trying" The bicycle rickshaws should be an event on reality shows. Driving in a rickety cage pulled by an ageing driver who looks like he is on his last legs, dodging other rickshaws, bicycles, motorbikes, cars, trucks, donkey carts, cows, donkeys, dogs, camels and elephants!!!! ( i kid not ) and people is an experience to remember. Never mind olympic athletes --- these guys are fitter by far --- temperature 37 - 40 degrees, humidity ---- high !!! these guys pull three to four times their body weight for 12 - 16 hours straight. The only pleasant memory ... read more
