Occupied by the UK in 1841, Hong Kong was formally ceded by China the following year; various adjacent lands were added later in the 19th century. Pursuant to an agreement signed by China and the UK on 19 December 1984, Hong Kong became the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on 1 July 1997. In this agreement, China has promised that, under its "one country, two systems" formula, China's socialist economic system will not be imposed on Hong Kong and that Hong Kong will enjoy a high degree of autonomy in all matters except foreign and defense affairs for the next 50 years. The flight left Auckland at midnight - despite protestations about the number of films they were going to watch, Michael and Peter were asleep within 10 mins of takeoff! I was woken briefly by a flight attendant to ask if I wanted beef or chicken at 12.45am! Who would want to eat then? I think we all slept/dozed for the first 8 hours of the 10 hour flight - so by the time we'd had breakfast it was just about time to land. At some point I realised that we had made the mistake of leaving all the fleeces behind the [View Full Entry]

The Star Ferry to Central

Hi everyone, This vacation continues to bring surprises around every corner. After New Years, Sheena and I took a day to go over to the Kowloon side of Hong Kong to tour around. We took the old Star Ferry across the channel for $2.20 HK, which amounts to about 34 cents Canadian. The subway system here is just as cheap. Anyways, the bay area on the Kowloon side is really nice - it's where the Hong Kong equivalent of the Hollywood walk of fame is and we saw Jackie Chan's star amongst others. From there we walked up to Tsim Sha [View Full Entry]

Our afternoon at Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum within the Victoria Peak Tram Complex deserves this separate blog. Meeting over 100 stars, in wax than live, is just over the top. Just a short ferry ride from Kowloon side, a short ride on Bus No. 15, and we were finally at the Peak Tram Terminus. A long line snaked through the street around the Terminus. We skipped the line and instead bought the combination ticket for the tram ride to the top, Sky Terraces and Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum. While waiting, we browsed through the gallery of old newspaper articles, photos and [View Full Entry]

And so after many a trial the two intrepid (!) explorers arrived in hongkers. The first day (Monday) they arrived in the evening so we did not very much but the following afternoon after a lovely long jet-lagged lie-in we began chopping ingredients for that nights spring roll party. We are now definite experts at spring roll rolling :) lots of my sister's loud friends came and we chatted well into the evening aided and abetted by alcohol :) Wednesday was New Years and we were having a sort of multi-generational gathering at the club house near my place. along wit [View Full Entry]

Disneyland spells M A G I C. Yes, Virginia, Disneyland is magical for people of all ages. Two years in a row, and we still manage to have fun and feel the magic of Hongkong Disneyland. To prep for a 12 hour Disney adventure, we made sure the kids slept well and had a hearty breakfast to start the day right. Naturally, we went to their choice eating place....... McDonald's. Good thing there was one just a block off our hotel. Unlike yesterday, I had a full breakfast rather than settle for just my usual cup of coffee. In fact, everyone [View Full Entry]

Hola, we've left the winter behind! 2 days ago we were skating across a frozen lake in Beijing. Yesterday afternoon we boarded the train in Beijing and entered our very cool, private train car It had 2 bunk beds, an arm chair, a table, very large picture window, and a private bathroom with a western style toilet Up until this point every train we had been on in China had an eastern style toilet, one to be shared by about 40 people....if you haven't been to Asia and are unsure what an eastern style toilet is; I won't get into specifics [View Full Entry]

Hello Family and Friends! Let's just skip all the "Sorry I haven't been on in a while"-"Remember me?"-"I promise to write more" bullshit and carry straight to the good stuff you've been waiting for. So, what have I done since my last post? Well, Christmas holidays!!! I hope you've all eaten to your hearts content and were able to spend the precious time with family and friends, merrily listening to carols, sitting by the fire roasting chestnuts, took the time to do some skating or played ice hockey, baking baked goods, and enjoying the smell of fresh pine. What can I [View Full Entry]

Dining in Hongkong never fails. And speaking of culinary adventures, 2 Hongkong favorites easily come to mind. I had my fingers and toes crossed that a reservation can be made in either one of the 2 for our New Year's Eve dinner. It was just our luck that a table for 9 pax is available at the Jade Garden Restaurant on the 4th floor of the Star House in Salisbury Road, where diners can enjoy good food as well as a good view of the Victorian Harbour. Our table may not offer the best views, but we had a delightful dinner [View Full Entry]

Do you know that drinking game called "Never Have I Ever" in which someone begins by saying something like, "Never have I ever eaten raw squid" and everyone who HAS done that takes a drink? Well, now Daniel and I have the distinct privilege of taking a drink next time someone says, "Never have I ever been deported from the communist People's Republic of China". Yes, that's right, folks. Dan and I had the delightful experience of deportation, which I highly suggest you try, if you have not already done so. It's fabulous. But first, I'll back up. New Year's Eve [View Full Entry]
