We woke up around 5:20am and while we waited we were disgusted by the people spitting and making gross sounds...it's really different from Ottawa that's for sure. We were also amused by a guy who had a laugh like Beavis from Beavis and Butthead...we couldn't help but laugh! We arrived at 7:30am and were greeted by two guys from the school who then brought us to breakfast...I didn't each much again because I'm not used to "lunch/dinner" food in the morning. The ride to our apartment was long and boring. The area isn't what we expected it to look like at all. We were actually a little disappointed in it to be quite honest...along with our apartment which is quite dirty. We did cry a bit because its scary to be somewhere where you don't really ... read more

We woke up rather early since we went to bed around 7pm, we went for breakfast in the hotel and it's not typical breakfast food that we're used it's almost like lunch. It was rather good but we didn't fill up too much, our bodies are still getting used to the time and the new surroundings. Around noon we got picked up and brought over to the office of the guy who set us up with the school in Jiangsu. We got to meet 2 other English teachers who were really nice. We then got to go to the Silk Market which is a big store with pretty much everything you can think of there...it's crazy busy there and they're all trying to get you to buy from their place. I got suckered into buying a ... read more

Saturday: Didn't do much today, just took it easy. Rented some movies and just relaxed :) Sunday: We had the boy come over again (Erik) and his grandparents brought us a Christmas tree and some Beijing duck...it was a really nice gesture :) Now we have a tree, but it still doesn't feel like Christmas is in 2 days. It's going to be a hard Christmas this year, but next year we'll be back with our family. And I think it will make our time together more special.... read more

After Ben's class, we went with Mr. Yang into the major part of Xinghua. We got our visas done, money exchanged, some phone cards to call family and for lunch...Ben and I went to KFC and I got a Mexican twister basically ranch sauce with salsa with lettuce and tomato, chicken and a tortilla wrap! I got a side of mashed potatoes and those were pretty good too! Mmmm!!! I had 3 classes in a row...my 2nd class was super sweet. I didn't get to meet them 2 weeks ago because that was the day we didn't go in because of breach of contract. So, they asked me a bunch of questions and they said I'm like a superstar to them and it was really sweet. One girl gave me a card that says "Happy Everyday" ... read more

Saturday: We got invited over for lunch across the street. The family wants us to tutor their 9 yr old son every weekend (Sundays) to improve his English. They cooked a large meal (like most traditional Chinese meals) with some different types of food. Some were good, most were really bad. Especially "river crab"...tastes NOTHING like ocean crab...yuck. I tried most things, and they kept bothering me to try more. I can only push my limits so far without throwing up on the table. They were really nice, but I hate when people force feed me, especially when I've been feeling sick lately. Sunday: The boy (who we named "Erik" for his English name) came over for an hour. We showed him pictures of Canada and food, and pictures of animals. Found out today that I ... read more

Today is a short day since it's their weekend off...so classes end at 11:30. It's complete mayhem outside after because all their parents are picking them up to take them home (it's a boarding school, so most of the students live on campus). A homeless woman begged for money right outside the school and hit me with her cup when we walked past her. The night before leaving KFC a homeless man wouldn't let me shut the taxi door. They're crazy here, most homeless people in Canada aren't as aggressive! This afternoon was one of Ben's students ("Jay") birthday...so he invited us to go to KTV which is a karaoke place. It's pretty neat...private rooms with a big leather couch, karaoke selection thing and tv. We sang a few English songs and the guys sang some ... read more

Monday: I felt super sick when I woke up, I had no voice...so I wasn't able to go into work since I'm pretty useless as an English teacher with no voice. I stayed home and rested. The girls stopped by at lunch and asked me a bunch of questions about Canada again (which was hard to do w/ my voice being gone pretty much) and they offered to bring us shopping on Friday since we get paid. We'll probably treat them to dinner as well. I hope to get a warmer sweater at least and maybe new sunglasses. Tuesday: I felt even worse, but I at least had my voice pretty much back. Still have a hard time talking loudly in class with my sore throat though. Classes went alright, I showed them pictures of Canada ... read more

We went back to work Thursday because things got resolved which made us happy...that's all we wanted and we don't think it was asking for very much at all, just what we're supposed to have in the contract. My first 3 classes went really well, I even was given some pictures from 2 of my students! They still ask me for my autograph which is really cute. As for my last class, they didn't talk at all. I usually get them to introduce themselves one at a time from their desks (name, age, favourite subjects, hobbies, family & pets) but none of them wanted to talk! So, they just wrote out all their answers and I went around and read them all. They finally started to talk a bit when we went through the book, but ... read more

We ended up not going to work today since no one seems to care about the contract so until we are treated like professionals we will go back to work. We’re just going by the contract so we’re not doing anything wrong. We went to the internet café (gross!) and sent Steven (coordinator) an e-mail saying we’re very dissatisfied with this school and the way we’re being dealt with here. I don’t know what will come of this but I sure hope it gets better. I’ve been saying this for almost a month now. Mr. Yong finally came by with a computer teacher and fixed our computer…only after a week of waiting! He also gave us the key for the other apartment so we can grab the VCD player so we can start renting movies to ... read more

Classes went okay I guess, class 8 went better than class 18. I can really see the difference in between the grade 7’s and the grade 8’s language wise. I think I’m going to have a very difficult time with this grade. We both finished at lunch and got some food from that place near our apartment and when we got in the two girls we met Friday knocked on our door…they had brought us some bananas and kiwi! It was really sweet of them to think of us like that. Ben went to the internet café and locked the door when he left. I went to leave for class and couldn’t open the door. When you lock the door from the outside you can’t unlock from the inside and vice versa….crazy! So…I had to call ... read more
