TOUR 1 – Morocco Encompassed– 15 Days; Nomadic Tours; SAT, 7 MAY 2022 – SAT, 21 MAY 2022 My first accompanied, group tour is a 15-day trek that begins and ends in Marrakech, Morocco. This is the only tour that is the same tour as I had planned in 2020, with the exception that I had planned to pick up the full tour on Day 2 in Casablanca, Morocco. After the folks from Nomadic Tours had cancelled the tour and then learned of my isolated plight, they remained in contact with me to assure my welfare up until the time I reached London, England. Even though my tour money had been promptly refunded (vs. a ”voucher for future travel”), this “above and beyond” concern for my welfare during my crisis generated a sense of loyalty to ... read more

So, as Europe began to reopen again, we decided to head to Spain, with thoughts of doing a portion of the Frances camino, the one across Northern Spain. But somehow I stumbled on a discounted package to Morocco with Intrepid travel. Not usually our style, but it looked like a great way to see a new country. Intrepid prides itself on small group travel, and local interactions. So, we signed up and Patti and Doug decided to join us. It was a great tour!! There were only 6 other people on our tour, and most of them had done other Intrepid tours. 3 women from the UK, Anita from Australia who had been traveling since Dec, Angie from Columbia, and Iris from Toronto. We were fortunate to have a great Intrepid tour guide.. Mohammed was excellent. ... read more

Pull up a chair, there's something that might be of interest to anyone who has ever had anything remotely resembling widescreen ambition in the realm of overseas travel. After the dust was more or less beginning to settle in a world blighted by some unwanted episode(s) in the background, the light was sufficiently green to be able to set the most ambitious plan of action in the realm of travel in motion. Months of planning had it all at the ready, a multi-nation trek which would last anything up to one year, and include anything up to 30 nations, so the journey started life at a significant point on the globe, the Moroccan city of Tangier, the gateway to either Europe or Africa depending on which direction you are travelling from. Tangier is about commerce and ... read more

I was really looking forward to cycling through the Atlas Mountains and I wasn't disappointed. The road to Taraoudant was flat. I was cycling parrallel to the mountain range. Sunlight reflecting of snow capped peaks. After Taraoudant with the road signs counting down the distance to Marrakech I really felt like I was on the last leg of this trip. Then came the last left turn and I turned to face the mountains. The climb started of quite gently and I made decent progress. It was only after the village where I stopped for coffee that the gradients really got steeper and I got more tired. There was no accommodation in the village so I pressed on. The shop keeper did offer me accommodation in the living quarters behind the shop, but it seemed I'd be ... read more

On my way along the quiet promenade at Agadir I got my first good look at the local magpies. It was only then that I realised they were different to the ones at home in Ireland. They had bright blue markings around their eyes and less white. I stayed for a few days at a lovely house in the village of Takad just south of Agadir. I was hoping to see a bald ibis at some point as I explored the Souss Massa National Park. No luck, but it was lovely to get a couple of days cycling without a full set of panniers. On the first day I headed south on the N1. It was a pretty busy road, not for the faint hearted. There was a thin sliver of hard shoulder that I tried ... read more

A couple of days cycling took me from Oualidia to Essaouira, a larger seaside town with a bustling fishing port. I stayed in the hostel for a couple of nights just off the seafront. I spent a lovely morning exploring the port and the old town. The fishing port was busy with fishermen gutting fish, chatting, smoking, drinking coffee and watching the few tourists that were wandering around. Some French tourists appeared to be on a painting trip and sat around in several little groups behind their easals. As you'd expect with so much fish around there were dozens of cats and hundreds of gulls. Some of the gulls manned the old fortifications around the harbour and kept a watchful eye below. I wandered through the medina letting myself get lost and re-emerging at the far ... read more

The first day of cycling to Oualidia was in lovely sunshine as I had hoped for. There were loads of larks along the roadside. However on the second day the weather took a turn for the worse. In early afternoon a thunderstorm rolled in off the sea. I watched it coming towards me and wondered what the curious orange haze was below the slate grey cloud. I soon found out. As the sun disappeared and wind went from calm to almost storm force in seconds I was sand blasted for a few seconds before being drenched. I could barely push the bike never mind ride it. I wanted to get to shelter in the town a kilometre or so ahead as I guessed being in an open landscape like this in a raging thunderstorm was not ... read more

I decided to start my career break with a cycle trip to Morocco. The aim was to get fit enough to try and cycle over the Atlas Mountains and see how many bird species I could see. I started building my bird list in Marrakech. It was nice to see alot of familiar species such as blackbird, collared dove and starling. It was more exciting to identify common bulbul and house bunting. Over the next three weeks I cycled out to the coast at Ouiladia. Headed south to Agadir and turned inland for a couple of days before heading back to Marrakech via the pass at Tizi 'n Test. On the way I met brilliant people and saw some amazing birdlife. I hope to add some of those stories to this blog over the next few ... read more
