We slept in a bit and decided for breakfast we'd get something quick at the bakery down the street from our hostel. The bakeries here are strange. Most of the baked goods come wrapped in plastic and taste a bit different. You can still find something good though. The plan for today was to meet up with two others and go to Nantian Hot Springs, arranged by our hostel. Originally, it was just going to be the two of us, but the more people that went, the cheaper the overall price would be for the taxi ride there and admission. It takes about 50 minutes to get there from our hostel, so anything to cheapen the price.... The two people the joined us: John, a Canadian in his mid 60's. His daughter is currently teaching in ... read more

Knowing we wanted as much time in Sanya as possible, we got up early to shower, pack and head out of our hostel by 8:30am. We headed out to the main street, flagged down a taxi easily and 15 kuai later we arrived at the South Bus Station. There were tons of people outside yelling "Sanya? We take to Sanya!" but we decided it'd probably be safest if we took a real bus rather than hopped in someone's gypsy cab for the 3.5 drive down to Sanya. 78 kuai per person gets you a rather cushy seat on a comfortable air conditioned bus, complete with 2 movies (in Chinese, of course). We bought some muffins and water and boarded our 9:20am bus. Apparently it used to be a lot harder to get between Haikou and Sanya, ... read more

As I was leaving Bo'ao, the innkeeper gave me a ride to the city where I needed to catch my bus, quite an upgrade from the little local bus I had taken on the way there, packed to the gills with people. It was at the bus station that I got my first hint of the difficulties of traveling during Chinese holidays, as I had to wait almost 2 hours for my bus. Part of that might have been because I was taking the express bus, which was the peak of luxury--huge reclining leather seats, minimal music, no stops--all of which were quite welcome (I'm sure I would have enjoyed the local bus as an experience, and I might have gotten to see more of the island, but I'm always at high risk of getting motion ... read more

October 3, 2009 - The New Moon Festival fell on our second full day in China. Our hostel held a large barbeque that night with lots of fresh seafood, and vegetables that we skewered ourselves and cooked over a trough full of hot coals. That style of barbeque is really popular in China. A lot of the people staying in the hostel came down to the patio a little before dark. We drank beer together and had our formal introductions while the girls who worked in the hostel prepared the food and set up for dinner. I met a group of four tall, blond-haired, blue-eyed Swedish guys, A guy named Richard, and his friend Shona from England - they are taking classes in Kunming, their Swedish friend Veronica, Jason and Rick from the U.S. are working ... read more

We caught the train October 1st (National Day) at 10:45...and rode for about 10 hours to Zhanjiang (a city on the southern coast of Guangzhou province). The views were both beautiful and surreal, but the ride was crowded and uncomfortable. A hundred or more people crammed into the train car in Guilin, and most of them rode for 6-7 hours, leaving us only a few precious hours to stretch our legs out in our seats. We played several rounds of musical chairs with the people sitting near us in order to be close enough to talk to one another. Every once and again I caught glimpses of what I can only assume China looked like 40 years ago...save for the power lines cris-crossing the fields. The last couple hours we practically had the train car to ... read more

For Spring Break we got a package deal which included round trip tickets and 4 nights at the Holiday Inn at Yalong Bay (a 5-star Hotel…no sarcasm) for $500US. Since our entire trip was taken care of by an agency, we did not run into any problems during our vacation. Our stay in Sanya was the definition of “chill”. Our group included Silas, Rochelle, Samantha, Josh, and me. On our way to Pudong Airport, Silas and I decided to take the Maglev, a train that operates by magnets and travels at 300km/hr. We arrived in Sanya where we were picked up by a driver to take us to the hotel. Our hotel was located at Yalong Bay along a beach, but it was a little far from the main city. To get into the main city, ... read more

The first semester is over, and the first week of our month of Chinese New Year holiday is over. And what a week it was... We left the cold weather in Wuhan last Sunday and headed due south to Hainan province and the most southern city in China, Sanya. It is only a two hour flight from here but a twenty degree Celsius increase in temperature, which is what we were looking for! Being as disorganized as ever, I booked the flight and the "hostel" online at the last minute so did not really have any idea what to expect when we arrived. We would have loved to have spent the whole month travelling but due to our last three summers of cross-country travelling and the fact that we are moving to another apartment in a ... read more

This November, HKIS had its PEAK trips. I can't remember what PEAK stands for, but it's a week when the school closes down and all the kids are off on trips around China. Sixth graders all do the same trip - this year, to Beijing and Xian. Eighth graders go on adventure trips in pretty large groups. And seventh graders have the best trips of all - they get to choose four of the trips on offer and get placed in one of those four. the trips are either hiking, biking or community-service oriented. This year, I went with the trip to Hainan Island, an island off the eastern coast of Vietnam. We cycled 100 k.m. over four days - which, really isn't all that much for real cyclists, but was perfect for me. Here are ... read more

Aside from people we saw along the way, part of our trip involved a service component. We visited a local school and taught them how to play hopscotch and 4-square. They sent a kid to climb a palm tree and throw down some coconuts, which they then cut open for us to feast on the juice and coconut flesh. We also met up with the employees and students of a school for students with disabilities. We hung out at the beach together, and it was beautiful to see our kids trying to help these kids out. ... read more
