Lantau Island, the largest of Hong Kong's islands features Ngong Ping cultural themed village, 34 mts tall Tian Tan buddha statue also known as Big Budda, the Po Lin Monastery and its vegetarian restaurant, souvenirs shops and cafes. I highly recommend to leave early for Lantau so as to avoid queues . We made a mistake by not booking tickets in advance and so we had to queue up to buy tickets and THEN again wait in line to board cable car. Online booking can be a smart option There are 3 cabins av.aliable(standard and cristal bottom cabins and private cabins). Max. 8 people can accommodate in 1 cabin. We chose single ride standard cabin and descended by bus. Even though we visited on a weekday it almost took 2 hrs in queue, but once got ... read more

We were able to have a lie-in in the Regal Hotel at Hong Kong airport because the flight wasn’t until 16:40. However, as we hadn’t been given new e-tickets and we were so skeptical about having a seat on the plane we were determined to check in when the El Al desk opened. Breakfast in the Regal was surreal. There was half a plane load of Israelis including the crew in the restaurant - we could have been in Tel Aviv. There wasn’t too much to do as we didn’t want to go into Hong Kong for shopping so we sat in the hotel lounge trying to concentrate on the blog. We had a quick lunch and rushed back across to the airport. We had our seats as promised so we went through check-in, passport control ... read more

Before heading into China we had a few days in Hong Kong. Stepping off the plane into the humidity was a nice first step after the cold Japanese winter. The drive from the airport to Hong Kong Island was past strings of islands and over several bridges, with a frenzy of activity in the surrounding waters - huge cargo terminals supplying massive tankers with hundreds of containers, and speedboats trying to avoid the behemoths. Our AirBnb was in Central, a tiny apartment typical of Hong Kong (one of the most densely populated places in the world) - a room the size of the bed with a minuscule bathroom attached, so small I couldn't even sit on the toilet straight! My first impression of Hong Kong was of how international it is. Full of young expats dressed ... read more

Hi All Before it was time to go back to work we went down to Hong Kong for a few days of warm weather, shopping and an evenings racing at Happy Valley racetrack. Happy Valley was built by the British on the only piece of land on the island that is flat. The locals originally had paddy fields here to grow rice. The British banned the locals from growing rice, drained the paddies and set up the racetrack. Happy Valley is very modern with many restaurants and restaurants. Racing takes place on a Wednesday evening under floodlights which makes for a great spectacle. Enjoy the photos JAH BLESS ... read more

The atmosphere of big cities can’t be beaten at new year, and in Hong Kong they do the whole big fireworks and light show thing so we’d deliberately planned to be there to see in 2019. Our flight was on time and unlike on our way out to Manila there was hardly any queue for immigration. We got our bags and having picked up tourist tickets for the MTR on our way out we were quickly heading into the city. The MTR app told us the fastest way to our accommodation so at the first stop we joined the regular line and left our comfy seats on the airport line behind. Mirador Mansion, the building our guesthouse was in, was easy to find. Getting to the 5th floor was easy. Then we wandered round in circles ... read more

We left Kathmandu on a Cathay Dragon flight at 11.30 pm. The flight was only 4 hours-ish long but Hong Kong is 2h 15m ahead of Nepal so day was breaking by the time we landed. Customs and Immigration were straightforward and we exited into a huge modern airport with all the bells and whistles including a shower room. Unfortunately, that was where everything stopped. The signage for the hotel shuttle bus that our research had indicated would get us into the city was either unclear or non-existent and, after some time wandering around, Steve decided it would be better just to 'park' me somewhere with our luggage until he could clarify where to go. At least, that was his explanation and I'm sure it had nothing to do with the fact that She Who Can't ... read more

Got a taste for how the ‘other half’ travel, and . . . Shit! It’s hard to go back! . . . .We had the good fortune to each acquire a pair of Qantas Club admissions as part of a new credit card package we top on earlier this year. This allowed us to cash in on the deal at both ends of our Hong Kong venture. On heading out of Melbourne, we had been re-allocated, on the eve of departure, to a direct flight to Hong Kong rather than through Sydney. Our flight was leaving at 08:30am on Mon 24/Sep/18, so with all the pre-flight kerfuffle that takes place we were at Tulla by about 06:30am. Earlier online check-in streamlined it that little bit more. All the better to maximise the Qantas Club experience. I ... read more

Arrival in Hong Kong by boat is quite a spectacular sight. What an amazing introduction to this unbelievable city. As soon as our ship was cleared by customs at 7pm we headed out on the subway to one of our most anticipated stops. The highest bar in the world, called Ozone, located on the 118th floor of the Ritz Carleton hotel. We arrived to delicious (but pricey) cocktails. While enjoying our first drink we were given two drink tickets from guests of The Ritz Carleton who couldn’t use them. We decided to give the drink tickets a try and when Chris got to the bar the bartender took them, poured one drink and while he was making the other he gave Chris a sheet where he was asked to indicate his guest information. Chris is horrible ... read more
