This morning we arrived at the office and it was Mikes turn to take over the first aid this morning, it is his favourite part of first aid, the blood and gore or better known as Wounds and bleeding, the trainees came dressed in their old clothes and overalls prepared to be splattered with blood (tomato ketchup) however it was decided to save this until the assessment tommorow. whilst I prepared my work for the guys coming to the UK in July Mike did his blood and gore bit, then it was bandage practical time... we took out the fake wounds (small plastic wounds) and stuck them over arms and legs and everyone bandaged each other, Mike and I were impressed with how quickly the group in Uganda picked up the bandaging, they all did extremely ... read more

Its 30 degrees in the UK and 23 degrees and raining in Uganda? what is going on? I am supposed to be the one boasting about the weather not you guys :) lots of noise from the bar outside the hotel so my room was moved on Monday night, I thought great I will finally get a decent nights sleep, I put the lock on the door and someone tried forcing the door open at 1am, the reception had not logged my room change and the room was given to someone else. At 2am I recieved a call, the call was to ask me why I was in the room!?! after grumpily explaining the situation, I fell back to sleep and awoke at 6am groggy and not at all ready for the day. But last night ... read more

I walked into the restaurant in the hotel tonight, on my own, Mike is busy with his Open University work so he is eating in is room. I hovered around the buffet, buffet food gets a bit boring after a while but I asked the young girl who smiled at me like a cheshire cat, Sumaya, what she recommended "Goat" she said, well of course she would I thought, they always recommend goat, ah well what have I got to lose? its buffet food, it i dont like it I will change it! so I took a scoop with a small bit of steamed rice and sat down as Sumaya told me how the English man earlier ran to get his camera to take photos because he had never seen goat before (cooked that is), I ... read more

Today Caroline (Mantrac HR Manager) picked me up at the hotel and took me to her house for lunch, I was really excited about meeting her family she told me that she wanted to show me how Ugandan people lived and wanted me to experience the Ugandan Sunday lunch. it was a pleasure. On the way to Carolines house we stopped at many traffic lights, in doing so you then attact the street sellers and the beggars to the car, on this occassion some of these happened to be small children, some of them small enough to be babies in the arms of other babies and this sight cant help but pull on the toughest of heart strings. Caroline was obviously disturbed by the sight of the children and told me how she dislikes it, she ... read more

hello, I made it safe to Kampala on our tiny prop plane that made even me eeek a few times, Mike laughed at me and said "I thought you was a flying hero" I explained that I liked flying, I just wasnt keen on prop planes... We arrived at Dar airport and my suitcase went through the scanner, not something that we do at Heathrow airport but through it went, the customs officer approached me rather brash "open your bag" I fiddled with the lock, "I said open it" she pushed, I thought blimey what is this all about? forgetting about Annie. She forced my bag up and open and rummaged through it and opened Annies bag and I smiled she then stopped, confused, and looked at it "What is this?" I explained that it was ... read more

It is hard to believe that my time in Uganda is quickly coming to an end. I am honestly sorry to see it ending and have had a truly amazing experience. I feel very comfortable here, confident in navigating the streets in Kampala and dealing with Old Park ( the chaotic mini bus park which is hard to believe unless you see it for yourself). It is rather unfortunate that so many people believe this country to be unsafe. It is not and a very beautiful place with wonderful, friendly people. Granted, there are problems, as in any third world country, such as, the President if you can call him that. Actually, I would have to say he is a dictator and does not treat his people very well. Working in the malnutrition ward at Mulago ... read more

So the election process is now over and as a neutral(ish) observer it was an intriguing time to be in the country. During the run-up to the elections I would frequently have my assumptions challenged in conversations with people, and it was fascinating to feel the atmosphere change suddenly and then back again almost as quickly. It felt at times like everyone had a stake in politics. I could not understand it. Nearly everyone I had met, even those with seemingly no interest in politics, suddenly became obsessed supporting one candidate or another or even standing for one of the infinite positions in local government. Finally, in a conversation with Nicholas in Mbale I discovered what might be behind it. He was fervently supporting his cousin in his quest to be an MP, rushing around places ... read more

Caught my 9:00 pm flight from Heathrow for Uganda & arrived in Entebbe around 7:35 am expecting someone to meet me since have no idea where I am supposed to be staying. Went through customs, paid my $50 Visa fee which is all they care about, picked up luggage started looking for a sign with my name. No one there, hmmm. Airport is pretty small (reminds me of a Carribbean airport) so should not be hard to spot someone. Now what since phone doesn't work???? A cab driver offered to take me someone where but where?? Used his phone to call me contact person. No answer. Brief period of panic thinking maybe everything was a scam. Lucikly there was another number to call. Finally an answer. Explain I am at the airport waiting for a pickup. ... read more

After such a successful reduction of the AIDS prevalence rate for the best part of a decade, ridding the country of the disease completely was always going to be a harder challenge to overcome. So it has proved. Uganda’s HIV/AIDS rate has stabilised between 6 and 7% for most of the past decade and most studies now point to a slight increase. As our counselling tutor pointed out in his introduction seemingly small upward trends, such as the estimated rise from 6.4% to 6.7% between 2005 and 2008 have a huge human impact as it translates to an extra 45,000 with the virus. In part, the rise can be explained simply by the fact that more people are staying alive. The rollout of ARVs in 2004 has kept many people alive who would have otherwise reduced ... read more
