Background: Shortly after independence, Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged to form the nation of Tanzania in 1964. One-party rule came to an end in 1995 with the first democratic elections held in the country since the 1970s. Zanzibar's semi-autonomous status and popular opposition have led to two contentious elections since 1995, which the ruling party won despite international observers' claims of voting irregularities.

Captain Starfish

 Africa » Tanzania » Zanzibar
hello, i have been socked in out on the east coast these past day by heavy rain and foul weather generally. jambiani is a small village where once grand european hotels stood along the coast and the powder white sand but now have been reduced to crumbling wrecks. when it rains, which it has done every day, the sand turns to mud and the locals get wet and i run for cover. in the morning a spooky blanket of mist makes walking through ancient village ruins of goats and weather beaten women like something from a dream and every morning i [View Full Entry]

A Zanzibar Door Seller
A Zanzibar Door Seller
This gentleman could not care less about my visa situation, he just wants to sit at the base of his doors selling doors to the great and the good.
17.04.2008 Pemba to Zanzibar Yesterday, was a day of waiting. We packed our final personal items, packed our stuff, and waited for the minibus to take us to the airport. There is a major fuel shortage in Pemba and so we all had to go into one minibus. Stuart and Emma, (our managers) were flying out first, so the rest of us waited in the Old Mission Lodge. We ate some chapatis and strange spring rolls while waiting for our flights. The Zanair let410 landed gracefully but late, on 5000ft long runway and rolled out. The sun was low in the [View Full Entry]

hey, yesterday when i woke up i went to meet hassan, my friend from the ferry, early at 8am down in stone town by the marketplace. he was there when i got there wearing a fez already ready to go so we took off on a dala-dala mini bus across the island east to his village of makunduchi. he was eager for me to see where he lives and what he does in the day, and to meet his family and friends. we jumped crammed into the back of a sawed off van with twenty barefoot men and twenty masked woman [View Full Entry]

 Africa » Tanzania » Zanzibar
there are quite a few other travellers on the island of zanzibar and along with them quite a few things catering specifically to tourism. wandering around strange parts of stone town you bump into other travellers doing the same every so often. i am about to meet my friend from the ferry ride over. he is coming to this internet cafe to pick me up and take me who knows where! everyone has a cell phone here, but no one can afford to use it for more than about 10 seconds per call, so i said it was me and [View Full Entry]

der Apfel

Africa » Tanzania » Zanzibar » Zanzibar City
