Went to an internet café down the street today. Very gross environment…smokers…people spitting on the ground…yuck! Rained for the first time since we’ve gotten here…very cold and wet rain. We made our own dinner tonight since we been eating “take out” a lot lately. We found a really good place 2 minuets away from our apartment that has rice or noodles (your choice) with veggies for really cheap, very delicious as well. Went to bed early, had early classes Monday morning.... read more

Only had one class today (8am-8:40am) the other class scheduled was canceled due to some teachers from all over Jiangsu province coming to visit the school. Ben only had one class as well, but later in the morning. On his way home he picked up a fruit kabob that they sell outside of the school at lunch time…wasn’t too bad. Mr. Yang (English teacher that has been in charge of us) invited us out to dinner with two of his students (grade 12 girls) at a hot pot restaurant. Hot Pot is basically a burner in the middle of the table with a big pot on it that is divided in two…one part is mild broth and one part is spicy broth. You order meats and veggies and then put them in to cook and take ... read more

Our computer broke last night. Makes a weird beeping noise when we try to turn it on, hopefully this problem gets fixed ASAP! Classes went alright today, some not so great (poor English). Ben’s mom called this morning which was a nice surprise! First person from Canada to call us…very nice to hear from home. Went to KFC and the supermarket tonight, took a cab there and he overcharged us. We were bound to be taken advantage of here. KFC was good, but different…the chicken in the sandwich was much more spicy and instead of coleslaw or macaroni salad they give this veggie mix salad (corn, green peppers etc) mixed with mayo…was kind of weird, but not too bad overall. Much cheaper than in Canada (about $7 Canadian for the both of us). No one came ... read more

First day teaching classes, I was pretty nervous but overall I think I did a not too bad job. However, 2/3 of my classes I had teachers sitting in and after my class they would tell me how different teaching is in China then in Canada and I need to work on that...yet they gave me no suggestions. I thought I was doing my job right considering it was my first day...I got them to introduce themselves, read from the text and answer simple questions about it and do some of the work in the text. As far as I know, that's my job! Hopefully things get better:)... read more

Aww it's been 3 yrs and 4 months that Ben and I have been together =P haha just thought I'd point that out haha and it's also been officially 1 week that we have been in China! I tell you, it feels like 1 month =P We picked up a few small things at the smaller market closer to our place today...i got some body wash, hair defrizzer, face cleanser...food stuff but they had no veggies out yet so we had to wait til closer to dinner time for that stuff. Went over to the junior high school (across the street from the senior high)...found where my classes will be and Ben and I share an office on the lower level which is pretty sweet. Got my text books for the classes and I'm still pretty ... read more

Last night we passed out around 6:30pm without even making dinner. We're still adjusting to the time difference, so tonight we're going to try to stay up until at least 9:00pm so we can get into a routine. Since we went to bed so early, we woke up around 5:00pm again and finally got our web cam to work, so I got to talk to my dad on cam and mic and see him as well. We got to see Chelsea (their dog) and she looked so confused because she could hear me talking, but couldn't see me :P We went to the school to sign the contracts, so we are now officially teachers at Chu Shui Experimental School! After signing the contracts, we went down the street to a smaller supermarket and bought a few ... read more

Friday: Ben and I slept over at my mom's Friday night after my Dad and Francine took us to Red Lobster for dinner. Barbara came over and brought the puppies which were super cute! Saturday: Ben's parents came to pick us up at 4:45am to bring us to the airport, we had some issues but everything got solved so that was great. We said our good-byes and of course I cried :P We boarded our first plane (a smaller one) to Chicago at 8:35am and it went smoothly..I did fine :) Saturday/Sunday: We arrived in Chicago and had some time to spare so we grabbed some Quiznos and Starbucks and waited for our flight to Beijing. They played 5 movies on the plane (Hairspray, Chuck & Larry, Hot Rod, Harry Potter and The Invisible). The food ... read more
