If there is a judge, you are it Wouldn't you know but James happened to find his precious elephant photos in the bottom of his suitcase. They weren't in his guidebook (that got left on the plane) after all And he got in trouble and got caught in judgment of that woman and wow....there was no problem! Sometimes James can be worse than a woman because he is so ready to make snap judgements of others. The drama at the end of the last entry may be ignored. It will remain posted with this site as it may be instructive.... read more

Happy Halloween, All. Oh and before I forget, I hear that a certain team won a certain World Series...I cant believe I missed this. I wasn't in Evanston to gloat in front of all those Cubs fans. But alas, sacrifices must be made. Anyway, Yay Sox. While you've all been cheering (or booing, depending on where your loyalties lie) the Sox, I've been keeping myself busy on my side of the world. Took a 2-day trip a couple weeks ago with some friends to the Taj Mahal, Fatepur Sikri (the ruins of a Mughal palace), and a world-famous bird sanctuary at Bharatpur. The Taj was just as white and beautiful as in postcards, which was a pleasant surprise. Tho as far as many of the Indian tourists were concern, my friends and I were the main ... read more

Happy belated Halloween to you all! ...and Happy Diwali too! I finished the last part of my Rajisthan tour with my fearless driver Santis-ji. I visited so many forts and castles and palace museums to last me a very long time. I am here in Jaipur to celebrate Diwali. Tomorrow is the big night as people wear new clothes and go out to shop for new things to start the new Hindu year...or something like that....it is the festival of light and it is really pretty amazing. People have lit these little candles in oil outside their homes and it is just so magical...all the sparkle. well it all ends when some four year old kid lights an Indian cheery bomb and throws it out in front of you! Talk about wake up call! ...and yeah...you ... read more

... read more

Second email: so...i think i wrote when i was in delhi, which feels like a really long time ago. delhi was great, except that jamie, the guy who i'm travelling with, got the well known 'delhi belly' and so our trip up to rishikesh up in the north was delayed! but that was ok, cause that meant an extra day in delhi, and we took a rickshaw (which are little motori(sz)ed vehicles that you find all over india) all over the city. we saw EVERYTHING - our driver was great at taking tourists around - we had no idea what we wanted to see but he showed us some great temples, India Gate, Old Delhi, and lots of interesting things in between! these rickshaws are amazing, in the congested streets of delhi, they zoom through tiny ... read more

This morning I woke up bright and early for a 7:00 AM yoga class on the roof of my school building, where I welcomed the sunrise with asanas and chanting. Then, at 8:30, I met with my Kathak guru, did a little puja over my new ankle bells, and got to dancing. Ahh, India. I accompanied my host family to 2 Jain temples today, the last day of a 10-day religious fast that has been going on since I arrived here. As the 5 of us piled into their little red hatchback, my hostfather, Mr. Patni, pointed to a small print hanging from the rear view mirror, featuring a sylized broze figure seated in the lotus position. "Annie!" Because Hindi speakers are accustomed to pronouncing every sound represented in a word, the Patnis interpret the silent ... read more

Hello again. I hope all is well and good in Chicago and elsewhere, and that you are all enjoying Fall. If anyone wants to do something wonderful for me, email me pictures of fall: the leaves, the colors, the people in sweaters. India is fabulous. It's beginning to cool off, which is really nice. The weather is usually in the 70's, which is perfect since we're always required to wear long pants and no sleeveless tops. I mostly wear a salwaar kameez, which consists of billowy cotton salwaar pants, a long kurta top, and a scarf called a dupatta. The're really quite attractive and comfortable. Also, they reduce the constant stares I get by about 10%, which is at least something. Yes, India is a country of starers. Especially when there's a foreigner milling about. I ... read more

The 7 hour bus ride from Agra (although we were told it was only 5 hours) was fantastic as I spent most of the time on the roof enjoying a wonderful breeze and fantastic views. The scenery changes dramatically as you leave Uttar Pradesh region and enter Rajasthan where the landscape becomes greener and peppered with small mountains. Rajasthan is the "Land of Kings" and Jaipur is its capital. Here I met up with many other travelers and took in information for many of my upcoming travels (SE Asia, Africa, etc.). The intense heat during the day made for some uncomfortable sightseeing, but I ventured out into the busy streets to take in the feel of the city. Late in the day we hired an autorickshaw for the 10km ride to Nahargarh, the "tiger" fort which ... read more
