Visited the David Shedrick Elephant Orphanage where we were treated to seeing the antics of 26 elephants ranging in age from 6 months to 4 years. All of the elephants have been rescued and will be returned to the wild. Many of these 26 were retrieved after they had fallen down a well, some were left orphaned because poaches had killed their mother. The babies are absolutely adorable and were tourist friendly, approaching us and allowing us to pet them. They loved rolling in the rich red clay dirt and piling on top of each other, They were feed from huge baby bottles, a special formula similar to human baby formula, It was charming watching these infants and very encouraging to see that there are many who are striving to make a difference in the lives ... read more

Breakfast at 7, cereal, lady guide came at 7.45 to take us round a local village, she explained how the villagers were living in real poverty until a charity stepped in and showed them how to harvest, knit, sew & make jewellery, they also set up a school for the children. First thing was visiting the local children's nursery where they all came out and sang us a song. We were then welcomed to where they do their crafts by a group of ladies singing & dancing, of course we all joined in. Back at camp we had lunch and then walked down to the lake to board boats to see the rhinos, scenery was brilliant, the guide whistled, threw a fish in the water and we watched the sea eagles swoop down to eat ... read more

Early start this morning, truck packed up and away for 8, 4 hour drive to lake Nakuru where we'll be spending 1 night, quite a bumpy ride but was good to pass bamboos and zebras on the side of the road, stoped to look at view of the great Rift Valley.. Campsite ok, had lesson on how to pitch tent and were given our rota, my daily task was doing the cooking fortunate they must have had a tip off about my cooking because my help wasn't needed. After lunch we boarded the truck for our first game drive. We did see 2 of the big 5, rhinos & buffalo's, no lions but there's time yet, lots of zebra's, baboons, impala's, Thompsongazelle's ,jackal's & warthogs so not a bad day in all, was good to see ... read more

I have always loved Africa and everything about it- growing up glued to David Attenborough on the television has made me not just yearn for visiting Africa, but lust for it intensely. There is something about Africa, it has whatever the X factor is. It is a continent of having absolutely everything you could imagine, home to the cradle of mankind, the oldest of civilizations, the largest and most diverse collections of birds, mammals and plants, colossal sky scraping mountaing and deep gorges, intense heat and drought to snow covered mountains, rocky cliffs to white tropical beaches- it literally has everything anyone could ever want encompasses in one massive block of land sandwiched between the Atlantic and Indian ocean, and the Mediterranean sea. Africa is, without a doubt, my favourite place to visit, with ten individual ... read more

Did a quick last game drive before heading out to the Porini Lion camp, which is our last stop before heading back to Nairobi. As usual we awoke at 5;30 to get the most time we could out of the day, so it was a 2 hr. game drive which we asked to be added onto our itinerary because the wife was sick the second day of the third leg. We had to find the sunrise fast. It was coming up and a backdrop was necessary, so off we went searching.... We came upon a lonely tree, a fitting beginning to another spectacular day. Lots of Hyenas around this time of the morning searching for half eaton carcusses so that they can steal a leg or two. They love to eat limbs. Usually they follow the ... read more

Onto camp #3. Il Keliani. Not part of the Porini Camps. However, same principle. We arose at 5:30 AM for a 6 AM departure. The airfield was not far. As we drove along the road we passed a motercycle heavily laden with crates of supplies it seemed. A real balancing act that I am sure has been well rehearsed over time. I wonder how hi it could go before the balancing of the bike was affected. lol.No security. Check-in was easy. Just stay clear of the animals meandering about and stay close. Remember that we are the prey. As we drove towards the airport, the sun was rising and we were able to stop and take pictures of Mount Kenya again. It was clearer and added a peaceful moment to the beginning of the day. Game ... read more

The day started off unpredictable. We were supposed to have a picnic breakfast out in the wilderness. These breakfasts are always a smorgasbord of a dozen or more items that have been carefully prepared by the kitchen staff. Boo Hoo. The wife was sick or had a reaction to the malaria pills. It turned out she was not drinking enough water. I can understand the need for R &R but I did not come all this way to spend in a camp, but out side the camp. I liked being the prey. I decided to do a bird watching tour with a senior Maasai named Wilson, who jumped at the chance to go out with me. As knowledge goes, Wilson has an abundance of this. He was able to do bird calling, and point out to ... read more

Day 4: Chimps. White and Black Rhinos and Lions. Began with the sunrise of Mount Kenya. Perfectly positioned, we were treated to the sunrise slowly materializing until all of its glory. We took off from there and went to a watering station area and came across a pride of Lions . Our driver Benjamin followed along the plain as they loped off. The Lions were irritated,. One had blood on its face. They fed well over the last night. A picnic breakfast later in a beautiful scenic area by a river allowed me to capture amazing shots of the tamer wildlife , of birds in a tranquil setting..After eating away at all the food we were interrupted by a German tourist that said he had a permit to be where we are and that we should ... read more
