Today was a big day at Wuhan Maple Leaf International School. After three years of 7am to 9pm school days, the first Grade 12 class has graduated. Not only did they complete the required courses for the British Columbia Graduation Certificate, in a second language I might add, they also fulfilled the requirements of the Hubei Province Chinese Graduation Certificate. Two nations, two languages, courses for two curriculums, two certificates. Definitely a special group of kids. It was a brave group of parents that decided to send their children to this school three years ago. It was still under construction and we had a staff of about 12 teachers but the dream was big. There were other established Maple Leaf schools in other parts of China which helped to ease their uncertainty. Today there are over ... read more

As a few of us on the staff have said,"It's all too much fun!" Today's lunch was a good example. Over the last few weeks, a group of us have taken off at lunchtime to a nearby "food street" to eat. There are fifty universities in this city and many have a similar area nearby where you can get great street food at a cheap price. There a couple we go to, both adjacent to different universities. Today I decided to document our little journey. We now take everything for granted and every once in awhile I have to give my head a shake and realize that this is not what everyone does. Maybe others would be interested in seeing this side of our life! It's only a five minute ride from the school to get ... read more

Well, the school year is winding down and summer is approaching once again. It is hard to believe we have been in China for 2 and 1/2 years. In another month or so, we will be heading back to Canada and the US for a few weeks and then back to China the end of July. This week, the English Arts Festival took place at the school. It is a showcase of English poetry reading, singing, and short skits that ends with our annual major theatre production. This year the students performed a contemporary version of Romeo and Juliet. The finalists of the EAF put on a great performance before the play to the enjoyment of all of us. It is hard to believe the kids can take on a play like Romeo and Juliet when ... read more

The Hong Kong/Macau blog entry was a couple of weeks old because we have been so busy. It seems that the social life here never stops! In the last couple of weeks we have had our first Chinese wedding, a birthday dinner, a karaoke party and a couple of days ago, we hosted a breakfast for 25 people to watch Pat's live streaming show from Kelowna on the internet. Seven o'clock in the evening in BC, 10 in the morning in China. Anyway, back to the wedding. Vivian, one of the secretaries at the school, tied the knot last Sunday and invited all of us to the wedding. A group of us took her up on her invitation...we decided it was an event we didn't want to miss. I mean how many times does one get ... read more

Here I am in Wuhan, a city I never really thought I'd visit but seems nice enough now that I'm here. I mostly picked it as an in-between spot on my way to yichang to start a tour of the three gorges (on the Yangtze). I was originally thinking of heading south from Guilin to Vietnam but the weather was just so miserable and I had a potential travel buddy to do this so I thought I'd head north on search of sun. (now I'm also well positioned to go to Vietnam during the may 1st holiday). It is still cool and somewhat rainy here today and meant to be again tomorrow, but it should clear up by the end of the week, and anyway my hostel has a very nice place to sit and some ... read more

It is not every day that we have visitors from the other side of the world drop in to see us but five friends from Canada made the trek to Wuhan as part of their Asian tour itinerary. It was only a two night sleepover but a good time was had by all. It is always fun to see the reactions of those new to Wuhan and this group was no exception. From the crazy taxi rides to the bright lights of the Luxiang shopping area at night, we showed what we could of our new home city in the short period of time we had. Their highlight was the rides in the taxis from our place to Yellow Crane Tower and back. They could not believe the traffic and the lack of rules, nor the ... read more

I talked to my boss yesterday, and it looks like I will be doing a third year at my school in Wuhan. I'm quite happy about this. I've made friends here who I'm not quite ready to part with, and I'm honestly very attached to my little apartment here. The job can be difficult at times, but I love it. It has a stronger effect on me than any other job I've had in my life. I feel terrible on days when I don't think my classes have gone well, and elated on days when they do. However, even on the worst days, I know that there is no career that I could ever enjoy more than teaching. I like having work where I get to be creative, and do things that I thought could never ... read more
