Occupied by the UK in 1841, Hong Kong was formally ceded by China the following year; various adjacent lands were added later in the 19th century. Pursuant to an agreement signed by China and the UK on 19 December 1984, Hong Kong became the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on 1 July 1997. In this agreement, China has promised that, under its "one country, two systems" formula, China's socialist economic system will not be imposed on Hong Kong and that Hong Kong will enjoy a high degree of autonomy in all matters except foreign and defense affairs for the next 50 years. Dear Fiends and Family I must have taken over 500 photos of Angkor Wat so hopefully you get to see some of the best attached. I managed 3 days at the temples including multiple sunrises and sunsets. The best part of the trip so far. SOme of the time, there was not a single person around. I could explore most of the site with only jungle noises to disturb the peace (and Dad, of course). Some of the photos included show the main temple at Angkor Wat (most well known), the Banyon (with dozens of huge faces looking down at you) [View Full Entry]

I had wanted to spend my last day in HK checking out the great buddha on Lantau Island. I just had to figure out the best (and cheapest) way to get there. While feasting on a delicious BBQ Pork roll, I decided to take the MTR to Tung Chung and get the no 23 bus to the monastery. People who think that there is nothing to see in HK haven't really taken the oppurtunity to visit the lesser known parts. Lantau Island is beautiful. The bus that took us up to the monastery passed sandy deserted beaches, great hiking spots, and [View Full Entry]

Okay, so I may not be actually writing this entry while IN Hong Kong, but I felt it appropriate to give it that location regardless. First of all, can I just point out how crazy it is to be able to say "Oh, I went to HK for the night"? Wow. Let's back up a little bit. So, on Friday we of course taught (well, Martin did) and then got driven down to Futian for Chinese class around 1:30. There are 3 sections of Chinese Level 1 and you got placed depending on how well you did in the class in [View Full Entry]

Excitement builds....
The non stop lifestyle I’ve lived since arrival doesn’t show any immediate signs of slowing. I can barely remember everything that I’ve been up to since my last entry. I did make my trip into Mong Kok for my haircut as planned and it all went okay. What’s the worst that can happen when all you want is for it to be cut short? Thankfully nobody threw acid off the roof into the crowds below on this occasion, indeed I think cases of this have dried up which is a relief for everyone. I also had the chance to buy a [View Full Entry]

I was so excited to be leaving China and heading to Hong Kong especially for my birthday celebrations. We had to go through customs before we could get on the train meaning we technically left China 20 hours before we got to Hong Kong and there was no getting off at any of the stations en route. I got settled into my bunk only to be dragged out of it 10 minutes later by a snotty Chinese cow that was screaming at me! She was pushing me and really letting rip basically saying I was in her bunk. As far I [View Full Entry]

The better of the 20 shots taken
The same day after returning from Macau (and hosing myself down) I decided that if I'm going to be able to check out Victoria Peak, I had better do it now. There was a thunderstorm that evening, and after it cleared up, I headed out with tripod and camera in hand to take award winning (heh heh) shots of the city while on the peak. Even though it had rained heavily and it was past 9pm, intense humidity still hung in the air. The ground was still wet, but at least it had cleared up enough that I could still get [View Full Entry]

No view of a new city would be complete without me
I will maintain I am in a new country though I really don't know what Hong Kong is classified as anymore. I think I am in a new country because I went through arrival forms and swine flu test centre again. China I am pretty sure is claiming it as China but the residents still seem to see themselves as set apart. My first day and night in Hong Kong were also the last ones of the tour. I was kinda of sad to think we were all going off our different ways but I don't think any of us dwelt [View Full Entry]

visa run Asia » Hong Kong
We’re almost fully emigrated! All the paperwork is done and we have a clean bill of health from the authorities! I was not looking forward to the medical - required for the work visa, but it was ok, even a bit amusing. We were given heated toweling dressing gowns to wear and then were directed into a series of rooms to have various tests including an ECG, ultrasound, blood test. Thankfully, they did the blood test first. Needles - not my favourite thing, but I didn’t feel anything. The worst bit was the eye test as the doctor was so grumpy [View Full Entry]

After crashing the night before, I decided to do a more in-depth tour of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. I really wanted to check out the Temple Street Night Market. You know, I was warned by a co-worker that Hong Kong would still be humid, but my God! Within an hour of leaving my room, I was practically coated in sweat; my shirt was soaking wet and I smelt like I had been working in the fields for 5 straight days without taking a bath. I spent two hours sightseeing before I had to hightail it back to my room for [View Full Entry]

China Update Asia » Hong Kong
OK, for all of you who don't know yet... I quit my job in China. Yep. Big news. It was just not working out the way I thought it would. Living in Shenzhen was definitely a great experience. The food, the cheap rent, the cheap EVERYTHING actually, my adorable little students.... but that's about it. The city itself lacked a lot of culture and life, which is what I wanted most. Granted, Shenzhen is a brand new, 25 year old city, with absolutely no history. Just a melting pot of people from all over China who were sick of picking rice [View Full Entry]
