(these photos have nothing to do with the post, but photos are always good so I have attached them. Here are some photos of the best signs and ads I've come across in Uganda) It's been a week since the bombings but they largely remain the centre of the media attention here. The front page of today's newspaper had the photographs of two of the suspected dead bombers (bloody faces and all) as well as computer imaging mock-ups of what they probably looked like before the blast. Apparently the FBI has a number of operatives here who are working with the Ugandan police force to find the bombers. As of Friday, the reported death toll was: 62 Ugandans 11 Ethiopians/Eritreans 1 Irish 1 US 1 Sri Lankan 1 Indian 1 Kenyan Museveni has responded to the ... read more

I'm sure you will all be happy to hear that I have become a hermit and spent the last two nights at home watching E!. I now know more about their many reality TV stars than I ever thought I would. For example, did you know that Bordy Jenner is Kim Kardashian's step-brother? Well now you do! I also straightened my hair for the first time since I felt I had to look presentable at the ICC Review Conference in early June. And I painted my nails. Although I don't actually go out every night and have been known to stay at home and watch Kendra (I know, horrible) there is something about the self-imposed restriction of movement that is making me very restless and resentful. I did, however, go to the country club to go ... read more

The last week of my trip was wonderful. They threw a goodbye lunch for me at work, and then the family I'm staying with also had a lunch for me on Sunday right before I left. I was, of course, sad to go, but knew that I would be happy to see everyone at home. I left for the airport with the entire family with me. They all came to see me off, and it was Jane and Michelle's first times to see the airport. Saying goodbye to everyone was hard, and I gave everyone hugs, which may not have been culturally appropriate, but seemed necessary to me. I then went through security, etc, and called my mom before I boarded the plane. Later, on the plane from the Netherlands to Detriot, I was sitting by ... read more

Hello !! Jess and I have now found a reliable internet café, pity we leave on Thursday am!!! Oh well!! Here in Rukungiri life is still good, although it is nearing the end!! I will be soo sad to leave the school, Jess and I had a few tears yesterday as it was our last visit to the children’s service, we got up and said a few words to which all the borders and teachers screamed and shouted and were just lovely- rather emotional! The MD team have been here a week, its different dynamics to the last team in which we were a little family, but we are plodding on. On Saturday it was visitors day at the school-aka parents evening but an all day thing. It was quite a big day I think, all ... read more

Due to recent events I'm going to have to rush through the week to last nights events. I wasn't sure if it would make news but this morning when I woke up the first headline that I saw on CNN was "Death toll rises in Uganda bomb attacks". I'll start by saying that last weekend I went to the Uganda v. Kenya rugby game. It seems that rugby games are more of a social activity than sporting event. After the match the rugby pitch turns into a giant night club. We were too tired that day to check it out but it's apparently a very popular spot to go to. On Sunday we all went on a "safari" which really ended up being 6 hours each way on a bus only to find no animals. It ... read more

Below is my original post from last night, followed by updates including the new death tolls: I just wanted to give everyone an update of what is happening in Kampala right now. I’m not sure when/if this will hit the international news sources but 2 bombs just went off in the city. One at a restaurant called Ethiopian Village, one at the Rugby club. So far I have seen reports of between 23 - 33 dead with a higher number of injured, both of which are unconfirmed and may rise. Ethiopian Village is as close as a “regular” viewing spot for games for me - my cousin and I discussed going there tonight but in the end I didn’t want to go to the other side of town and he opted to go to another place. ... read more

It has been a while since we last updated our blog. A lot has happened since we last blogged and it is hard to know where to start. A good place to start is with the successes of the past few weeks. You may remember that in our last blog we mentioned that there were two street children that desperately needed help. One of these was Charles, a fifteen year old boy who had an horrific burn right down to the muscle on his lower leg. Charles went to the slum outreach programme for medical help and counselling. When we saw the burn we realised how serious it was and knew that we had to get him medical attention at the local hospital as soon as we could. The burn was so severe that without a ... read more

Last weekend I attended an Introduction. As I think I mentioned before it's a traditional ceremony that takes place before the wedding for the families of the bride and groom to be to meet each other. Well, let's just say it was a real Ugandan experience. My roommate has known the groom for a while and he called he up about a week before the wedding and invited her and a friend. Lucky me! Little did we know that this invitation also meant we were a part of the groom's party. So on the day of the wedding we are supposed to meet the groom, let's call him S, at a roundabout outside of Kampala to get our gomesis (as featured in my last post), dress and the head to the wedding. The first meeting time ... read more

So. It has been quite a while since I've blogged and I apologize for that. But I am not too apologetic, because when I'm not blogging I am generally in the midst of enjoying Uganda. I'm not going to say that I never had internet while I was traveling around, but I didn't necessarily want to spend any time on a computer. So I didn't. But now, at the office, I have three reports to write, and so obviously this is the best time to update. Two weekends ago, Blythe, who is another intern at ACODE, and I went to Jinja (the second-biggest city in Uganda, situated right on the Nile) for a day of whitewater rafting and sightseeing. This was a change from my general approach to Uganda which had been less pursuit of tourist ... read more

Ellie has asked if we would put a message on her blog to say that she still can’t get onto the internet to write up her blog, but wants to say “hello” to everyone and apologise. We have had several texts and the odd phone call from Ellie and from what we can make out, last weekend was spent painting some murals in classrooms. On Sunday after going to the children’s service, there was more painting with the help or hindrance of some of the children! This morning we had a lovely text saying that some of her class had just brought her some presents in, three eggs and two passion fruit and she was so thrilled and humbled. We won’t say a lot more as firstly we don’t want to spoil anything she will hopefully ... read more
