After a relatively short trip sunning ourselves on the deck, our boat docked into the harbour in Stone Town at about mid morning, and in a blaze of sunshine we disembarked and went through customs. In spite of Zanzibar being part of Tanzania, immigration and customs are mandatory for any visitors. The group from our safari trip were staying for a few nights in Zanzibar and were staying in another hotel in town- we were staying for 6 nights and had a hotel booked on the other side of the island, so we left our luggage in their place and took off to explore this ancient and fascinating town. Like a lot of African towns, Stone town juxtaposes wealth and poverty perfectly, with large, ornate, opulent buildings emerging from crumbling ruins which quite often is someone ... read more

Our quite interesting boat ride to Zanzibar took us to Nungwi at the northern tip of the island. It apparently is the second most visited city in Zanzibar, after Stone Town. Nungwi is popular because of its postcard white-sand beaches and sparkling azure water. It was pretty odd to see some Maasai and their cows hanging out with the tourists on the perfect sand beach, which we walked on for miles. The snorkelling right off the beach was ok, but we had to watch for the spiny urchins, which were denser than we've ever seen them. Of course we sampled tasty Zanzibar food, with the pancake/crepe style chapatis being one of our favourites. Chapati, it's what's for breakfast, lunch and dinner! In Nungwi we stayed in a small guest house outside of the resort area, within ... read more

Hello All, I'm currently writing this from a very noisy hotel room in Dar es Salaam, the commercial capital of Tanzania, having arrived back from an incredible week in Zanzibar. Having flown into Zanzibar from Kilimanjaro, yesterday I got the ferry back to the Tanzanian mainland. The journey was so rough that at some points it seemed as though 'Yellow Submarine' would have been a more appropriate Beatles song to name this blog entry but luckily my stomach and the boat's hull managed to hold out. My time in Zanzibar was truly the start of my solo travels, as I was surrounded by so many people during my Maasai volunteering stint that I was never really alone. What I've discovered is Africa can be a very unforgiving place to be a solo traveller, even in the ... read more

Hello All! I finally have found a corner of Africa with WiFi, a hammock, and an even rarer anomaly; a cold beer! I therefore will now attempt to give you a detailed summary of my past 4 weeks volunteering with the Maasai. Before I start, I will apologise that I am having to cram everything into one post; I will try to include as much as possible but unfortunately some may have to wait for my return otherwise I will spend all my time on this beautiful island of Zanzibar typing. You wouldn't want me to go through such hardship right? Since I did write my first post in Paris, I feel I should give a quick word on Amsterdam. It will only be quick though because thinking about Europe is going to make me teary-eyed. ... read more

Arriving in Malawi the border crossing was a little less crazy than before. There were guys desperately trying to sell us drinks whilst we tried to figure out what the entry form was asking us. Some countries ask the bizarrest of questions, I remember the visa form for Kenya asked what your father’s occupation was. Malawi’s was just confusing English. We headed onto Kande Beach on Lake Malawi, here on this beautiful spot you could see why the lake is called the calendar lake. It extends 365km up and down by 52km wide. David Livingstone nicknamed it the lake of stars because fisherman used to use lanterns when they went fishing at night. We went for a village tour of Kande seeing how they prepare their staple meal of Kasava, which gives off a very strong ... read more

THE ISLAND.Located in the east of Africa, is a semi autonomous part of Tanzania. The official language is Swahili and locals practice Islam. The flight from Dubai via flydubai is approximately 7 hours and 50 minutes with an hour lay over at Dar Es-Salaam, the capital city. Our round trip fare was 2,200 AED per person (including our additional check in luggage for the diving equipments and personal seating option), however during off season, the airfare is about 1,200 AED. From the airport, we were picked up by our hotel's service which costs $60 per car, one way. The drive to Nungwi, where our hotel, The Z Hotel is located, is at northern part of Zanzibar, which is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes drive. The ride was smooth and because its already late, there was no ... read more

We took the ATC vehicle to a ferry that was pretty much a floating bridge and had a hot 20 minute ride across a bay. Then we took a bus to another ferry which would bring us to Zanzibar where we took another bus to get to our hostel. All in all it took about 4 hours but we arrived with time to put our bags down before starting a spice tour. Oh man! This tour was right up my alley. I enjoyed the heck out of it. I went on a similar tour in Grenada and this one seemed a little more comprehensive. They had sooooo many different kinds of spices. And we got to try them all straight from the plant!!! Our guide for the tour was hilarious too. He had some sort of ... read more

Mais ... read more
