My teacher choked to death on a ham sandwich" Dai "Really, did he die?" Belle This week it was Kathryn's Birthday - I can't believe that she is 20. It sounds so old to say that my little sister is 20... at least Nick is still a teenager. On the 28th the gang and I went into Sanya town centre... we walked over the wavy bridge - which is exactly what it sounds like, a pedestrian bridge that is full of little hills so it looks like a wave, and is so amazingly fun to walk over that everyone gets a little bit excited. We had some noodle soup in a little Chinese place - which is becoming so normal and regular it seems almost nonsensical to mention it. And then we went onto a hotel ... read more

Happy Thanksgiving Kai!! Still behind on my blog as you can see from the ^^ title... however, I am catching up; give me a week or so! I had to go to the police station this week so I could report my stolen wallet... three police stations and a wild goose chase around town in the rain was only to be followed by a cocky policeman telling me that it was physically impossible to have something stolen whilst walking along the street. Joy. On the plus side, the Chinese government now have my finger prints. In other news... and probably more optimistic news, Charlie and Dai took us to a new resturant where they serve dongbei food (literally north-eastern). Cheap and yummy... and although coated in oil, it was considerably less slimy than in the university ... read more

A bee is never as busy as it seems; it's just that it can't buzz any slower." Hubbard Hey everybody... I'm sorry I'm so behind on this thing; you know how lazy I can be. It's December here already and I still have a tan - isn't life wonderful... I think the main news since I last posted is that I have nearly completed a month of Shaun T's "Insanity", and my wallet was stolen - which is a huge pain, but it happens to everyone at some point, and this was just my point :) All through my journal this week are sentence after sentence about Insanity, which has obviously been taking up a lot of my time (about an hour everyday, 6 days a week). We have all been doing it together - and ... read more

Oh God help me" Belle whist writing Chinese characters "Even God can't help you now" Luo, our Chinese teacher... On Tuesday night Belle and I went for dinner with Olivia, one of our Chinese friends. In China, I have no idea why, they dance in groups in the streets on campus, every 5 yards there is another group of kids dancing in unison. Olivia managed to persuade us, for a full 5 minutes that they were practicing beginners Kong Fu. At first we really didn't believe her, but she was so certain and persuasive that I really started to believe her, well until she started laughing her head off at least. Wednesday as usual was spent at the beach.... and our bus nearly crashed on the way there... he slammed on the breaks, narrowly avoiding a ... read more

My balls, my balls, my mental balls" Lola the Russian Week 3 in Sanya was characterised by... illness and bus trauma. BUT, we finally have all our classes sorted! With the typhoon little more than a distant memory, Belle and I set off for the town centre, navigating the way (for the first time) all by ourselves. As the laws of the universe seem to dictate, something must always go wrong when you don’t speak the language. This time, the bus crashed. I have been waiting a while for this to happen as the roads in china are mental. As I cross them, I whisper prayers to every god imaginable and screw up my eyes so as to not witness my own imminent death. This time the bus driver wasn't going too fast as we were ... read more

We will eat anything with legs, except a table, and anything with wings, except a plane - The Chinese Belle and I managed to order some dinner by ourselves in the cafeteria this week. She held her hands in the air and said "anything, anything" while I looked at the giant menu of Chinese characters and shook my head as if to say, I don't understand a flipping thing. We might not have got what we wanted, but it was 10 to 10 at night and anything would have done, even scrambled eggs and spam on rice. My first trip to the supermarket was characterised by being followed around by staff members and taking pictures of all the funny foods. I bought some Toss crisps and some coconut bread. All in all, I consider that a ... read more

So.... no facebook in China Although there seem to be countless ways around this particular problem, a part of me appreciates it being blocked, as I don't feel the pressure to talk to everyone all the time... it also gives me a chance to really write a proper blog, and by proper I mean writing it when I’m actually in the country. And with all this new found time I'm writing about, I've yet to complete this post and I have already been in Sanya for 2 weeks. But, as I am in the midst of a typhoon, and I missed the beginning of the film that everyone is watching because I fell asleep, I've finally sat down to start writing... and boy is it windy outside. The plane journey to Beijing was uneventful, the flight ... read more

Oct. 14. We were sad to say goodbye to our fellow travelers. Everyone had gotten along well, and we had shared so many adventures together. Michael, of course, had been a fantastic and entertaining guide. We hope our paths will cross again. Wayne and I got a ride on our tour bus with several others flying out of Hong Kong at about the same time. We, however, are not getting onto a 13-hour flight, at least not yet. We flew an hour and a half to Sanya, Hainan Island, the "Hawaii" of China. We had been invited by the Jin family, Wayne's student Jin Wang and his parents. Their home is on the north side of Hainan, but they thought we would enjoy the tourist attractions on the south side, so they put us up in ... read more

Greetings, and apologies for taking so long to post our next blog! We stayed fairly low-key leading up to our latest vacation. We had May 1st-6th off from teaching for China’s May Day holiday, so we flew off to Sanya. Sanya is located on Hainan Island, which is China's southern most province. It is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the country and it is known as China's Hawaii. We started our journey late Monday night after Nick and I were both done teaching. We had a rough start to our vacation with a freak downpour making it impossible to catch a cab to the train station, but eventually made it just in time. Once we got to Shanghai, we had to wait overnight for our flight to leave early Tuesday morning. We ... read more
