Background: In 788, about a century after the Arab conquest of North Africa, successive Moorish dynasties began to rule in Morocco. In the 16th century, the Sa'adi monarchy, particularly under Ahmad AL-MANSUR (1578-1603), repelled foreign invaders and inaugurated a golden age. In 1860, Spain occupied northern Morocco and ushered in a half century of trade rivalry among European powers that saw Morocco's sovereignty steadily eroded; in 1912, the French imposed a protectorate over the country. A protracted independence struggle with France ended successfully in 1956. The internationalized city of Tangier and most Spanish possessions were turned over to the new country that same year. Morocco virtually annexed Western Sahara during the late 1970s, but final resolution on the status of the territory remains unresolved. Gradual political reforms in the 1990s resulted in the establishment of a bicameral legislature in 1997. Parliamentary elections were held for the second time in September 2002 and municipal elections were held in September 2003.

some of my best friends ... right off the ferry in AFRICA!
I'm sorry I haven't been able to update lately! I've been busily roaming the streets of Sevilla whenever I'm not studying for my public health class (extremely hard but worth it because I'm getting nursing credit!) This past weekend, me and fifteen other students from my program traveled to Morocco! It was an incredible experience. I’m glad that I went. I never want to go back. We left Friday afternoon from Sevilla, and drove about 3 hours south to the straight of Gibraltar. From there we took the “fast ferry” about half an hour to Africa. Once we were on the [View Full Entry]

In our week long break between retreats, we took a ferry over to Morocco (North Africa). Arriving in Tanger, we had a few hours to spare before our overnight train departed for Marrakech. Our first impressions of Morocco was that was an intense place. In the cities things are non-stop. Market stalls open early and trade late into the night. Everyone wants something from you and will stop at nothing to get your full attention. First, they test out up to six different languages until they figure out your nationality. We were very impressed with the number of languages that the [View Full Entry]

One of the great adventures of this trip with the group was getting to go on an excursion down to Morocco, Africa. We took our bus to the border of Spain, then a ferry to cross the Strait of Gibraltar into Africa. Then bus again to get through the border patrol. This was very interesting and seemed a bit chaotic. We all had to get off the bus and get checked to make sure we didn’t have Swine flu. No one did. ☺ There were cars being unloaded and checked out. People were all over the place going back and forth. On the ferry crossing the Straight of Gibraltar

This post picks up from where the last one left off. So Jess went to have tea with a Moroccan family and Sara and I decided to take a cab to her neighborhood so she could figure out exactly where it was. After riding from Agdal to Hassan and walking around for a bit we found her house. She went inside and I continued to explore the area on my own. I walked to the Hassan Tower and took some pictures, spoke Arabic to horse mounted guards, and just wandered around aimlessly. Me, Sara, and Jess (from now on will be [View Full Entry]

Yesterday was the first full day of classes. The morning class is Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and the afternoon class is Darijah (Moroccan colloquial). The MSA class is kind of intense and we get a lot of homework. The Darijah is fun b/c the teacher doesnt speak English and it is all oral with really no homework. After spending the afternoon doing MSA homework Sara's home stay family came and picked her up. Jess' host dad was going to come to get her but was busy. My family doesn't have cars so they expect me to be able to maneuver my [View Full Entry]

Well my first night here Michael took me to get some leather slippers to wear in the house. It was hard to find some that would fit me but once we found some we bartered the guy down to around $10 USD. The slippers are really nice, hand made. When we got home Rashid asked what I got and so I pulled em out and handed them to him. He thought they were cool and put them on. Yesterday I couldn't find them and asked Rashid where he put them. He got this sad puppy face and went and got them. [View Full Entry]

Such majesty, dwarfs the Land Rover as the early morning sun starting to touch the tops
A proper Off-road adventure between the Gorges Once warmth had returned and we had made tea and Jonathan had packed up his tent we headed out for what we figured would be a long day. We planned to head up past Tineghir and up the Todra gorge, before hopefully finding the bush track over the mountain pass that leads down to the Dades gorge. What a day it turned out to be..... Such splendour, the walls are vertical and I had to walk up the steepest part of the gorge, otherwise you simply don't experience the scale of it. We were [View Full Entry]

I arrived in the Agdal neighborhood around 4pm (Moroccan time). Agdal is a wealthy part of Rabat btw. Inside of amideast's HQ I met up with Michael. He has been here for a month and really knows his way around and his Arabic is really good - I am impressed. I am living with the host family he had. They came and picked me up and the mom - Fatima, tried to carry my backpack. It was really funny because it was heavy and she was really struggling but wouldnt let me carry it. We got a cab and I was [View Full Entry]
