Our Wuhan Hotel
This is the Sheng jia Rose Hotel in Wuhan. It was pretty all lit up at night and the inside was very nice. We made it to Wuhan
Here in China we draw a lot of attention. We dress differently we act differently, we talk differently and we look different but I will never feel like a sideshow performer as much as I did when we left Shanghai. October 29
th was a whirlwind. I had planned on spending our last day in Shaghai relaxing and preparing for our trip but my plans flew out the window.
A week earlier I had started to catch a cold. I took some meds and felt better but the day before we left my ear started irritating me. When we woke up the morning of the 29
th my ear was hurting a little more. I had insurance coverage but all of my information was mailed to Wuhan so I did not have my insurance information. I went to say goodbye to the center where I spent most of my training and I found out one of the girls had just gotten over an ear ache cause by a sinus infection. They offered to take me to the hospital (you go to the hospital for everything here.) Well, we went to the wrong
wuhan at a glance
this was an area of town very close to the yangtzee river. place and it didn’t work out but my ear was still hurting so I called insurance. Within an hour I was at the hospital being whirl winded thorough. It was my turn to feel like a celebrity. The insurance agent was very sweet. She met me at the hospital, filled out all the paperwork, communicated to the staff. I was in seeing a doctor within 10 minutes of my arrival. They told me they wanted a cat-scan, which freaked me out! A cat scan, I pay 10% of my bill, I didn’t want to spend an arm and leg on a cat scan. The insurance agent told me not to worry they are very inexpensive. Within half an hour I was through with the CAT scan and had the film in my hand. The doctor said my scan looked fine and they sent me to see then ENT specialist. He confirmed that I had a sinus infection that settled in my ear canal. Within an hour and a half I had my meds and was heading out. The total of the visit was 240RMB, my portion was 24 RMB. I was floored. 240 RMB is approximately $40 in the United
Han Ji
Han Ji goes along side a river. It is very pretty and lit up well at night. A very popular hang out. States!!!!
We rushed back to the hotel, loaded up all 9 rolling suitcases, 2 backpacks, 2 duffel bags and a partridge in a pear tree. We made quite the site trying to hail a cab. We loaded down 2 cabs and we were on our way to the train station. People gathered around to watch us with all our luggage. There were baggage people who offered to help us for a wage but they wanted a lot of money from us “rich Americans” so we opted to do it ourselves. We made it on the train successfully. We booked a soft sleeper, which is a cabin with 4 beds. Two on top and two on bottom. The tough part was getting all the luggage into the room. Bill is an expert at tetris and somehow got it all in. We slept on the train with the rocking lulling us to sleep. It was pleasant experience sleeping on the train. Our train left Shanghai at 9:40 and we were in Wuhan at 7:30 am.
The ride in had me nervous. The country side was beautiful but the houses were worlds apart from the modern city
Godiva
Between Starbucks and McDonalds there is a Godiva Chocolates on Han Ji we had been staying in. People lived in houses that would have been condemned in America. The roads were all dirt and everything was dirty. As we neared Wuhan it got better but I was still nervous. We arrived at the WuChang Station and once again we were circus performers on parade. This time we opted to let the locals help us with our luggage. We were also fortunate to find a driver with a mini-van to help us to our hotel. We were all able to ride together. The hotel was nice but we were hit by a wave of culture shock. In Shanghai the people at the front desk spoke a little English. Here in Wuhan they didn’t speak any. It was like playing Charades. We got all our luggage into our room, It was very pretty and bigger than the room in Shanghai, and headed out to explore and find food.
We found Han Ji right down the road from our hotel. Han Ji is beautiful. It is decorated in an European style architecture. Right away there was a McDonalds and a Starbucks. The boys opted for McD’s. After my big mac, we strolled
Yummy Chocolate
We all had to have a drink down beautiful Han Ji and looked out at the river as we walked and we ran into a Disney English. I went in to check it out and they were nice enough to let me email my new boss and let him know I had arrived safely. We went back to the hotel and to bed pretty early because we would be house hunting the next day.
