Occupied by the UK in 1841, Hong Kong was formally ceded by China the following year; various adjacent lands were added later in the 19th century. Pursuant to an agreement signed by China and the UK on 19 December 1984, Hong Kong became the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on 1 July 1997. In this agreement, China has promised that, under its "one country, two systems" formula, China's socialist economic system will not be imposed on Hong Kong and that Hong Kong will enjoy a high degree of autonomy in all matters except foreign and defense affairs for the next 50 years. We arrived at Hong Kong after our 3rd sleeper train. It took 20 hours! We got the metro to our hostel which was at a place called Chunking Mansions. First impressions....not great. It is a huge building full of hostels/flats and shops on the bottom floor selling crap/phone cards/ sim cards / rude stuff etc. There are loads of immigrants standing outside and hassle you for fake watches/bags and tailored suits every time you walk in and out. Once you get used to it, its ok. Our room was nice anyway, although very small, it was upgraded so we had a [View Full Entry]

21 OCTOBER 2009 Arrive Shenzhen! We had to catch our last public bus in China to reach the railway station where border crossing is and guess what ... how is this for our last experience in China; the bus driver tried to charge us double for the room which our backpacks took up, even though we were wearing them and even though bus was empty! Does that not just totally summarise it?! So in a final stand of defiance I did as the Chinese do ... pretended didn't have a clue what he was talking about even though it was blatantly [View Full Entry]

I’m not too sure how 4 days of traveling can feel like months but when 12pm rolled around and I was due to get in a taxi and then onto a shuttle bus to the airport to catch my flight from Xian to Gaungzhou my mood was akin to that of a traveler who has hit the six month mark on a round the world trip. I hadn’t realised just how much personality was lacking till I had a rather annoying taxi catching episode on rout to the airport shuttle bus. I was assured by the lady at the front desk [View Full Entry]

Hi Everyone! I have finally left India behind and am in my last stop on my world tour! Hong Kong! I have actually been to Hong Kong before, about 4 years ago when my best friend studied abroad here for a semester. I saved for three months on ramen noodles to afford a 900 dollar ticket, and because I had just started full time at Wal-mart I didn't have any vacation time so I could only afford to take 6 days, 2 of which were used up on the flights. That left me only 4 days here. My friend picked me [View Full Entry]

Hey! Here's my first blog entry, hopefully I will manage to keep it quite short! I met about half the group at the traveloge at Heathrow on Wednesday night and everyone seems really cool and friendly so that sort of calmed the nerves before heading off. The flight to Hong Kong was good, didn't seem to long and I managed to watch loads of films. Only thing was my feet ended up a bit swollen and i had cankles all over for the day - boo! Looking a bit better now, thank goodness! We've been in Hong Kong for just over [View Full Entry]

Last night was my first solo night out of my travels, and maybe ever actually. It is a strange thing going out alone, I'm not sure if I have done it before, in England or anywhere. But last night I did. After speak to my dad, he suggested I start in Wan Chai, find some bars there and see what happens. So, I shaved, showerd and put on my going out clobber. Upon arrival at Wan Chai MTR station I had it in my head I needed exit F - probably confusing it with Causeway Bay exit for the Indonesian Consulate [View Full Entry]

Today has been largely uneventful, my sleeping pattern has become rather odd. The day I arrived, hadn't slept much before so had a long nap in the afternoon, yesterday I awoke at 06:53 and after a busy morning, I again had a long nap in the afternoon. This morning I woke up, looked at my phone and it was once again 06:53... groundhog day! ha! "and don't forget your booties - cause its cold outside!" well... its not cold, but I don't like being up at that time. In an attempt to change this pattern I needed to make sure I [View Full Entry]

Fourteen hours after leaving the fall chill of Vancouver I emerged into the warm evening air of Hong Kong. Best of all, my son, Jon was waiting for me. My first day and a half in Asia was spent catching up on sleep and getting oriented. This was a short stop over on the way to mainland China. I will be back for a week at Christmas and will write about this amazing metropolis then! Next stop, Beiging China on the very early morning Dragonair flight. [View Full Entry]
