As a truck thunders towards you, you soon realize you are in a game of chicken. In a country where the largest vehicle has right of way, the Boda-boda hits his horn, swerving into oncoming traffic. You close your eyes and pray, hoping to escape with your life. On entering Kampala you are amazed to see complete mayhem on the roads. As thousands of motorbikes swerve in and out of traffic you realize the road rules are simple. Larger vehicles have right of way, unless of-course you are a fearless Boda-boda driver. As you climb on-board your Boda-boda with sixty litre backpack, day-pack and tent, you struggle to balance on the back of the motorbike. As the driver takes you through potholes, between trucks, and across sidewalks, you learn why five people die in road accidents ... read more

Matoke, rice, irish and millet... mmm... all foods that we have been served every meal and it has only been 5 days but has started to get quite repetetive. Day 2 of medical camp saw another 500 people come to visit doctors, dentists, peadiatritions, eye doctors, HIV testing, blood doning and councelours. another great day at st John's church. Wednesday the team split into 3 groups, 1 going to Fort portel, 1 going to a couple of medical projects the other side of kampala which left a group of 6 of us. We went off to a couple of Slums; the first was called Katanga, which was just unbelievable with 18,000 people living in this community (size of Nailsea) but only have 4 toilets between them all. As we walked through we stopped at a river ... read more

Hello all 2 flights, 2 curries, a pizza, 12 hours later with not much sleep and we have arrived in Uganda! The flights were... fine, the curries were not, the pizza was good the lack of sleep not so much. We were met by Francis and Ian and got on our way to join the others for more food. It's about an hour drive into Kampala from Entebbe airport which gave us a great oppurtunity to look out the window and soak up the culture. We were pretty speachless by what we saw... chicken, cows, goats, pigs are all animals I previously have looked after and it is strange to see them eating out of rubish piles, ankole cows with huge horns walking alongside people cutting through traffic and the poverty was unbelievably bad. We met ... read more

Next morning we were up early again and it was a border crossing day. When we got to the border Amy collected all out passports and the money needed from each of us for the Ugandan visa and went and did it all for us. We waited on the bus and bought drinks etc out the windows. Finally she came back and off we went into Uganda. We had lunch in a carpark of a Chinese restaurant that backed onto a petrol station which was odd, with the tables and chairs up on the grassy bit. Lots of people looked at us funny. There was a big roundabout next to us and there had been an accident earlier in the day or the day before and a huge truck that had been pulling a trailor with ... read more

Hello all! Sorry it has been a while since I have written an entry but I've been quite busy in Uganda. Let me just say, this place is AMAZING. I have been here for almost 3 weeks now. Wow! So because of our busy schedule and the fact that the power here goes out all the time I hardly ever get a long computer sesh. So basically there are all these issues with the government and the electric companies and so they turn the power off every day at some point, its so annoying and thus disables me from getting on here regularly. So I pray that this blog makes it and im not cut off! But who knows. Well I guess if you are reading this then it made it, so Praise God! Anyway so ... read more

Heading to Uganda for a field trip I am now on my master degree in outdoor education, at the Norwegian School of Sport Science. My plan was to write about mountain tourism in Ruwenzori National Park, Uganda. I’ve been talking to several people with experience from this area, last winter, and I also got some good contacts here in Uganda, from one of them. During the summer I have been working on my project plan and emailing with the contacts in Uganda. So, I finally went to the airport 4th of august to fly down to Entebbe, the former capital of Uganda and situated by the northern part of Lake Victoria. I spent my first week in Kampala to try to sort of the practical things around my study. But this was trickier than I expected! ... read more

It has been a great 2 months and 4 countries traveling with "The Wolfpack" (Us and 2.5 Israelis and a .5 South African) in a bakkie named Ian. While Ian liked to break down as much as dalla dalla, boda boda, or motola we still had a great time. The animals were amazing, sunsets breathtaking, diarrhea consistent, and the laughs endless. ... read more

I have made it to Uganda, Africa!!! WOOHOOO! :) Honestly, it just doesnt seem real that I am here, its like a very like-like dream. So, I arrived into Entebbe airport around 3pm on Monday the 1st of August. All of the flights were smooth and they didnt feel like they were too long. From Dubai we flew to Ethiopia which was about 4 hours long and from there to Uganda was about 2 hours. It was really cool because I met a friend at the Dubai airport as we were getting the same flight. She was a little older than me, but a lovely girl from London who was also doing some volunteering for one month in Uganda, I love that the Lord just blesses me with friends everywhere I go. I was feeling kinda ... read more

Today was the day of the exams, the students were soooo nervous and shaking like leaves in the wind but did so well and I couldnt be prouder, I was so impressed with them. Mikes voluteer casualties really put them through their paces as well, screaming, fainting and even convulsing at one point apparently. But the first aiders came through, they took care of all their casualties really well and passed with flying colours. On return to the hotel I decided I needed to get my nails done before coming back, ok the last time I did that in Uganda I thought I was going to die and this time was no different, water all over the plug sockets - electric shocks was definately on the cards but I came out alive, with pretty nails. The ... read more
