Background: In 788, about a century after the Arab conquest of North Africa, successive Moorish dynasties began to rule in Morocco. In the 16th century, the Sa'adi monarchy, particularly under Ahmad AL-MANSUR (1578-1603), repelled foreign invaders and inaugurated a golden age. In 1860, Spain occupied northern Morocco and ushered in a half century of trade rivalry among European powers that saw Morocco's sovereignty steadily eroded; in 1912, the French imposed a protectorate over the country. A protracted independence struggle with France ended successfully in 1956. The internationalized city of Tangier and most Spanish possessions were turned over to the new country that same year. Morocco virtually annexed Western Sahara during the late 1970s, but final resolution on the status of the territory remains unresolved. Gradual political reforms in the 1990s resulted in the establishment of a bicameral legislature in 1997. Parliamentary elections were held for the second time in September 2002 and municipal elections were held in September 2003.

Rest Stop somewhere between Marrakech and Taroudannt
The Imam is having some technical difficulties for the 7:30 pm Call to Prayer. I'm sitting on my roof terrace watching the main square in this authentic Moroccan town. A long day --- last night I downloaded pictures, chatted with Al, and had snails in the central square of Marrakech. Woke up at 7:30 am, for breakfast soup (no spoon given this time) then off to the bus. Met what I thought was a couple from Switzerland named Jean-Claude and Noemi. It turns out she’s his 20 year old daughter. Eight hour bus/taxi ride to Taroudannt through the High Atlas Mountains. [View Full Entry]

Day Tour: Fez on a Friday Getting there and away: Take a petit taxi to the Medina. You don't speak French or Arabic well enough, nor do you know the area, so don't even bother trying to ask for a specific entrance--just let him drop you off wherever he feels like, and pretend that's what you wanted the whole time. Spend a half hour or so trying to find your way in through a back alley. Activities: BE SURE TO CHECK OUT THE TANNERIES. You will have at least 100 + people remind you of this during your day in the [View Full Entry]

Casablanca. The word conjures up images of Humphrey Bogart and romance. But that's not exactly what you'll find here. Instead, Casablanca is Morocco's largest city and its commercial and industrial hub. It's also home to the awe-inspiring Hassan II mosque. This is, to date, the most impressive religious structure we have seen (even surpassing the Vatican). But we're not there yet -- in fact, the story hasn't even begun! After arriving from Paris, we quickly (and easily) caught the train from the Casablanca airport to downtown (35DH/$4.38 per person) and pushed ourselves past the [View Full Entry]

Very different than the old city...
Started the day at 7:30 am with Scottish John. Went for breakfast soup “B____”, then checked out a palace. Went to visit John’s friend Abdullah. They recounted tales of yesteryear when they were both booze-hounds. Apparently John did a lot of opium and heroine in the past. Abdullah invited us both to dinner at 3 pm. Spent the rest of the afternoon in Souks, bought nothing. John is an avid bird watcher. Dinner - Awesomely authentic!!! His wife cooks chicken courtyard hibachi and sets everything up, but eats with her sister in the kitchen. Abdullah, John and I eat in the [View Full Entry]

From Wednesday I hang out in Morocco. It's way different than Spain but what surprised me most is that the countrysides very much remind me of those from Poland. It's about 300 km from the desert, however I want to stay faithful to my plan and go back to explore Spain... Africa is definitely something else and I'll definitely have to return here maybe a little more prepared. Right now I sit in the internet coffee in Bhalil (light of the night:) with my friend Hassan, who lives in a cave :) a really cool accent. Tonight I will transport myself [View Full Entry]

No sleep last night, only during the flight. Arrived in the mid-morning after a good flight (must endeavour to meet Ryan Air stewardesses in London!). Met a Scotsman named John. He knows Morocco. I Found a decent hotel for cheap (Hotel Imouzzer). Breakfasted on the main square and then slept until 3:30pm. I must go buy flip-flops and have my first shower in four days!!! I’m also looking forward to my first sleep in a real bed since I left Ottawa on May 9th... Later - Spent the evening wandering around Marrakesh with “Scottish John”. Interesting fellow, he’s 48 and a [View Full Entry]

Signs of culture shock may include: dizziness, claustrophobia, displacement, and a slightly glazed over appearance as you realize there ARE no streetsigns. I write again from Marrakesh in something called the "cyber park" where I am mostly surrounded by other tourists with equally bad french and dressed eerily like myself. I figure I'd take the opportunity to write an entry as internet here is not always reliable, judging from the dank upstairs hole with one working computer we used yesterday in Tangier. We set foot on African soil yesterday after taking the ferry from Tarifa, Spain t [View Full Entry]

Following on from a fantastic wedding (we have to say that as it was our own) Sally and I embarked on our shortest longish-haul trip ever - only 6 days in Morocco! Normally we'd have just bought our return flights and worked things out on arrival but as it was our honeymoon we decided to pre book and make the most of the short time we had away. Sally found the most amazing Riad - I would have been happy with a dorm bed in a hostel but had to concede to a proper honeymoon with private rooms and an en [View Full Entry]

We need objects to remind us of the commitments we've made. That carpet from Morocco reminds us of the impulsive, freedom-loving side of ourselves we're in danger of losing touch with. Beautiful furniture gives us something to live up to. All designed objects are propaganda for a way of life.” Alain de Botton We arrived in Marrakesh in the late afternoon, we have 2 nights here with the tour. and 4 more with no reservations. After a fiasco at the tour hotel we finally taxied to another for one night only .. or so we thought. After a quick check in [View Full Entry]

Thoughts on 28N 12W: The Degree Confluence Project and Why We Travel On the Road to… Something It is easy to follow the beaten path. It leads to a place that is comfortable and known. There are not many surprises, and leisure and rest are almost guaranteed; it comes for the most part, expected. For the average American, the idea of ‘travel’ might mean vacationing at luxurious resorts close to the equator, where their biggest worry consists of which fruity drink to have poolside. But what is off the beaten path anymore? Is there a place that is uniq [View Full Entry]
