'Paradise resort', surfing and Chinese Nightclubs
Published: September 25th 2010Asia » China » Hainan » SanyaWe went to a tropical beach paradise tourist town called Sanya for three days. Sanya is everything you'd expect of a tropical beach paradise resort, with a weird twist. In comparison to our non-westernised university town, where we get fascinated stares and cheery shouts of 'HERRO! hehehe' everywhere, in Sanya we were barely granted eye contact from miserable fruit sellers as they overcharged us for unripe bananas. When they did talk to us, it would be in Russian. The place is full of rich Russian holiday makers who act a lot like the English in Ibiza, and chinese couples posing in wedding outfits on the beach for photographs a few years before they actually get married. The Chinese hate to be exposed to sunlight, so the whole concept of going to the beach to lie there ... read more
“Do You Eat The Pig?” - Hong Kong To Guangzhou To Sanya
Published: June 11th 2010Asia » China » Hainan » SanyaA cautious waitress in a Xiajia Lu (Lu = street) Guangzhou walking street restaurant making sure our menu selection was culturally appropriate. Left the Harbour Hotel early on Saturday 29 May, walked to Mong Kok MRT then transferred to Kowloon Tong MRT for Hung Hom, the main departure point for trains to mainland China. After a delicious $38HK cappucino at the station we exited Hong Kong immigration - yes the security took Rob to pieces AGAIN!!! (I must look like a drug addict) The ticket from Hung Hom to Guangzhou East rail station was $190HK ($30) for the 2 hour trip. This is a fast train which reached 200Km/hr on the main stretches. Entry to China immigration was smooth at Guangzhou station (priority line of course) - our business travel cards gave us a 60 day ... read more
Добрый день товарищ, I've been doing nothing since we last talked. Life has felt genuinely dull as of late. I've been stuck in the country without a passport and fantasizing of going anywhere outside of Zhongshan. The last month I've practiced the art of cooking (burning) Chinese delicacies. I succeeded in being banned from cooking for Carmen, so mission accomplished I'd say. I have also buffed up on my spoken Chinese. Pumping up on new phrases and idioms I'm looking native fit. My tongue is now a rippling bulge of Chinese muscle spitting out the common word with dazzlingly accuracy. Foreigner and local alike fawn over my prowess. Even my Cantonese is starting to make progress, it's taken 2 weeks short of a year, but I can actually mutter a few words. Although truthfully to me ... read more
Spring Festival Vacation- Feb. 9- 16, 2010. We took a 36 hr train ride from Shanghai to the southernmost city in China- Sanya. When the train reached the end of the mainland the entire train was loaded onto a ferry! I took almost two hrs to break the train into sections and load it onto the boat. It only took 30 minutes to cross the waters and get to the island. Sanya is great, it is called "The Hawaii of China". It is a popular tourist destination for Russian, Japanese and Chinese travelers. Many restaurant hosts would approach us speaking in Russian assuming all the white people are from Russia. They would be better off speaking to us in Chinese! We spent every day lounging on the beach, drinking out of coconuts and eating fresh fish ... read more
After a couple of months of cold, rainy weather we decided to spend a few days for our anniversary in Sanya on the South China coast. After a mere three hour flight and ½ hour cab ride we found ourselves in very warm if mostly cloudy tropical paradise. The sun did not show up the whole time but we were able to spend each day on the beach or at the pool. No trip in China comes without a few stories. The staring took a new turn on the plane as a boy who must have been about 10 years old stared at us from the seat in front of ours for at least an hour. We usually get stared at for a few minutes and then they lose interest but not this kid. We were ... read more

After dropping off Ross and Gus at the airport in Guilin on a warm February evening we walked over to the nearest travel agent and looked into a few “what ifs”. We knew we had been cold for three months with little, if any, reprieve. We craved more than anything to simply plop down outdoors, breath clean air, and enjoy a cool (not cold) 633ml Shan Shui, Mountain-Water beer with a good book. Not shivering for more than an hour was also a high priority. What if we could find a cheap ticket south? We had cash, passports, our small travel backpacks, and a solid ten days to travel before Donna and Larry would arrive to Yun’an Province. So we that evening we marched into a small well-chilled travel agency with open minds based solely on ... read more
海南。Hainan The trip started by us waking up at 5 in the morning because it would take 2 hours to get to the airport. But still there was time for McDonalds breakfast. At the airport everything was made super simple by the tour guides who took care of everything. When we arrived in Hainan it was raining but still plenty hot. There we met our tour leader, he later became known as “the touch man”, such a touchy man, whenever he talked to us he always had to be touching someone, turned into quite a fun game. On the bus we had the first of many many games of Uno and at our first stop I was finally able to buy a swim suit which had been such a mission for the last week. Unfortunately swimsuits ... read more
Here are a few more pics and videos! Most of the pics are taken in the Sanya Bay area where we are staying. The fish chomping on my hand were filmed at the Sanya Nantian Hot Springs.... read more
1 beer $2 BBQ street food $1 Fresh fruit pocket change Bottle of water $0.25 Five weeks holiday in the tropics in the middle of winter .........priceless Yes, we are back in Sanya on the south coast of China for the first week of our Spring Festival holiday. Once again we are pigging out on Western food for now at Fat Daddy's and Casa Mia, both a five minute walk from where we are staying. We have had breakfast at Fushan Coffee down the road a couple of times. They don't quite have the North American breakfast thing worked out but it is close enough and the coffee is delicious. They have bacon and eggs, along with a variety of other breakfast choices. And the orange juice is squeezed as you wait. After several months in ... read more
