Alright, it’s just my feeble attempt to annoy Sharon with a hint of my favorite “camel commercial” from last year, you know the one… (about hump day). I could have waited until next Wednesday, but she might have seen that one coming! We awoke closer to a normal time this morning, but were still a little anxious as our stay in Shanghai is coming to an end. We enjoyed a somewhat leisurely breakfast; although, it took Sharon a while to get someone to make her a pancake. I took the eggs over medium that had already cooked when I got in the omelet and egg line. Once I realized the eggs were up for grabs, that worked for me! After breakfast I got change for some of the 100 Yuan bills I exchanged earlier this week, ... read more

Alright, if anybody is still reading this, here's the update: I leave within the next two weeks!!! Out of China, into Nepal, then India, then home. I finished teaching all my classes-college and children. It's nice to have a little time to do nothing before leaving. I think about the fact that I am really going back to Nepal and I feel so excited, then nauseous hah. I don't take it as a bad sign though, I feel like people don't think it's the smartest decision for me to go there. It's right though, I want to be there, and I can be there, so why not! So here's the plan: I will spend a month at the children's home with the kids I met last summer. Then I will travel around Nepal for a month ... read more

I started teaching kids again Monday...it went really bad...I think they started school that day and then came to the training school in addition on the same day. They were out of control. One kid basically screamed and ran around the room for an hour. My boss sat in on two of the classes so I spent most of the time with my mind blocked by self-doubt...When you add that to the attitude I had been having you end up with Tuesday and the question, "Why did I come back here?" Apologies to everyone who encountered me Tuesday and before, it was not good. I started planning my escape...leave China after this term, travel in Nepal, and then be in Chicago at a really good time...and then I remembered what makes the world go around...it's not ... read more

Welcome to my travelblog. I am currently living in Wuhan, China and working there as a teacher. I get paid shit but I have a lot of fun in the process. I hope to use this as a stepping stone to travel all over the world. I know it's a dream that is a bit out there, but I'd like to work at it and continue pushing towards that goal. This blog will document some of my experiences, both positive and negative, that I will have in China. I look forward to making some new friends through this blog. Please read this and subscribe if you like. If not then I apologize for disappointing you :) Some notes: I don''t use names in this blog. So, I just give them nicknames or placeholders. Some examples: American ... read more

So since I've been a pain and not updating regularly (I now have Yangshuo and Shanghai to post, not forgetting all the crazy weeks inbetween!) I thought I would give you all a taste of what life in china is like for me and my friends when we are all skint. We spend a lot of our time at each others apartments eating street food and watching movies and... god forbid, Geordie Shore, which I am way more involved with than I care to admit. This is my friend Sam's invitation to his tomorrow night: Hey boys, stop with your toys, hey girls, give this a whirl. So i have some meat, i think it's a treat, it is chicken, so it’s finger lickin'. Then I have some wraps, sadly not on tap. but they will ... read more

While we were still in Shanghai, I had the pleasure of meeting my new friend Joe. Joe has lived in Wuhan for 4 years and he and his wife agreed to take us house hunting! Jill was an amazing host. She welcomed us into her home and made a delicious lunch. They have two adorable boys! William and Brett loved playing with them. She showed us around her complex and we were able to see two houses but none of them hollered home to us. We made plans to see two more houses the next day. Jill went way out of her way to help Bill set up a Wuhan phone number and translate to the homeowners and realtors for us. What a fantastic way to get oriented to our new city! The next day I ... read more

We made it to Wuhan Here in China we draw a lot of attention. We dress differently we act differently, we talk differently and we look different but I will never feel like a sideshow performer as much as I did when we left Shanghai. October 29th was a whirlwind. I had planned on spending our last day in Shaghai relaxing and preparing for our trip but my plans flew out the window. A week earlier I had started to catch a cold. I took some meds and felt better but the day before we left my ear started irritating me. When we woke up the morning of the 29th my ear was hurting a little more. I had insurance coverage but all of my information was mailed to Wuhan so I did not have my ... read more

Chapter 3 China 1-0 Travelers For our first weekend trip away we decided to go somewhere close so we didn’t have to do too much organisation or make it stressful. (Train tickets here get release 12 days in advance and seem to sell very quickly, so you have to arrive at the booking office bang on time and even then still don’t get the ones you want AND you have to go back two days later to book the returns.) I’m not sure how anyone gets anywhere but I’m sure it’s easier if you actually speak Chinese to book them. ) Because of this round-the-houses method of train travel we decided to head to Mulan Shan (Mulan Mountain) which is in Hubei province and only two hours away by bus. This meant that we had the ... read more
