Arusha is quite the pleasant place, so much so that Lush declared it the worst city of the trip before he was robbed of his passport and cards and cash. I would have to agree with him even though I only spent 2 half days there. We arrived on a Sunday night and Kris and I headed out to book a safari before all the places closed. We somehow managed to secure a pretty good price despite Kris's smiling, over-excitement, and general agreement to anything the tour operators told us. And despite my belief that we had been ripped off, a safari vehicle actually showed up in the morning to pick us up. We headed out with Thomas, Ester (Dutch) and Erin (Loopy) to the Serengeti and Ngorogoro conservation area. The Safari experience: Even after my ... read more

THE AFRICAN FACTOR If you have ever been over to Tanzania to help with the campaigns, serve as missionaries, or you’ve just sat around long enough to hear the many exciting stories of someone else who has, then the term, “that’s just the African factor” may ring a bell. With all of the differences in cultural thinking, normal ways of life, and just the average way to get things done from day to day is going to vary no matter where you are in this world. As missionaries you have to learn to take the African factor into consideration when working hand in hand with the brethren there. But it dawned on me this morning as we’re traveling about meeting so many new faces here in the states and getting ready to go, that there ... read more

Arriving in Arusha in the late afternoon, we checked ourselves in and headed off to book a safari through the National Parks. From the moment we stepped off the bus we were mobbed by hundreds of toutes trying to sell us safaris, Arusha is the main gateway to most safaris in Tanzania. We slowly climbed through the crowd and made our way to a tourist info place where we were able to find a reputable safari company that had room for myself and Ryan for a four day trip. Jord was still sick with Malaria, and Jas was not in the financial situation to jump on the safari with us. After booking our safari, we headed out to Pizzarusha, a popular pizza shop in Arusha and had a great dinner. Up in the morning to leave ... read more

Cool, Crazy, Like a Banana in the Fridge So I have a theory... And it's that you can tell a lot about a nation of people by how they greet each other. For example: Australian: Q: "How you going?" A: Good, thanks! (Even though in the literal sense it could be claimed that our answer should be "By Car" or "Fast") British: Q: "You Allright?" A. Yes, thank you. (Even though every time I get asked this my initial reaction is to say - "Yes, I'm fine - does it not look like I'm allright!?" - eg Is my head falling off or something?) East African Q: "Mambo!?" A. Poa Poa. Poa Kichizi, Kaman Dizi, Dan Ya Frigi So arguably, Aussie's passion for sport has gone so far that our greeting uses a verb relating ... read more

We were sitting in a room full of couples, moms, dads, and grandparents. The lights down, a power point presentation running and a box of Kleenex in the middle of each table. The speaker was giving an unsuccessful speech to prepare us parents for our children leaving home. The words were coming out of her mouth, I saw the pictures, but they were not of the Microsoft family she had pasted into her presentation. The pictures I saw were of Joshua. Squatting in front of our home in Monterey sipping the water from a puddle on the sidewalk where it had collected when Anthony washed off the sidewalk after mowing the yard. I saw him peeking out of the dryer from the perfect hiding place when he decided to play hide-and-seek without telling me and I ... read more

The countdown begins! We have about 10 weeks left to go, before returning to Tanzania as full time missionaries! We are getting more and more excited each day! The container full of our household belongings will leave August 18th and hopefully not sit in port too long before departure for the North-Eastern African coast! It can take anywhere from 3-6 months for it to get cleared on that end you just never know! We wont be leaving until mid-September but will end up living from suitcases on this end for a month and on that end for several months. I've been reading blog entries with a smile from ear to ear from my dear friend Shasta for the past month now and decided what a great idea it was to keep everyone informed on a regular ... read more

I thought since we were going to be talking and letting you in on our lives that it would be nice to introduce our family. A lot of you know Anthony and I - maybe even Joshua, but as for the rest of the family you may not know them. We'll start with the parents. Anthony and I are very fortunate to have parents who even though they stressed out about us leaving and moving to Africa and taking their grandson - have been very supportive and wonderful about our decision. Anthony's parents, Walter and Jean Brown moved from living in the city in Nashville to living in the country in Hickman County Tennessee. Farm life was second nature to Anthony's dad, who along with his sister Nola, was featured in a farming magazine when they ... read more

How do you pack for 10 years? Anyone? The container carrying everything we own except for what is in 4 suitcases, leaves port here in the US and heads across the ocean to somewhere near lower Europe, then docks; either unloads and reloads to another ship, or the boat just refuels to continue the jouney to Africa. It will take approximately 6 weeks to physically get there. Then it must go through the customs and clearing agents hands before it can leave the docks and head to our new home. This could take weeks. The most recent container left America in the middle of Jan and did not arrive to it’s final destination until the END OF MAY!!!!! 4 and 1/2 months!!!!!! So - having said that, I must pack my 4, 50 pound suitcases wisely, ... read more

Let's see …. What else can I tell you to get you up to speed. Joshua graduated High School in May of this year. As you can see, even if I do say so, he's a good looking guy! Takes after his mother.  He was 4 when we moved to Tanzania the first time. He was then, and is now, such a good sport about everything. I have 3 sisters, so my poor Dad lived in a house with 5 women for the better part of his early life. When we found out that his first grandchild was to be a boy …. Man oh Man! Then his 2nd and his 3rd were boys, then 2 girls …. As you can see from the pictures there is a lot of years difference between Joshua and ... read more
