Wuhan, a place where i spent 3 years in. Two different schools, the first school i spent a year at, while the second i spent two years teaching at. I have met a lot of different people and learned a lot about the city. It grew to become my second home city, nd i fell in love with the city. Although, during the summers it does get hot an average temperature during the summer months can range from 30C to as high as 40C. There are a lot of things to experience in the city. It does have an active nightlife, many clubs to attend, a great shopping district and a fantastic entertainment area. Not to mention the abundance of night snack areas to get food late at night, as well as a great variety of ... read more

Now its time to talk about a school where i spent two years teaching at.. Of course it is in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province in China. The school itself is located in the suburbs of Wuhan in Jiangxia district, in a smaller area called Miaoshan. I taught grades 3 through to grade 5, which was an experience unto itself. I found the students eager and energetic. Always had a smile on their face every time I saw them. Over time i began to connect with them, a bond more like a parent does with their children. I could see the potential of each student I taught. The school itself housed both the primary school and the junior middle school. I myself, taught on the primary side of the school, for both years that I ... read more

Just a quick note here. I will be flying to America on the 8th of July and staying until the 16th of August. Yes, I am actually 100 percent coming this time. The tickets are bought and everything. Another semester has been wrapped up in Wuhan. Everything is going well, and it's time for the usual flurry of goodbyes as some teachers go home or switch to schools in other cities. I had to let my current grade four students know that I wouldn't be teaching them next year in grade five, after having taught them for two years. That was a bit sad, and I know whoever has their class next year will be very lucky. They're a pretty amazing group of kids. The official word is that I'll be teaching -all- of next years ... read more

Well, my final entry before I leave for my return to Canada. I have been here in China for 3 and a half years. During that time, I have grown accustomed to many different things, and still learning about the culture and its people. I have still not gotten accustomed to many other things, and probably never will. It is with a heavy heart that i do leave, but i know that the students i have taught will grow into bright hard working people with strong values. I also hope that they students will remember the lessons i have taught them not only inside the classroom but about life. I have also learned so much from them as they have from me. I learned from them to cherish the innocence of life, to great each day ... read more

After Nanjing, I took a 3 hour train to Wuhan, another city on the Yangtze. Wuhan, along with Nanjing and Chongqing (where I originally planned to go next, but realized it was too far out of the way) are known as the "three furnaces" of China because they are so hot in the summertime. Fortunately in mid-May they still aren't too bad (although noticeably warmer than Bozeman would be at this time). Because of the way my trains were scheduled, I didn't have a lot of time to do things in Wuhan. I got in around 5pm on Wednesday, after most places were closed, and because the new train station I arrived at is a bit far from downtown, it was after 8 by the time I actually made it to the hostel. I had to ... read more

It's been a fun day today. My friends and I got invited to be guests at a restaurant opening. It was Brazillian BBQ. We got tons of free food and wine, a manicure set, and were generally made much of for the whole of the morning. We also met the boss of the establishment, and had tons of pictures taken of us. There were people dancing in skirts made out of plastic fruit. The place is quite near my school, and we got invited because I frequent a coffee shop owned by the same person. Also, because the owner wanted westerners at the opening of his western restaurant, and my friends and I fit the bill. Other than that? Well, my birthday was at the beginning of the month. Alas, it was right after I came ... read more

Last time I talked to my mom on the phone, she pointed out that I never posted here, to which I pointed out that lately I’ve just been going about a daily routine for the most part. It’s all great fun, but after nearly three years here, I’m at the point where Wuhan just seems like the place where I live. Not terribly exotic. Anyway, I told my mother I’d post something about a typical day here, and so I’ll do that. I’m a huge morning person, so usually I get up at five or six AM. At that time I get dressed, and take a yogurt out of my fridge. I mix in some cereal (it’s possible to buy cereal in Wuhan, but I can’t get used to the milk here. It’s disgusting. Hence using ... read more

After throwing on some laundry and doing some cleaning up, I went out to play basketball. My form has gotten much better and I had improved a lot. About a half hour into my shootaround, a 60+ year old Chinese guy comes by the court. After he jokingly says that he is the next Michael Jordan (in "English"), I toss him the ball. He hits a foul shot. Not bad for an old man. I give it to him again. Swish. And again. Swish. He steps to the 3-point line and I'm sort of laughing to myself. I pass him the ball and he shoots. Swish. One more time. Swish. I pass him the ball again and he goes for a lay-up. Off the backboard and in. He says goodbye and walks away. Yup, I got ... read more

The past week or so has been beautiful here in Wuhan. This week the temperatures have been around 20 degrees everyday; it's been wonderful. Although it does make me a little worried for when May and June when it's suppose to get really hot. Everything is getting greener and flowers are starting to bloom. There's a pond behind our apartments that grows lotus, they are suppose to very beautiful when they start to bloom so I'm excited to see that; but I could do without the frogs who are so loud. Last Saturday we went to the Cherry Blossom Festival at Wuhan University. It was really nice to actually do some sight-seeing instead of just shopping or going to the bar. The Festival happens over a weekend every spring, and because it only happens once a ... read more

Well this weekend was super low key so this blog is going to very short. I think most people stayed in and took it easy; a lot of the staff, including me, were really sick last week. I've had the worst allergies for the last 3 weeks which has, at times, made my asthma act up. It was really bad last week, to the point were I couldn't walk more than 10 steps with out feeling like I was going to pass out. After a few days of that I decided I should probably go to the doctor. There are a bunch of hospitals here but most of the staff go to a French one, because they speak English well, so that was the one I went to. After a short cab ride, that was actually ... read more
