There is no visiting Beijing without seeing the Great Wall of China. If I could run it, I would cover more ground. The search for the Great Wall run was on. Googled Great Wall marathon. Bam, perfect. As I looked further into it, this requires all participants to be on their 2-wk tour. Shacks. Going down the Google list, I ran into another one – Great Wall of China Marathon. Yet further research and contacting the organizers confirmed that GWCM had no tour requirement. What's more, the course was almost entirely on the wall whereas the other one runs, for the most part, through villages. Even more, this one took place in more scenic section of the Great Wall. Perfect, I'd be able to run it! Sightsee with water support, a brilliant idea! It would be ... read more

Mon: Shifting focus I woke up at 4am with excruciating hunger, grrrr!! A slice of bread eventually put me back to sleep. 7am alarm was rude. With the time change, it was still dark outside. Hunger (again, already!) and an image of roaring tourists at Sacre Coeur slowly pushed me out of the bed. All my joints were still sore. Finally managed to step out of the door at 8:30am. Via metro, I reached Montmartre Anvers station within 30min. Air was a tad chilly but clear. Looks like I just beat the tour groups, good job . Not much souvenir pressers yet either. Sacre Coeur was as beautiful as I expected. Serene, looking down into the hustle bustle of la Seine riversides. Place de Tertre was supposed to be the tourist mecca at ... read more

Just one week after our successful run at Matagalls Montserrat in Sept 2011, Bertrand threw an idea of Eco-trail de Paris 80k. The race high is always followed by the low point. It’s like losing purpose. It comes just about one week following the event. The harder the event, the lower the low point, the most dangerous and vulnerable time to sign up for the next adventure. The idea of finishing at glowing Eiffel tower captivated me. And all that baked goods I'd eat afterwards?? The thought of regret outweighed the work. It was going to be a completely different game from Mm with time limit cut in half. What the heck, I’ll figure out the running part after registration and airplane ticket. Despite my motto of “no cold, no injury”... read more

Mon: Barclona núnca me cansa A new day after the trek! I couldn't sleep well for my internal body feeling weird, a 16hr walk artifact . All throughout the night, I heard firecrackers and cheers that reminded me of correfoc. But La Mercé was going to be next weekend, hmm. We were meeting the landlord at noon. By 10:30, we were all packed and ready for a coffee. We ended up at Santa Catalina. I'm glad we made it there - it's like my ritual - cafe con leche and cookie assortments. Slowly walked down the stairs 5 floors with the luggage. Oof, that was so uncalled for. We stopped for tapas before we went our own ways. Pan con tomate was a pity but love tapas! With that, Bertrand and I parted. I went to ... read more

The day before: How quickly I forget - length, difficulty, the pain. Here I was again, on the way to airport for Mm11! Matagalls Montserrat, a 52-mile route from Coll Formic on Montseny mountain outside of Barcelona to the monastery of Montserrat. Cumulative incline, ~20,000ft. Last year was my first attempt. Finished at 17hrs with the last 5hrs of pure pain. This year's goal - to finish without 5hrs of that pain. When Raúl told me that the registration opened, I had no hesitation - sign me up please!!! This year, the rule changed from first-come first-serve to giving priority to those who have completed before. I was so glad I did it last year. Raúl and I were two of 1800 ppl who pre-registered. 1200 spots were open for lottery. Of >2200 ppl who entered, ... read more

Fri - Endless sight of good & bad but not ugly: The train from Vienna arrived at Prague station at 1:20p. My luggage has grown more than I thought but gotta keep going. Carried all my stuff and made it to the hostel walking, good job! Got my logistics done - check-in and ATM - started my visit by 2:30. I got off the tram in front of the Municipal hall totally disoriented. After the usual struggle, I made it to the old town square - O M G!!! My jaws dropped for the 360 degree view and the number of tourists, unreal. Rows of colorful pretty facades and handsome towers filled the panoramic view. On the ground were tourists after tourists. Naturally, touristy sausage/meat BBQ with medieval-costumed vendors were set up in the square. Also ... read more

Mon - 7 solid hrs on foot: Pastel yellow stations and digital info board disappeared from the platforms. Instead stood rusty and airly stations. The train crossed Austria-Hungary border 1hr from Vienna. Right on schedule. The train arrived at Budapest Keleti station at 1p. It was a smooth ride. Finding Anna was smooth too, thanks to her detailed instruction. After dropping off my backpack at an apartment, Anna took me for lunch close by for typical Hungarian fair - paprika chicken rice and paprika sausage potato couscous-like grain. Lots of paprika for a great start! She ordered them with this fermented cucumber that tastes like pickles but they were not pickled. It's like cured with bread or yeast - interesting. The dishes were ginormous and the restaurant kept the leftover for us during our excursion - ... read more

Day 0 - 24hrs later: Phew, finally sitting on the ground. 4:30pm in Vienna. That makes it 7:30am PST. I was at SFO just about this time yesterday. A flight through JFK reached Budapest at 11am. A convenient 30min ride took me to Keleti station at 12:30. So far so good. I just knew that the train to Vienna was going to leave at ~3pm. I was gonna get the ticket squared out and wonder around but I saw nothing of a ticket booth. Wrong entrance? When I approached the gate anyway, I found out that the train to Vienna was about to leave...what?! So here I was in Vienna, 2hrs early and a whole 24hrs of non-stop traveling. A little jog sounds really good now. While I wait for Christine, I hit a cafe where ... read more

Reward #1 - Toast with cava!: After one full easy day, I was able to walk faster and pain was less going up the stairs. I wasn’t gonna sit around anyway. I’ve never seen the cava country mentioned in any guide book of Barcelona but it sounded like an awesome idea . Sant Sadurni d’Anoia is ~1hr train ride west of Barcelona. The day started out early but not smooth . It's just that nobody was going that far out of the city and people had no idea where this place was. First I took the wrong train cuz I couldn’t remember the name of the final stop. I got on and after I asked the ladies around me, it became a discussion of the isle. Somebody finally knew how to get there, phew. People went ... read more

For lack of sleep for the past 3days, I slept through the entire plane ride. Still I managed to be sleepy Friday afternoon, as if my body knew what was coming. Friday was thunder storm in Barcelona and besides, I didn't wanna kill my legs just yet. Tomorrow will be the toughest physical challenge of my life, Matagalls Montserrat, the total distance of 84km with the cumulative ascent of 6000m non-competitive endurance race. Time limit is 24hrs. Since I made that to be the goal of 2010, I've been working to strengthen my legs. But I had no idea how it would be to walk that much distance and elevation through the night. The shuttle buses left Joanic station between 1 & 2pm. 1.5hr ride through the windy road took us to the starting pt at ... read more
