Occupied by the UK in 1841, Hong Kong was formally ceded by China the following year; various adjacent lands were added later in the 19th century. Pursuant to an agreement signed by China and the UK on 19 December 1984, Hong Kong became the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on 1 July 1997. In this agreement, China has promised that, under its "one country, two systems" formula, China's socialist economic system will not be imposed on Hong Kong and that Hong Kong will enjoy a high degree of autonomy in all matters except foreign and defense affairs for the next 50 years. Bored in Hong Kong! Asia » Hong Kong » Kowloon
Our friends from Australia, Alex and Polly, are on a 2-week holiday in their native country (Hong Kong) and we came to meet with them. Hubby and I took the 3PM ferry boat to Hong Kong on Saturday and we arrived there at past 5PM. As previously arranged, Alex and Polly were already there to meet us in the terminal. Polly suggested we eat some snacks first in the food court because both of them had an early lunch and they had already walked from Mong Kok to Tsim Sha Tsui since 2:30PM (if you can look at a map of [View Full Entry]

Ming and I went to Hong Kong this weekend and can I just say this right off the bat….Hong Kong is NOT China! Technically, it is….but given that it is actually a part of the same place I have been for the past 16 days, Hong Kong is like the free spirited, creative, rebellious, out-spoken, red-headed step child that the rest of the family tries to ignore. I had access to Facebook (which I am surprised to say I miss very much) and I was able to download some TV shows and even one movie to take back to Guangzhou with [View Full Entry]

Hong Kong - day 2 Asia » Hong Kong » Kowloon
Maurs and I went for a walk thru Kowloon Park which is the local public park in the city. It’s a bit up and down and not much grass is about but instead there are lots of native trees and walkways and people. There was the usual aviary of parrots including some Aust Palm Cockatoos and Galahs but the best part was the lagoon or pond. In there were small tortoises, some were just lined up on logs to get some sun whilst others swam, all sorts of fish, water birds and wait for it - Flamingoes and lots of them. [View Full Entry]

Hello there on this sunny but hazy morning from Kowloon one of three areas of the Autonomous state of HK. we arrived on Thursday evening after what seemed a rather long and challenging day! HK's new airport is ginormous, it took us 45 minutes to walk from where we arrived to immigration control , admittedly at Al's snails pace but nevertheless a long way. Al being Al and the honest man he is , filled in the compulsory health questionnaire by ticking one of the boxes and so they whipped him off for a health check for swine flu that added [View Full Entry]

Arrive in Hong Kong Asia » Hong Kong » Kowloon
We all got up early at 8.00am to go to the bow on the front deck to watch the boat entering Victoria harbour Hong Kong. It’s pretty amazing - the harbour is probably a smaller version of Sydney Harbour but here the surrounding mountains are closer and off course the high rise apartment buildings are as thick as anything on every side - I’ve never seen anything like it before. This day became our port day in lieu of the trip being cut short by not visiting Taiwan. We walked around Kowloon which is where the ship berthed, walked up to [View Full Entry]

Well chapter two begins on the wednesday morning waking up in a bed far too small for one person let alone sharing it with the monster that is barry mcg. I horrible moment of realiastion that not only did it feel like my back ws broken but it also felt like i had slept fo roughly about 2 minutes all night. Anyways the groupe regrouped to discuss the antics and experience of the night before - this included an irish bar in which the majority of the guys ended up, chatting up some german girl, running to the safety of taxis [View Full Entry]

We were planning on skipping our Chinese class on Friday to get a head start to Hong Kong, but were informed last week that our first exam would be postponed, and rescheduled for that same Friday. Plans change, we're used to it, or at least unfazed by it! After taking the exam, and finishing class off by learning how to say certain body parts (Head, shoulders, knees, and toes, knees and toes!), we were off to the metro, taking a subway to the border crossing. No problems getting into Hong Kong, and figuring out the transfer stops along the way. It [View Full Entry]

The “passenger no entry” sign on the top of Moon Hill was like a red flag to a bull as we realised that we could climb all the way to the top of the “moon”. The lack of established path meant there were points on the climb we were left doubting our decision, especially Zoe whose flip flops made the ascent even more of a challenge! The 360 degree view from the top was worth it. Yangshuo’s natural beauty means that both the locals and tourists flock there to relax - including newlyweds in search of the ultimate wedding snap (see [View Full Entry]

Continuing on our tour of the megacities of Asia we pulled into Shanghai on a cloudy Sunday morning. This city, which boasts a population of 20 million, is in the throes of a massive makeover like Beijing just did. Shanghai will be hosting the 2010 World Expo beginning in May next year. The entire Bund area is being renovated along with the cruise port. Five subway lines are being added and a whole new Expo city is being created. The local government expects 70 million visitors during the six month Expo. I can hardly imagine that as the street and sidewalks [View Full Entry]

So this is the long awaited first blog of my 6 month travels. Despite the fact I have already been away nearly a month I have decided to back track and test my memory to see what I can remember. We are arrived in Hong Kong tired, smelly but in good spirits and were ready to get our travels underway. Sadly British Airways had other ideas and despite the fact that we arrived safely...my rucksack didn't! Ok, ok....breathe....it's absolutely fine...I'm sure BA know where your bag is at least?! Nope! Basically not a clue. The lovely guys at the HK baggage [View Full Entry]
