Background: In 788, about a century after the Arab conquest of North Africa, successive Moorish dynasties began to rule in Morocco. In the 16th century, the Sa'adi monarchy, particularly under Ahmad AL-MANSUR (1578-1603), repelled foreign invaders and inaugurated a golden age. In 1860, Spain occupied northern Morocco and ushered in a half century of trade rivalry among European powers that saw Morocco's sovereignty steadily eroded; in 1912, the French imposed a protectorate over the country. A protracted independence struggle with France ended successfully in 1956. The internationalized city of Tangier and most Spanish possessions were turned over to the new country that same year. Morocco virtually annexed Western Sahara during the late 1970s, but final resolution on the status of the territory remains unresolved. Gradual political reforms in the 1990s resulted in the establishment of a bicameral legislature in 1997. Parliamentary elections were held for the second time in September 2002 and municipal elections were held in September 2003.

I arrived in the Agdal neighborhood around 4pm (Moroccan time). Agdal is a wealthy part of Rabat btw. Inside of amideast's HQ I met up with Michael. He has been here for a month and really knows his way around and his Arabic is really good - I am impressed. I am living with the host family he had. They came and picked me up and the mom - Fatima, tried to carry my backpack. It was really funny because it was heavy and she was really struggling but wouldnt let me carry it. We got a cab and I was [View Full Entry]

Here are some pictures of my fun in Meknes. Went with Nihad and stayed with her fam, they are really sweet but I have to eat 4 times a day- big breakfast with croissants and tea and coffee, her mom made a big couscous while we were there b/c it was Friday, and she made harira especially for me because she knows I love it! Also we have afternoon tea with more cookies and cakes, then dinner around 9 or 10. It's kind of exhausting. [View Full Entry]

More of the Long Trip Africa » Morocco
More pictures from the long trip. Still waiting on the camel shots. Also, here is a poem I wrote while we were broken down on the side of the road.

Last Friday we left for a marathon trip around the South of the country. Many hours in the bus brought us to beautiful hotels, vibrant cities and the most diverse yet stunning natural beauty I have ever seen. I appear to be allergic to charging camera batteries because after replacing a lost battery charger before departing I have now lost my camera battery. Thus this post is missing pictures from our last and possibly most beautiful stay, a very nice resort on the hem of the Sahara's flowing robe of sand. If Roger can get his pictures uploaded then I can [View Full Entry]

Continuing the adventure, heading south for the Gorges of Ziz North Africa is a place you think of warmth, not on this morning...it was freezing as we drove south out of Fes towards the Middle Atlas and the town of Midelt heading for the gorges of Ziz. We were on the road well before 6, with the light slowly fighting it's way up into the clear blue sky, seemingly struggling with the cold morning. We had an excellent early run, out through Sefrou, with folk making their way to early prayer, wrapped against the chill of the morning. On out down [View Full Entry]

Since being in Paris, I have met some incredible people. On our 10 day trip to Morocco, Dani and I had the opportunity to travel with our two Moroccan friends, Tarik and Hassane to their home country. Our itenerary had us covering Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech, and Essouria. We had a late night flight out on Friday May 1st on "Jet4You" :) The first two nights of the trip were spent at Tarik’s home in Casablanca. His family was amazing and hospitable, we felt right at home from the moment we walked in the door. Tarik’s mother cooked for us continually, delicious [View Full Entry]

3rd largest Mosque in the World

Arrived in Marrakech at dusk, just in time to see the Djemma el-Fna (the large square in the middle of the market area) transform into an explosion of sensoral stimulation- dozens of food stands selling cous cous and tajines; spice stands; mint tea; snake charmers; monkeys; dancers; drummers; henna painters; acrobatics-- completely and utterly fascinating and overwhelming! We then spent the next hour finding our riad amongst the maize of small alleys that make up the medina where getting lost multiple times is to be expected. However.... when we did find it, it was completely worth the eff [View Full Entry]

The week has been pretty routine so far so I thought I would catch people up on what that means over hear. I am having a blast. It is constantly learning experience to be living in an Islamic country and getting used to the mix of semi-religious overtones, culture gaps, and language barriers. We are living with families and I was very lucky to get paired with Roger Connaroe. He is my year at UVa, Phi Delt, and his outlook on life makes him a great roommate. He's constantly exploring in our trips around Rabat. All in all there are like [View Full Entry]
