Background: In 788, about a century after the Arab conquest of North Africa, successive Moorish dynasties began to rule in Morocco. In the 16th century, the Sa'adi monarchy, particularly under Ahmad AL-MANSUR (1578-1603), repelled foreign invaders and inaugurated a golden age. In 1860, Spain occupied northern Morocco and ushered in a half century of trade rivalry among European powers that saw Morocco's sovereignty steadily eroded; in 1912, the French imposed a protectorate over the country. A protracted independence struggle with France ended successfully in 1956. The internationalized city of Tangier and most Spanish possessions were turned over to the new country that same year. Morocco virtually annexed Western Sahara during the late 1970s, but final resolution on the status of the territory remains unresolved. Gradual political reforms in the 1990s resulted in the establishment of a bicameral legislature in 1997. Parliamentary elections were held for the second time in September 2002 and municipal elections were held in September 2003.

Since being in Paris, I have met some incredible people. On our 10 day trip to Morocco, Dani and I had the opportunity to travel with our two Moroccan friends, Tarik and Hassane to their home country. Our itenerary had us covering Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech, and Essouria. We had a late night flight out on Friday May 1st on "Jet4You" :) The first two nights of the trip were spent at Tarik’s home in Casablanca. His family was amazing and hospitable, we felt right at home from the moment we walked in the door. Tarik’s mother cooked for us continually, delicious [View Full Entry]

Arrived in Marrakech at dusk, just in time to see the Djemma el-Fna (the large square in the middle of the market area) transform into an explosion of sensoral stimulation- dozens of food stands selling cous cous and tajines; spice stands; mint tea; snake charmers; monkeys; dancers; drummers; henna painters; acrobatics-- completely and utterly fascinating and overwhelming! We then spent the next hour finding our riad amongst the maize of small alleys that make up the medina where getting lost multiple times is to be expected. However.... when we did find it, it was completely worth the eff [View Full Entry]

The week has been pretty routine so far so I thought I would catch people up on what that means over hear. I am having a blast. It is constantly learning experience to be living in an Islamic country and getting used to the mix of semi-religious overtones, culture gaps, and language barriers. We are living with families and I was very lucky to get paired with Roger Connaroe. He is my year at UVa, Phi Delt, and his outlook on life makes him a great roommate. He's constantly exploring in our trips around Rabat. All in all there are like [View Full Entry]

After class today, Roger and I took a walk to the beach to meet some friends. We took the scenic route and I practiced my photography skills. Enjoy the pictures! Tomorrow, we go to Casablanca. On another note, I committed to the Commerce school today! I am concentrating in marketing. It was definitely a tough decisions (talk about two paths diverged!) but I am very excited for the next two years. It is definitely going to be a tough curriculum but I am really looking forward to the smaller school experience. [View Full Entry]

Disclaimer: The following content is solely my opinion and is not intended to represent the view of the Peace Corps. Once things settle down a bit I would like to do a day in the life blog, but since it is starting to get real, a lot has happened. I graduated so to speak and moved to my final work site. The feelings associated with this move have come and gone and have been replaced with the adjustment of leaving behind the English language. My site is gorgeous. I haven’t quite wrapped my head around it yet, no matter how much [View Full Entry]

Just one word to describe what we saw and experience during 3 days and 2 nights: IMPRESSIVE. I did not have any preconceived idea of what the desert would be like, but I never thought the landscape would amaze me so much. I did not consider myself a desert-lover person before, but this trip totally changed my mind! We went into a tour with 10 more people- total strangers which after a few hours in the mini.bus and the shared ccouscous during the stops become fellow travellers. Real nice and varied group- there were actually people from the 5 continents! [View Full Entry]

I actually took this picture because I love the shade of Morocco's royal green. And besides, where what would a photo album be without one inspired close up.
Here are pictures from the first field trip we took. They are from Tuesday, May 26. Everything was impressive and interesting but I kept finding myself thinking of the learning process involved in a field trip. Middle school graduation marks the end of the field trip's golden years and I don't think I think this might have been my first field trip since high school. For the most part the pictures do the trip justice. Minus the explanation of what you are looking at, an album of pictures is roughly the same thing. So what is the vale of a field [View Full Entry]

It hasn’t even been 10 hours since we arrived back in Bamako, but I’m so eager to commit my memory of our Morocco trip to writing that even having recovered little from our red-eye flight I will attempt to do so now. Nora and I had left Bamako last Monday at 3:30 am, arriving in Casablanca at 7. With 6 hours to kill before the arrival of Nora’s sister, Sarah, and her boyfriend, we hopped a train into the center of town with the intention of eating breakfast and heading to the Grand Mosque. We were a bit disoriented, and so [View Full Entry]

It's a good thing I am getting to this now because I am already forgetting things that happen each day. Monday was my first full day, which now strangely seems routine. Roger and I woke up around 7:45, got ready and had a very French breakfast of baguette, jelly, and cafe au lait. Ahmine then drove us to Amideast because there was no way we were going to make the 20 minute walk and be there on time. The first day of classes was great. I have three classes in the morning, from 9:00-1:15. My first class is a Moroccan literature [View Full Entry]
