Jedenfalls bin ich ganz erstaunt, was icvh alles mitgeschleppt habe.. Es sind wieder zwei ... read more

Term 3, 11 weeks, it flew past in such a blur. I am finding it hard to remember what actually happened. The academic year for the kids and I is over. School is out till early September. Charlotte grew in confidence, we had some struggles this year, but she really came into her own this past term. Her teacher worked really hard to bring her confidence back up after it took a hit in the first term. Charlotte starred in a solo dance for her class assembly. She has loved her extracurricular activities this term, ballet, soft toy club, knitting and first aid club. Charlotte farewells 3 special friends this July, she is being really good about it, but it is a lot. Hayley has really enjoyed being in Year 1, so much so she doesn't ... read more

On the other side of this bridge, on the other side of the world in Kenya, Africa lies a whole community that lives very differently than most of us that have easy access to the internet on which to read this blog. The area on the other side of this bridge lies a slum. We wake up in the morning, flip on our lights and turn on our running water after climbing out of our cozy beds. They wake up in the morning and get out of the family bed in their 8 x 10 sheet metal “house”. We have the luxury of a shower or a bath, they send the mother or a child to go find water and fill a plastic basin where they can take a “bucket bath”. We have a bathroom, they ... read more

Alright.. Blog post the first. Tomorrow I'll try to write something about how all of this started.. But for now here's some ramblings about today brought to you by lack of sleep: I touched down in Nairobi about halfway through the most recent Hunger Games flick. It was surprisingly good and I was actually a little bummed I wasn’t able to finish it. Nevertheless I stepped off the plane with wide-eyed excitement. This didn’t last long however as when I reached the front of the line at customs I was informed that I would need to purchase a visa even though I would only be spending the night in a nearby hotel before departing for Tanzania in the morning. At this point the agent simply says “give me $50.” To which I replied “Isn’t there some ... read more

The weather has been amazing here in Nairobi. We have been swimming alot and enjoying being outside. The kids all had their swim galas at school. Murray and Charlotte competed in the Mt Kenya 10 to 4 Race. Murray did the Classic, which is 70km, starting from 10,000feet on the slops of Mt Kenya, down to 4,000feet finishing in Borana conservancy. Murray spent the 3 weeks before in Geneva cycling in the snow in preparation, so he was a little rusty, but seemed to enjoy his race. He saw a leopard along the way, pretty cool/terrifying at the same time. Charlotte raced the next day a 9km Mountain biking race, her first experience of mountain biking. We were thrilled she finished and with a huge smile on her face. Hayley and Emma were inspired by all ... read more

Immanuel- God with us. The most perfect gift. I just returned from Kenya, Africa along with my Little and my mom. It was a wonderful trip where we got to take presents to the children and young adults that are sponsored through ITHM and to deliver medical and school supplies to our partners. The gifts were greatly appreciated, as for some, it is the only presents they will receive this year. The girls were thrilled and kept looking in their new backpacks at their gifts of clothing and accessories and their smiles were wide. However, the greatest gift to them was our presence. As for every child, their lives are impacted by the adults around them. If you give a child a material gift but do not give them love they will be lacking and wanting…longing ... read more

After a long haul starting with overnight stay in Bribane, 7am flight to Sydney, rush through to iternational terminal to catch our 14 hour flight to Johannesburg, 3hours in J/burg airport and then 4hr flight to Nairobi, we finally arrived 26 hours later in the capital of Kenya at 1.30am. The hotel picked us up from the airport and we finally got to bed around 3am. Ian was up at 6 and I slept til 8. We walked into the city and found ourselves the target of many men trying to coax us to their market stores and story tellers acting like they were interested in where we were from but were really beggars. the city markets were really interesting with butchers, florists, fruit, art, jewelery and carving stalls. I controlled myself from buy anthing as ... read more

... read more

Nairobi is a tough city to enjoy. Apparently I didn't take a single photo while there. The traffic is horrendous and it's too dangerous to walk around at night. Just ask the Slovenian guy I met there, who tried it and was attacked almost immediately. But it's easy to take a taxi into a secure compound like a mall or food market for the evening.... read more

Total distance travelled today: 19.1 km (by car) Elapsed time of travel: 2 hours, 16 minutes Lodging for the Night: Hotel Boulevard After a sleepless first overnight flight to Amsterdam (6 hours 15 min), 6 hours out in Amsterdam with our Dutch friends, Annelie and Sander, and another relatively sleepless overnight flight (8 hours...and 2 days later), we arrived exhausted in Nairobi at 6am. The lineup for the visas seemed to take forever, but there were no hassles and soon we were off to the hotel (we managed to pay less for a transit visa because we were going to be in Kenya for less than 24 hours). We were very happy that we had gotten a transfer to the hotel from gadventures, because we were just so tired and it was just so easy. The ... read more
