Welcome to my little travel blog. This thing has been set up just to document my year in Hainan, China studying at Haikou University.
During holiday periods I will be travelling around Hainan at first, and then I'll move on to travelling around the rest of China.

Enjoy!

The train was a big long sleeper, and, after making friends with a woman and her son, along with a little girl who came to look at the foreign person, stayed up until past midnight jus chatting with these kids, showing them pictures and playing games. It was really good fun, and sadly had to part with them at Xuancheng. After finally arriving at Tunxi, some Chinese students started talking to me at the train station, and ended up taking me to the old street of the city and helping me find accommodation. Tunxi's old town is really nice, though it does get exceedingly busy at times, and I ended up buying quite a few bits and bobs to send to the family back home. I also visited a small touristy village outside Tunxi, which was ... read more

The next morning it was time to move on, and trying to find the right bus stop was an absolute nightmare, with Chinese people directing us in all sorts of different directions, and eventually getting some poor Tuktuk woman to drive us, and all of our bags to the long distance bus station. When we finally got there we caught a monstrous series of buses and eventually shared a minibus with some Chinese students and made it up to Guoliangcun, which is a small and awesome village in the mountains, with a "ski resort" (one piste lacking somewhat in incline) and a very dodgy route connecting it to the world. To get there one had to drive off road, in a crudely carved tunnel/cliff path up some rather steep inclines, until eventually, you pass by a ... read more

The next morning, after some quite reluctant waking up and a lovely breakfast from Ayi, we had a little wander before the minibus came at 11. By 11:25 it was quite obvious that no minibus was coming, so we set off on the 45 minute wander back down to the village, which was good fun, just strolling through the beautiful countryside singing songs. Eventually we ended up back in the village and caught a bus which, the driver assured us, was going to Pingyao... After a few hours the bus dropped us in a town and said that we should go to the train station as there will definitely be trains to Pingyao from there... When we arrived at the train station, after an exceedingly busy bus journey on a very over-capacity bus, there of course ... read more

As accommodation was so expensive in Shanhaiguan, I decided the next day to head on to Beijing, where I'd meet up with Pete, Hannah, her boyfriend, and Pete’s elder brother Simon. Beijing was actually really nice, I only spent a day there, so didn't get to do all of the cultural shizz that I'm sure will be around forever. I'm sure I’ll see it sometime in the future! Instead Pete, Simon, and I went exploring, and due to some conveniently open doors we got onto the roof of a skyscraper in the centre of the business district, and got some rather lovely piccies! However, it was getting chilly, so we got some food and headed back to our hostel where we started packing for our snowboarding trip! This involved some quite dodgy transport connections, and ended ... read more

Quite soon, I’d pretty much had enough of Xingcheng, and so decided to head on, and the next morning at about 8am I caught a train to Shanhaiguan, an area renowned for some spectacular areas of the Great Wall and, again, a very old town centre. I arrived and immediately found myself a tuk tuk, and set off to a hostel that lonely planet had recommended. It turns out that the hostel had been closed for a year or two, and so my driver said that he could take me to another place that had quite cheap rooms. This next place was sub average at best, with a room with mould in the corners, no running water, and a severe lack of heating, for 60 kuai...outrageous! I was sure that I could find a cheaper place, ... read more

By now I'd decided that Haerbin was probably a bit too cold for me, so I figured that I'd go on to somewhere slightly warmer...the North Korean border, why not!!! I got a train the next morning from Haerbin to Dandong, a town on the border with North Korea, which was quite interesting! There was a cool bridge that had been bombed by the US at some point, and now just ended mid river. In addition to that there was a cool stretch of Great Wall quite near to the town, so, after a shower, I figured I’d pop over there and climb some of it! It was really fun, and afforded some awesome views over the lake separating China from N.K, and the generally rather cool scenery that surrounded it. Whilst climbing it, however, I ... read more

In Guangzhou we found a hostel, and ended up changing the next day due to extortionate prices...went to a mahoosive shoe Market where Clare got some quite decent fake Ugg boots, and a ridiculous amount of fake designer bits and bobs. We met up with the Germans...and I bought a decent camera...to better document my travels. For some reason we decided that cold barbecued squid was a good idea, and so I suppose it was only our own fault that Clare ended up with pretty horrible food poisoning, which was a pity. Luckily she had recovered by the time it was time for her to head back to the UK (damned exams!). I was sad to see her go, but in march I'm going back home for a bit, which will be lovely. After Clares flight, ... read more

Now Guilin is a big city, and we spent a grand total of about 15 minutes there before getting another bus to Yangshuo (about 1 1/2 hours down the road). I originally hadn't thought wed have time to come here...but I did have a few ideas of things we should do. The first of them was to do a cooking course with Cloud Nine restaurant. Our teacher took us to the farmers Market, where we saw all sorts of pretty dodgy looking things, dogs hanging by big spikes through their heads, all sorts of other meat...and a ridiculous amount of fish and vegetables. We bought a couple of ingredients for the dishes we had chosen to make (chinese dumplings, gongbao jiding, and a famous Yunnan dish, beer fish.) and headed back to the restaurant, and the ... read more

The next day we set off on a massive load of travelling, which involved a huge amount of IPad playing...and landed us in Shilin in the early afternoon. Now, Shilin is famous for it's amazing karst geography...and I'd decided that we really should go and check it out...even though I knew that entry prices to the park were extortionate... We got a minibus from the bus station, which was quite a way away from town... And they took us to the train station to buy some of the last tickets on that nights train to Guangzhou, and to find somewhere to dump our bags. The latter seemed to be slightly dodgy, as we ended up leaving them in a tent/ restauranty shack in the car park that served people catching the train. Meh... On the way ... read more

We finally arrived in Kunming after passing through some rather lovely scenery, and then headed to cloudland, a lovely little hostel which had brilliant maps of the area and directions on where to go. That day we went to the 'flower and bird market' which in fact was an awesome street where we ate crickets and bought quite a few lil prezzies for home..including real authentic, 100% peanut, peanut butter nomtious! There were also a load of places selling dogs! puppies, and birds which was quite sad. On new years eve we started off very early, and headed off to dragons gate, a reputedly beautiful set of carvings and buildings on the side of a ginormous mountain. It was quite an epic climb, especially as we hadn't really adjusted to the altitude yet, and we hadn't ... read more
