Occupied by the UK in 1841, Hong Kong was formally ceded by China the following year; various adjacent lands were added later in the 19th century. Pursuant to an agreement signed by China and the UK on 19 December 1984, Hong Kong became the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on 1 July 1997. In this agreement, China has promised that, under its "one country, two systems" formula, China's socialist economic system will not be imposed on Hong Kong and that Hong Kong will enjoy a high degree of autonomy in all matters except foreign and defense affairs for the next 50 years. Life with Puma Asia » Hong Kong » Kowloon
The first day the former intern was there to show me everything; there was so much information to take in. The second day i was on my own, which was very confusing. Lukely Angie who is Christoph's assistant ( i am pretty much her assistant) is so helpful! I learned from day one that this internship was going to be a lot of work, but a great learning experience. I also learned that i would be working long hours...i wake up everyday at around 8am leave the apartment by 8:30 or 9. walk to the ferry pier where i take the [View Full Entry]

Our first trip out of China since moving here last August was to Hong Kong in September 22-23. Although it was a short and official trip, I was still excited because finally I can see Hong Kong outside of the airport! I had been to Hong Kong twice before but every time it was just to pass through for my onward journeys to other destinations. We went to Hong Kong by ferry from the Shunde port. The trip took 2 hours and I was surprised to find some familiar inscriptions on the glass window (see photo). There were no interesting sights [View Full Entry]

Wednesday at the Races During the cooler months in Hong Kong, the ones that dip below thirty degrees Celsius, horse racing is held. Because much of the local population are most certainly not wager-averse, as soon as the mercury drops below a level where horses are able to run, every Wednesday evening sees Happy Valley race course packed. For shear architectural volume, Happy Valley puts any racecourse I’ve been to before to absolute shame. I don’t claim to be a race-goer, but Happy Valley’s terraced stands, the kind I’ve seen only along the finishing straights of [View Full Entry]

Welcome to my travel blog! In this blog I intend to keep whom ever is interested up to date on my Hong Kong activities. Let the games begin... 6-7/10/09 (pasted from e-mail) Well I've arrived to the 'Paris Guesthouse' in one piece & what a journey it has been! If I'm honest I cant really remember most of it. Flight to Dubai was easy, comfortable & nice. Flight from Dubai was good, sat next to a couple from South Africa who come to HK often to buy precious stones for their jewelry business. They chatted lots & set me at ease. [View Full Entry]

It feels like ages since my last entry, and now I have so much to write I have to split it all into two to make it easier to read. One of the reasons why I’m not writing so much now is that I’m very much getting into a routine in Hong Kong, and although there is still loads for me to see and do, I’m not quite experiencing the same non-stop intake of new things that I had for the first few weeks. I’m becoming more used to the Hong Kong way of life now. I’m worried that when I [View Full Entry]

The first impression of Hong Kong is of concrete scraping the hazy sky and hazy revellers scraping the concrete pavements. Then you’re taken to the “other side” of the islands where you’re amazed that such exotic beachy alcoves exist in such close proximity to the vast arrays of neon sign topped towers. Then to add one more dimension you find out that on a hill top sits the biggest bronze Buddha on the planet, the third largest Buddha known to be in existence. The mind boggled. I had to confirm this with my own peepers and so began Tuesday, the day [View Full Entry]

And so it begins Asia » Hong Kong » Hong Kong Island
I find myself sitting on a roof terrace 6 stories up from the street. Looking around, I am by no means looking down on Hong Kong. I can count 4 buildings that are the same height or lower than my vantage point, and one of those is an old prison that has been derelict for what must be decades. Hong Kong is a city of sky scrapers. Many of the buildings will only have 4 apartments on each floor, making them very narrow compared to their height. Add to this the monsoon season, I can only imagine that this city, small [View Full Entry]

The Chinese National Holiday week found us flying off to Hong Kong for a few days. It is only a short flight away from here to Shenzhen, just over an hour, where we can catch a bus for the one hour or so ride across the Hong Kong border to the main part of the city. It is easier for a foreigner to travel to Hong Kong than a Chinese citizen! As soon as we crossed the bridge into Hong Kong, we could see a big difference in almost everything. People actually drove like they do in other parts of the [View Full Entry]

Hello my friends and family! So as of today, I have officially been in Hong Kong for one month. I think the first month in a new city is always the hardest. You have to adjust to the new lifestyle, you have to learn how to get around from place to place, you have to try and meet new people, and in my case, you have to find a job and an apartment asap. I kind of landed here without any idea of what to expect. I had no plan, no job, no friends and absolutely no clue what to do [View Full Entry]

After our good nights sleep (well for Kelly) we woke up in time to check out. Leanne rudely threw a book at Kelly to wake her :-) Considering the excessive weight of our bags, we thought the best idea of the day was to leave them at the hostel whilst we wondered off. So off we set! We walked further out towards Kowloon to go to a Jewellry Market, called the Jade Market. All the jewellry was made with the Jade stone. Leanne was excited, but kelly was worried it would be a huge mistake taking Leanne to a jewellry market [View Full Entry]
