I live in Montana, USA, and have traveled around the USA, as well as to Canada and China. I set up this blog so people can keep track of me while I am in China, summer 2010. I obviously failed at keeping up with it, but I hope to fill in the gaps.

I returned to Asia in May/June of 2011. I started in Shanghai, spent a few weeks in Suzhou, moved across China, and down into Laos, Thailand, and Malaysia, before ending up in Singapore and spending a day each in Macau/Hong Kong and Seoul on the way home.

I went back to China, and also to Taiwan, in May/June 2012.

My blog is now desperately behind.

Just a quick note to catch you up to the present. In about 3 hours I get on a bus bound for Luang Prabang, Laos, which is a slight deviation from my original route plan. Originally I was going to stop in Jinghong, in the far south Xishuangbanna region of China, and in Luang Namtha, a town in northern Laos, but that was mostly because I wasn't sure about connection between Kunming (my last "real" stop in China) and Luang Prabang (my first "real" stop in Laos). Since I managed to get a direct bus, I decided to spend a few extra days in Kunming. Allegedly the bus will take 26 hours, but it is a sleeper bus with actual beds (I was worried about a direct bus being seats only, and I didn't want to ... read more

After Nanjing, I took a 3 hour train to Wuhan, another city on the Yangtze. Wuhan, along with Nanjing and Chongqing (where I originally planned to go next, but realized it was too far out of the way) are known as the "three furnaces" of China because they are so hot in the summertime. Fortunately in mid-May they still aren't too bad (although noticeably warmer than Bozeman would be at this time). Because of the way my trains were scheduled, I didn't have a lot of time to do things in Wuhan. I got in around 5pm on Wednesday, after most places were closed, and because the new train station I arrived at is a bit far from downtown, it was after 8 by the time I actually made it to the hostel. I had to ... read more

China is a country with 5000 years of history, but most of what I have done in Nanjing reflects events of the last 90 or so (apart from the Ming tomb). Tuesday's events focused on the middle of the 20th century. First was the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Museum. In December 1937, after a long campaign, the Japanese military finally captured Nanjing. What followed was an extremely bloody 6-week occupation during which hundreds of thousands of Chinese were murdered and thousands more were beaten or raped. The museum portion had many artifacts from the time, as well as some displays telling the story of what had happened, both generally and with specific examples. It was both interesting and disturbing, and reminded me of the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC. However, what separated this location from the Holocaust ... read more

I left Mike on Monday morning, sad to be leaving Suzhou and a little nervous about going out on my own for 3 1/2 weeks until I meet up with Ben and Cindi in Singapore. When I got to Nanjing I wasn't really sure what I wanted to do, as I hadn't really been in "tourist" mode while I was in Suzhou. My two main sources of "things to do" have been the Lonely Planet guidebook for China, and a website called Wikitravel, which is like Wikipedia but specifically designed for travelers, including attractions, restaurants, transportation information, and other useful things. After checking in at my hostel, I picked a few things from the list, figured out where they were (man, traveling with a computer is handy), and set out to find lunch. I ended up ... read more

Asia » China » Jiangsu » Suzhou May 23rd 2011

I haven't really been doing that much in Suzhou, at least it would look that way if you made a list. And that was kind of the point. I used the time to just be in a familiar city in China, and take a break after the semester, before the month-long solo portion of the trip. Mike and I played a lot of Mario Kart, and a computer game called Deadlock, and mostly stayed around his neighborhood, occasionally meeting up with some of his friends/fellow teachers. We went to a lot of the same old restaurants he had introduced me to before, as well as a few new ones that had opened since I last was in town. It's been a good two weeks, and I'm sad to leave, even as I'm excited about the rest ... read more

Today I went to the train ticket office near Mike's place to get the first 2 of the 4 Chinese train tickets I'll need. I already have my 2 of my 3 Thailand tickets, booked online, (the third is a short hop that I can just buy at the station) and I'll get my Malaysia ones later this week, also online. Last year we went to this office to get tickets to Beijing and attempt to get tickets for Cory, Lacey, and me to go to Qingdao. It was hot, crowded, and due to Expo the availability of tickets was very sketchy. Today, I walked in to find a total of 3 people inside the building, and I strolled up to the counter and was able to clearly, cleanly, and without error, request the tickets I ... read more

I have arrived in China. My flight from Seoul ended up being about 90 minutes late, so I got to the Shanghai airport just in time to get the last bus out of the airport. After a quick stop at the train station so I could buy my ticket to Suzhou for later today, I took a cab to my hostel in the Putuo district, northwest of the Huangpu River cutting the city in half. Today I plan to see a few sights around Shanghai before heading to Suzhou to find Mike's new place, a few blocks from his old one. On the list: * China's pavilion at Expo 2010 - lines for this were 5+ hours long during Expo when I was here last, so I didn't bother trying to see it. Due to high ... read more

OK, technically I'm an Incheon man, as that's where the airport is. My flight from Seattle was fairly uneventful, other than the 3 babies a few rows ahead of me trading off fire engine impressions for the whole 12 hours. I tried to learn a little Korean, but the "learn Korean" program they had on the little screen was not very effective and it took me several runs through just to learn how to say hello, goodbye, excuse me, and thank you (and I only remember 2 of those now...). Fortunately I'm only here for a few hours before I go to China (where at least my mangling of the language is a product of years of hard work and confusion instead of just minutes). It's very foggy here, so my flight to Shanghai has been ... read more

It's Friday morning and I'm proctoring my final exam. I have to finish grading them today because tomorrow I drive to Seattle, from where I will fly to Shanghai on Sunday! Hard to believe the trip is already upon me. When I returned last August I didn't think I would be traveling again this summer, but by October I knew that wasn't going to be an option. I actually bought my plane ticket in January this year, so I've had 4 whole months of counting down to the exact date and time of my departure. Less than 53 hours to go! If you're interested, here's my itinerary. It's pretty well decided down to the day, barring any transportation issues (which, if last year is any indication, will be plentiful...but no Expo this year makes me optimistic). ... read more

1. Shanghai Expo and other hijinks 2. Cory and Lacey's arrival 3. Life in Suzhou the last few weeks 4. Our trip to Qingdao/Huangdao, including some fun buses I'm sorry that I'm weeks behind. I will try to get some things up here soon. Thursday we leave for Xi'an, then we'll be traveling the whole rest of the trip until leaving from Hong Kong on August 5th. UPDATE: I've been back in the US a few weeks, and still haven't caught up. I still intend to! As you might have been able to guess, the last few weeks I was in China I was traveling too much to really have time to keep up with the blog as thoroughly as I wanted to, so I ended up posting nothing. Sorry about that. Anyway, I'll still write ... read more
